Enigma, my ass. All drummers, particularly young ones, copy their idols. Not to mention ELP had to produce some filler tracks quick to fill out the first album before it's deadline. Oh yeah...and fuck the mind-numbly overrated Barker with a steel support beam covered in asbestos.
Seems this isn't really a "versus" thing; it's just a just an entertaining observation -- that Carl Palmer transcribed and learned some of Buddy Rich's licks, for the fun and challenge of it, like any drummer might do.
I hardly think Carl would see it as an attempt to "compete" with Buddy.
(Our arms are all too short to box with God...lol...)
@ikshields - There's nothing wrong with having influences as long as you admit to them, and there's nothing wrong with borrowing from them as long as you're not stealing and claiming it as your own.
Carl Palmer is a great drummer. Buddy Rich was doing those licks before Carl was even born. God gave both of them gifts. I believe Buddy was the best.
@giggie and 4aginst1 - LMFAO at your comments! You're right. I don't trash a fellow musician, especially a drummer, because I've worked hard for 55 years trying to be a good drummer myself. I do, however, can't think of a reason Travis Barker is even in one's brain path when mentioning Rich and Palmer. They are some of the best drummers who've ever lived. Barker fits the band and the music he plays, and let's leave it at that. If he ever went up against Carl Palmer, he'd get his clock cleaned.
Buddy Rich was an amazing drummer. I guarantee you he could play anything Travis Barker has ever done with one hand tied behind his back. If you don't like Buddy, check out Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Thomas Lang, Dennis Chambers, or my personal favorite, Danny Carey. All incredibly talented masters of the drums. Travis Barker can't hold a candle to any of those guys, but they could play Travis' drum parts with the greatest of ease, and make them sound better. Travis is a hack.
@4against1 Travis Barker is at best an AVERAGE drummer. He has no exceptional skills whatsoever when it comes to playing drums. There are tons of drummers you've never even heard of who would mop the floor with him. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Just because he is famous doesn't mean he's a great drummer. He does have good feel and does a good job of playing in the pocket, so he gets called to do some studio work; pop music doesn't require much skill to play.
@DinnenG I don't think Travis Barker would get so much hate if his fans didn't insist on being snide pieces of shit. It's pretty damn rediculous when you're looking at a legendary drum solo by one of the all time greats, and then his fucking name just has to be brought up by some little scene douche who wants to be hardcore. The guy himself is not so much the problem as is the ingrates who listen to him.
The one great comparison that can be made between a fantastic drummer like Buddy Rich and ANY other drummer you may think is great -- is to give that other drummer a much smaller set of drums. A standard set. So if they miss, they don't accidently hit something else they hung all around them. Why a great modern drummer needs 500 drums & cymbals surrounding him is beyond me. Rich never need it and he sounded like two machine guns firing at the same time.
I can never tell if all the Travis Barker loons who come out to comment on drummer videos are serious or if they are just trolling. This has been going on for years. He's a very okay drummer, seriously just okay. There are countless better drummers out there, never mind titans like Palmer and Rich. I have nothing against the guy, I just don't know why so many think he's so great.
Travis Barker ??? hahaha damn I no longer want to live if anyone would ever say that Barker is better than these great drummers. He's good don't get me wrong but....
Just tell me, does Barker use the Underhand grip/Traditional grip??? Don't worry I'll wait...
Travis Barker shouldn't be in the same sentence as Rich & Palmer? Oops! Anyhow, there's no comparison, a brain dead reality Tv star who's an okay drummer against two of the greats? Trust me, I've been drumming for years & whoever brought Travis Barker into this should fuck off & watch a video of some current gay stadium rock band.
Travis Barker doesnt suck. There's a jazz record out there with him on it. Find it and listen to it. However, even though Buddy Rich didn't have the 30-40 years of musical evolution thats taken place to develop his drumming, he'd still murder 99% of modern drummers while he plays on a 4 piece kit. And I dont think Barkerk is one of the few.
@ejlister Lol, only he isn't a douchebag. He's very humble, and doesn't boast about himself. Immature fucks that troll with his name are the ones who give him a bad connotation. He's a really good drummer, and if you deny that, then you are clearly uneducated.
@XxStrongDrums1996xX While I'm not a fan of Blink 182, I don't get the Barker-hate. I never recall the man claiming to be the next Tony Williams, nor have I heard him badmouth other musicians. To me, Barker sounds more technically and stylistically advanced than most drummers playing music similar to Blink 182's.
@AndyVintheD I agree entirely. Travis Barker is a very modest musician, and has never once claimed himself to be above another musician. I think that a lot drummer have a big fallacy on what the purpose of a drummer is, and that's why drummers like Travis are bashed. It's not our job to play the most technically advanced and creative grooves in every song; it's our job to properly compliment the music. Travis does just that.

