Great Vid - I have the exact same set-up if you have your merlin measurements for the d90 with the 18-105 could you please post them or email them to me at jsc1805@hotmail.com
Pleasant video, I must say I've been able to achieve shots equally as smooth using my $38 Cam Caddie. I would recommend it to any DIY videographer on a budget.
@ForeverFire Thanks, glad you liked the video. I posted the video in reply to the joshdoube. Check out his DIY video, it has all the details you need.
I did some CC with Magic Bullet. It was supposed to be just a quick throw-together at the time.
how can i get the quality of this footage from my d90? whenever i put footage on my laptop from my d90, via iphoto, it seems fuzzy and not this high quality... what do i do?
@emailwiz2 You need to go into the menu settings on your D90 and change the video quality. I think it defaults to a low quality video to save space on the card. Just go through all of the menus until you find it.
@emailwiz2 Sorry for the late reply, I don't check my youtube account very much. The D90 video is fuzzy to begin with - there is not much you can do. You can remove some artifacting from it using the destep plugin - it removes the jaggies . Google "destep.avs". I didn't apply it to this video though...
I don't have 18-105 lens anymore, I use the most of the time to film a 12-24 tokina and a 50mm f/1.8 which shakes a lot at this focal distance. Do you have already used a 50mm with you steadicam to tell me if the result is good ? Or could you try with you 18-105 with VR off?
@sombresefforts - I recall trying some stuff with the 50mm on. VR was on on the 18-105. I will give it a go with the 50mm and see how that plays out. It's not easy to change lenses on this rig, because you have to rebalance each time...
Nice video, I'm getting a d5000 soon, and I was wondering how you get everything in focus for video, because once it's on a steadicam, you can't really touch the camera's focusing ring because then it screws the camera's balance up.
Thanks for your comment! Before you start filming, just focus to infinity or on a far off object. When I use it, I almost always use it with a short focal length (18mm)...the wider the better.
buddy... of all the homemade videos that i've watched on youtube, yours is stunning... very well shot, steadied and color corrected... might as well mistake this clip as one from the movies.....!! keep up the good work....
@series25 The steadicam is very easy to put together if you follow joshdoube's video. The parts were very easy to find. If you have an HV30 or similiar, this is the way to go.
My Nikon weighs 3 or 4 pounds with the lens on and the center of balance is skewed because of the battery, so balance is more problematic. I think a platform/sled base for the camera would be a better choice. Also my build quality isn't that great and definitely not straight :-).

So you did use Josh's steadicam idea? I'm interested because this is easily one of the best outcomes for a DIY steadicam.

possible a few minor shakes that could have been fixed with some video stabilisation software.
Otherwise, great work!

@cool13q Thanks, it didn't occur to me to try and tweak it with some stabilisation software. I'll have to play with that!
