I think the reason so many people are confused is because he doesn't receive all singles back. If he does than it is a whole lot easier to understand. He comes in with a 20, gets 20 single dollar bills, and request a 10 dollar bill for 10 singles. He double counts the money and ends up giving the cashier 9 dollars instead of 10. The cashier gives him the 10 but then realizes he only has 9 dollars. Then the con adds 11 dollars and request a 20 in exchange to cover up the scam.

To be effective, think bigger. Repeat the con twice. Instead of giving out nine 1's, give them a 5 and four 1's and ask for a 10. Put everything on the table, and act demanding/in a rush. Once you short change the teller the first time, admit fault and ask to start over, with the original 20. Then ask for four 5's. Admit fault again and say you need 10's. This time one 5 and three 1's. Get the 10, then add one 9, 10, 15, 20. And ask for two 10's. Confusing? It is.. and it works. 25 to 45. :)
lol this was done to me when i was like 16 and i wouldnt give him the 20$. the guy made a big scene and my boss gave him the 20. twenty dollars was short in the register, so i think my boss got scammed too :P (though he blamed me)

By only giving him $9, it diverted the cashier's attention away from him pocketing the $10. Now instead of having $20, he has $30 due to the $10 that he pocketed.

I don't think this would ever work in real life because I have NEVER seen a cashier hand someone cash change BEFORE getting the bills to be exchanged. Never have I seen that. They always count the money you give them before handing you back any money.

Basically when he says give me back the $20 that's when the scam happens, the $10 on the table still belong to the cashier (after scammer paid 10x $1) but when scammer puts down another of his $10 ONTOP of that existing $10-(cashier's $10 still on the table + his $10 from his pocket) he confuses the cashier by claiming this sum of $20 as his own.
He says i already got enough 1 dollar bill Let me give u these 1 dollar bills back for 1 of 10 He gives it, The other person counts it and see that it's only 9 dollar he says he's sorry then he'll say we make it right then ill give u this other 1 dollar bill to make it 10 then i give u 10 more and i get my 20 back then we're even
The con man lies when he says he now has extra $1 bills that he needs to get rid of as he gives the cashier some $1 bills. The con man quickly hides the $10 bill he takes from the cashier. The cashier discovers that only nine $1 bills were paid. The con man adds a $1 bill and two $5 bills = $20. The con man has deceptively KEPT the $10 bill. The cashier has forgotten this fact. Final Score: Con artist has $10+$20=$30. Cashier has -$10.
Shortchanging can be stopped by counting exactly everything the con-artist gives you FIRST before you ever open the drawer. Then, they can't do the "mistake."
He gets the 10 back first (on the 9 "mistake"), then adds 1 and 5 and 5 and asks for a 20 (on top of the 10 that he already received). So he gets back 30 in total but only gave up 20.

Some dude tried this on me and I caught him. He bought a snickers and paid with a 50$...weird already. he wants change but demands I count it in front of him. If you work in retail, you have to look out for this, as some people will try it on. The other way is to adopt a zero change attitude. As if they are no buying anything of you, you will not give change to them. Another way is just to count what they give to you, before you give out any change and only to do it once, so they can not confuse you.

I don't think this would ever work in real life because I have NEVER seen a cashier hand someone cash change BEFORE getting the bills to be exchanged. Never have I seen that. They always count the money you give them before handing you back any money.
It would work IF they were stupid enough to hand you cash first, but that never happens.

Basically when he says give me back the $20 that's when the scam happens, the $10 on the table still belong to the cashier (after scammer paid 10x $1) but when scammer puts down another of his $10 ONTOP of that existing $10-(cashier's $10 still on the table + his $10 from his pocket) he confuses the cashier by claiming this sum of $20 as his own.

The con man lies when he says he now has extra $1 bills that he needs to get rid of as he gives the cashier some $1 bills. The con man quickly hides the $10 bill he takes from the cashier. Only works if the cashier gives you the ten BEFORE he counts your $9, which is unlikely. Most people will count what you gave them before giving you the denominations you requested..... Good trick though - Id guess it has about 40% success rate if done properly..

Then when he pretends not to want to get confused, he hands him back his own ones he got in the beginning to "call it even." he then gets the original $20, walking away with $30

The fact is that it only works when the shopkeeper gives a tenner for the 9-ers in exactly the same time. if a shopkeeper first counts the 9 and then wants to gives the tenner after he receives another one, it will not work, because then one transaction is already passed before the other one can start.

But then he adds 2 $5's to the 10 singles and asks for his $20 back. The cashier gives it to him w/o realizing he already gave him a 10 for the singles. Guy now has $30.

Some dude tried this on me and I caught him. He bought a snickers and paid with a 50$...weird already. he wants change but demands I count it in front of him. Mid way threw he says heres two twenties and a ten just give me a hundred. And im like WTF. For one thing his total was like 80cents so to make a even dollar id need 20 cents. ANd why would he get a free 50 bucks...lets just say he was an amateur. And looked to be a crack addict. He took his normal change and played the "oh, my bad" act.

If you work in retail, you have to look out for this, as some people will try it on. The other way is to adopt a zero change attitude. As if they are no buying anything of you, you will not give change to them. Another way is just to count what they give to you, before you give out any change and only to do it once, so they can not confuse you.