I'm with spacemodulated on his comment although I don't agree with the term jack-off, that's not nice. But CP does have a nasty habit of speeding up. Listen to Karn Evil9 on Brain Salad Surgery album. Why they chose to go with that drum track on that recording is unforgiveable! Maybe after 50 takes, Carl just couldn't get it right and they threw in the towel.
@belairjeff0:11 - 0:22 is the audio from Tank by ELP but the video from Channel One by Buddy Rich. 0:23 - 0:32 is Channel One, then the audio of Tank is mixed in on top until 0:42. Then you've got a fill by Buddy which is alarmingly similar to Carl's in Tank... it's then repeated for clarity.
So yeah. The video is to highlight the similarities in Carl and Buddy's playing style... with the suggestion that Carl actually stole fills from Buddy.
Buddy Rich, and Carl Palmer, were good friends, Buddy gave the young Carl pointers on the snare drum, And Carl sat in with Buddy's band and recorded a tune with them, I saw a clip of Carl saying he dated Buddy's daughter, Hope she did'nt look like Buddy.
SO, I'm not the first one who heard parallels between "Channel One" and "Tank", huh? I heard from a firend the CP actually dated or was engaged to Cathy Rich at some point, but never read anything to confirm that. Here's my take.. Buddy was musically iliterate, so he never charted his drum parts (although Gene Krupa transcribed quite a few of them)...so, maybe CP heard something he liked and used it...so what? Happens all the time. I'm impressed by the fact that he could physically DO it!
if you pay attention closely, thats when you repeat the vid with buddy r. you can tell
that its not the same. thanks to buddy's school, carl learn and became the best prog drummer ever. He learned classical too. he played the percussions on works that includes the piano concerto no.1 by keith emerson. So this doesnt say anytthing it only shows his influences. listen to toccata and you can tell that elp ey were also in the top with technology.
Hey, I've noticed that The Stone Roses' "I Am the Resurrection" and Green Day's "Know Your Enemy" start out with the same drum beat. Does that mean they stole it? Who knows.
The Buddy chart is called 'Channel One Suite'. Written for him by Vegas show arranger Bill Reddie around 1966. It is available on a number of recordings both commercial and bootleg as well as in various videos you can find on YouTube.
I don't get the controversy in the comments. This is Tank from ELP's first album. CP later redid it in a big band chart for Works vol 1. This arrangement that Buddy's doing appears to be yet another one. As best I can recall I think the Works chart is much better. Buddy should have done that one. But again, Why the controversy. Buddy Rich inspired scores of drummers, Carl included, so the title doesn't make sense. Carl's best work was Pictures at an Exhibition BTW, IMO.
Buddy Rich was a master as is Carl Palmer. One thing to point out, The equipment Rich used wasn't nearly as advanced as they are now. The sound set ups etc. In my opinion, that really enhances the legacy of Buddy Rich's work. Carl Palmer takes it to another level in his own right as well. The only way to compare these two is to find something they both have in common.........GREATNESS!
@ anonymusum.....u r incorrect about Basie's piano skills as many folk r! ...go listen to his works of the early Count Basie Orch era, the Blue Devils, & the Bennie Moten Orch.....he was a more than powerful presence at the rent parties &/or cutting contests as well!....go do the homework!!!
Say Buddy Live in Montreal...what a show...he was sublime...every stoke a note of music...Carl is a different drummer...but the inspiration is there...
Sorry Carl..... you're a very good drummer, but no Buddy Rich (who is). Do yourselves a favor and go watch this actual solo here on youtube. It's called "Buddy Rich drum solo at the Hague, 1978..... and it's mind blowing!!
