Yes, I remember that ... I used to work for SABENA at the time ... I remember there was a Captain Dieu, who told us one day that they did the expérience of "gliding" the Sud Aviation Caravelle" over a quite large distance ... If I remember it well, that Acft had a wide and large wing surface, which made it suitable to glide ! Wonderful aircraft, but with one inconvenience : It was very noisy, the whine of the engine was quite unbearable if you had the misfortune of being seated in the back.
What a great aircraft! I flew on once when I was a child and remember the triangular windows. Shame that Britain never bought any - despite French airlines buying the DH Comet and Vickers Viscount! Instead we made the British Aircraft industry build the Trident, which ended up seating only a few more passengers but with the much higher running costs with that extra engine
@michduncg Hawker Siddeley was forced to make a much smaller aircraft than they originally planned. This larger design was shown to Boeing reps in the hope of a partnership. Boeing refused a partnership and then produced the 727 which almost duplicated the original Trident specifications and built 1800 of them. BEA insisted on a small aircraft and supported by the Air Ministry, who controlled the money, forced the redesign against Hawker Siddeley's advice.
Those were the days of service.... When travel was stylish, the food was gourmet, the service was gracious and everything was 5 stars all the way......... with prices to match. Not to rain on anyone's parade, but flying used to cost 3X what it does now... in economy. Flying did in deed seem special because it was so expensive that for most it was a rare experience. The good old days of service are not gone, if you want to pay for it.... It's called Business Class.
Les plateaux repas !!! Enooormes !!! Dans tous les sens du terme : la taille, les couverts, la vaisselle, et j'imagine : les mets servis !!!! Mon Dieu comme j'aurais aimé vivre cette expérience snif snif......
Excellent, thanks very much. Did you know that Sud-Est paid De Havilland a license to be able to use the nose from the De Havilland Comet on the Caravelle? They are identical.

From what I've heard from an old Caravelle pilot, this plane also makes a very good glider with near-perfect ratio if CG is good