Sorry, I did not mean to offend you. I truely believe that in music it´s all about expression, technique is just the tool to get it. Look at Count Basie. Certainly not a brilliant piano player in terms of technical skills but he was a master of swing. So here we are: would it be reasonable to judge or compare him with - let´s say Oscar Peterson? - Carl Palmer would have been the wrong drummer for the BR Big Band as well as Buddy Rich for ELP.
buddy came firs afcourse but palmer was amazing, still is,great piece of footige from buddy
but the best steal, emerson was also influenced by the great players(gynastera, larry young...)i learned about jazz through ELP,you couldn't give them a better compliment
Reminds me of an interview with Carl, he said he was driving with Buddy and he slapped in a tape of "Welcome Back My Freinds..." After a while Carl says "so what do you think?" Buddy pauses and then says "what you don't steal, you play very well!"
Very clever! Palmer definately stole some of Buddy's licks for his 'Tank' solo. I have a Buddy recording from the 50's that has that same section with the pounding bass drum going into the snare rolls. And I'm sure Buddy was influenced by Carl as well since they were friends. Two great drummers. Thanks for posting! 5 stars.
Palmer and Rich are my favorite drummers and both have spectacular and unrivaled technique. I have no beef with either guy, and if one plays licks similar to other, who cares? What a treat it was to see Palmer in concert and in clinic. I could care less about playin in the pocket for either of them. Let others keep time, these two are born to blaze.
does anyone honestly believe that Buddy ripped off ANYTHING from Carl Palmer? As good as Palmer is from a technical standpoint, his solos consist of licks ripped off from a myriad of jazz drummers, from Buddy, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, etc etc. As someone else pointed out, he can't groove at all. When he plays straight, simple beats, his time is all over the map (listen to the studio recording of Lucky Man for evidence of this)
I love Carl Palmers drumming on things like Tarkus and Karn Evil 9... he's really entertaining to listen to and technically proficient.
Drumuitar, you correctly point out (and I say this a big fan of Carl), he is absolutely TERRIBLE in the pocket. I had a drum teacher like this once: The guy could play a million polyrhythms, lightning fast rudiments, etc., but if he played a simple beat, it just sounded choppy and awful. Funny how that can happen.
Good job on this one man!!! I've always heard the simularities of Carl and Buddy Rich, but you have done a fine job pin pointing an example with this song.
Great job on splicing this video. I'd be interested to know what year that Buddy Rich song came out, because it really does sound a hell of a lot like Tank!
Who cares which one is faster? I'd prefer Bill Bruford or Joe Morello over these two any day! If Carl would have concentrated on being more musical rather than a noise bag he'd be in better shape today.
I'm sure you're getting flamed over your comment Vlad, but even as a huge fan of Carl, I agree partially. Carl was horrible at groove playing - I've never heard him do a really great groove even in recent years. But in his own element, he was fantastic (Tarkus, Tank, etc.).
Bruford and Morello both have delicate touches and deep pockets. I love each of them, despite the fact that much of it is over my head as a drummer. All have been inspirations to me in different ways. :-)
oh by the way all of you commentators, can anyone help?
Ive a track by Duke Ellington called 'gonna tan youre hide'.. If you have heard this track then youll know how crazy the drum solo is! I want to know who the drummer is and what album it originally came off! Youre help will be life changing! cheers
a clever montage/mix of percussion.. im not going to say who the best drummer is im more up on my prog rock/jazz fusion and not my jazz but i equally enjoyed the drumming whatever genre of music.. cheers for the post gumby10
Pretty interesting comparison ... elp's Tank IS credited to "Emerson, Palmer"

where's Carl Palmer in all this? i mean, the vid is "Palmer versus Rich". where's Palmer???? why didn't i see Palmer?
belairjeff 1 year ago
@belairjeff You were hearing him.
BlackSabbath86 11 months ago
@BlackSabbath86 ahhhh..so i was SEEING Buddy but hearing Carl.
belairjeff 11 months ago
@belairjeff 0:11 - 0:22 is the audio from Tank by ELP but the video from Channel One by Buddy Rich.
BlackSabbath86 11 months ago
@BlackSabbath86 gotcha. nice work. hard work! for you...thanks.

Buddy Rich, and Carl Palmer, were good friends, Buddy gave the young Carl pointers on the snare drum, And Carl sat in with Buddy's band and recorded a tune with them, I saw a clip of Carl saying he dated Buddy's daughter, Hope she did'nt look like Buddy.

enigma......
theocats2 1 year ago
SO, I'm not the first one who heard parallels between "Channel One" and "Tank", huh? I heard from a firend the CP actually dated or was engaged to Cathy Rich at some point, but never read anything to confirm that. Here's my take.. Buddy was musically iliterate, so he never charted his drum parts (although Gene Krupa transcribed quite a few of them)...so, maybe CP heard something he liked and used it...so what? Happens all the time. I'm impressed by the fact that he could physically DO it!
bufumofo223 1 year ago
Nice editing! Nothing to do with drumming - Carl was and is Carl - Buddy was and is Buddy!!
billyconnearly 1 year ago
if you pay attention closely, thats when you repeat the vid with buddy r. you can tell
that its not the same. thanks to buddy's school, carl learn and became the best prog drummer ever. He learned classical too. he played the percussions on works that includes the piano concerto no.1 by keith emerson. So this doesnt say anytthing it only shows his influences. listen to toccata and you can tell that elp ey were also in the top with technology.

Carl Palmer was sometimes referred to as 'the new Buddy Rich.'
Asymmatrix 1 year ago
Buddy Rich was a master as is Carl Palmer. One thing to point out, The equipment Rich used wasn't nearly as advanced as they are now. The sound set ups etc. In my opinion, that really enhances the legacy of Buddy Rich's work. Carl Palmer takes it to another level in his own right as well. The only way to compare these two is to find something they both have in common.........GREATNESS!

Hey, if you're going to steal, steal from the best, eh? And frankly, you have to be pretty damn good to steal from Buddy Rich to begin with.

I always thought there was some Béla Bartok in ELP's tunes... tank especially.
rhivideo 1 year ago
@rhivideo no El Barbaro off "ELP" album was Bela Bartok. Tank was written by Keith. Usually he states the source if its not original
. Carl's drumming was pure Buddy, as you can see. !

@justentime77
Why should Carl do this? Let him be just himself, as a drummer and an artist. Why do you folks always come up with this versus crap?
anonymusum 1 year ago 2
@anonymusum I didn't come up with it and believe me, there's no comparison. I know, I know it's all subjective right?
justentime77 1 year ago
@justentime77
- Carl Palmer would have been the wrong drummer for the BR Big Band as well as Buddy Rich for ELP.
anonymusum 1 year ago
@anonymusum None taken and all good points. Like comparing Picaso to Dali.

Reminds me of an interview with Carl, he said he was driving with Buddy and he slapped in a tape of "Welcome Back My Freinds..." After a while Carl says "so what do you think?" Buddy pauses and then says "what you don't steal, you play very well!"

Buddy Rich was hot in the 1950's - 1960's.
By the time Carl ((ELP) 1970's/1980's) Palmer came out Buddy had retired. Tank had to be a bite off of a 20Yr old record.
Sirrom0206 2 years ago
Very clever! Palmer definately stole some of Buddy's licks for his 'Tank' solo. I have a Buddy recording from the 50's that has that same section with the pounding bass drum going into the snare rolls. And I'm sure Buddy was influenced by Carl as well since they were friends. Two great drummers. Thanks for posting! 5 stars.

not a big deal, one part of a song from each that sound similar. they're common riffs for great "jazzy" (which i consider palmer) drummers.
potatopizza93 2 years ago
Palmer and Rich are my favorite drummers and both have spectacular and unrivaled technique. I have no beef with either guy, and if one plays licks similar to other, who cares? What a treat it was to see Palmer in concert and in clinic. I could care less about playin in the pocket for either of them. Let others keep time, these two are born to blaze.
MrRockitRide 2 years ago
does anyone honestly believe that Buddy ripped off ANYTHING from Carl Palmer? As good as Palmer is from a technical standpoint, his solos consist of licks ripped off from a myriad of jazz drummers, from Buddy, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, etc etc. As someone else pointed out, he can't groove at all. When he plays straight, simple beats, his time is all over the map (listen to the studio recording of Lucky Man for evidence of this)
drumuitar 2 years ago
I love Carl Palmers drumming on things like Tarkus and Karn Evil 9... he's really entertaining to listen to and technically proficient.
Drumuitar, you correctly point out (and I say this a big fan of Carl), he is absolutely TERRIBLE in the pocket. I had a drum teacher like this once: The guy could play a million polyrhythms, lightning fast rudiments, etc., but if he played a simple beat, it just sounded choppy and awful. Funny how that can happen.
crispiegee1 2 years ago
@drumuitar No doubt at all.
