Bladesmithing isn't a skill you learn in an afternoon.... but with he right ideas (start reasonable, humbly, or you'll end up in a world of failures and frustrations ) and the right directions (there are TONS of very well documented and entertaining beginner's guides to knife making online ) you can achieve encouraging results in a few days/weeks .
Hmm. What you describe isn't a sword. So I don't think you're asking the right persons there.
For a real sword..you would need to ...start making little knives..... using makeshift forge and affordable materials (good quality steel file for the blade , like Anza Knives do, excellent steel for a blade) learning how to heat treat (an untreated steel is worthless, a badly heat treated steel may be even worse -extreme brittleness, or too soft to get and keep an edge)...etc
this sword is known as a han jian i get that is ithat design actually the kind used in the han dynasty or was it just called that... .. admittedly in not 100% sure about how jian have changed over time. but do you have much idea when iron and steel jian first started being used.
@elgostine Good question. Basically this is called "han jian" because it mimics the fittings and blade dimensions of jian(though to be fair, it would need to be a 6 to 8 sided blade to be more accurate) made during that time period. As far as how jian changed over time, check here: it goes into the detail I can't with this stupid 500 character limit: en(dot)wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/Chinese_swords#Late_Spring_and_Autumn_to_Early_Warring_States_(dot)28500BC_-_350BC(dot)29
@Swordsage and out of curiousity, that thing seems to have a very long grip. youve mentioned before that there are tales of old ,marial atists during the warring states oeriod etc. is there any mention of the possible use, maybe the transitioning between 1 and 2 handed grips?
@elgostine While off hand I don't know of any tales of warring states period swordsmen switching between one and two hands per se, I do generally know that it was done, and this can easily be seen in the two handed jian forms that people practice today. If you look them up on YouTube, you will see them switch back and forth between the two grips. Even the one handed forms can have a two handed application; the fingers on the wrist isn't always that in actually application.
@karis630 First, if you're going to talk to me, speak English.
Second, this isn't a toy. Otherwise it wouldn't be able to cut as well as it does. Keep in mind this video was made a YEAR ago, and the sword STILL performs beautifully. This shows you really don't know much about swords. So the only person who lost face here is you.
@karis630 Actually, I don't know Chinese. I just put your text through an online translator. I respond in English because it's the language I know, plus if I tried to put it back into Chinese, it would probably not come out right.
Now, to your points: I don' t know why you keep insisting this isn't a Chinese sword: It was made in a Chinese forge, using fittings molded after old Chinese swords. Also, they call it a "han jian", not because it is from that dynasty, but because it LOOKS like one.
People who buy this aren't stupid enough to think this sword is an antique from that era. But the fittings and the overall look of the blade look like one from that time period. So maybe you would feel happier if they called it a jian with a Han dynasty motif. But at the end of the day, it's still a real jian; it's balanced correctly, it's made with the right type of steel, and it will not fall apart during a fight. It's a real sword. If it offends you, sorry, but it is what it is.
Now, from what I'm getting from your post, you seem to be upset with what you call the decline of your culture. As someone here in the west who sees what you're talking about, I understand that anger, but honestly, it's not my fault. I just wanted a sword to practice with for my martial arts, and I got one. What you seem to be upset with, is the marketing of your culture, and for that, you need take your complaints up with the people responsible, namely the charlatans in your country.
@Swordsage Lol judging by the activity of OP's channel, he created his account specifically to post his response to your video.
I'm Chinese, read and speak Chinese and frankly even I don't really get what he's trying to say. There is a little bit if ingrained racism in his post most likely because some Chinese can't stand non-chinese (white, black, latino, Japanese) talking about Chinese culture like they actually care about it.
@Swordsage As for your video, it's not a professional review of a sword by any stretch but it's a very thorough product review. I actually have the same sword as you do in the video (wouldn't know which one of the two it was closer to without side by side comparison). the blade is top notch, but my one gripe is the pommel, which is a bit too sharp and digs into the arm/wrist when I'm wielding it.
Not a bad sword for amateur collectors like us. Don't mind people like karis he's just trolling.
You should be happy that "we" enjoy your culture and history even if we're often mislead by some greedy cinema producers and *many* chinese themselves who sell all sort of tourist crap claiming it's a "fine chinese [insert desirable item]".
well my 21st is coming up september, gotta get cracking to raise some cash maybe then. but all of those swords, OMG, such works of art its amazing, im near struck speechless at some of the blades i see from the chinese sword makers, but still
like i said, have no motivation other than atristry, for getting a blade like that.
i am glad though that jin shi's doing well, andi assume that blades still going strong foryou,
@elgostine Oh yes, the swords are still holding up. Just yesterday I was doing some forms practice in the backyard, as well as a little bit of cutting practice. The jian was still cutting through water bottles effortlessly. My new next door neighbor happened to have watched, and was shocked by how easily the sword cut through. He had never seen a real sword up close before, much less in action. It was a fun moment, especially when he said it was the coolest thing he had seen. :P
@Swordsage Oh, and before I forget... if you simply just want a Chinese sword for how beautiful they look (and are a stickler for them actually being, well, real), you might want to save a little bit more to get a sanmei blade, instead of a mono steel blade like mine. A sanmei blade is simply just a pattern welded blade, but the patterns are so beautiful. I can pm you links to some examples if you want.
@Swordsage heh, im thinking if anyone sees my swords theire gonna run for their lives :P
ive also posted a vid of me cutting milk jugs with my wushi-ish dao, and im gonna post more, with that cheap jian i mentioned a coupla months back the one we were discussing the balancepoint of.
figuredu might wanna see sthose cheaper swords puttingup a surprisingly good show. (theyre still CRAP though ill admit that one openly.
*apologies for shameles plug of my channel, still a fledgeling in all this biz
btw, how long usually does it take your videos to upload to yotube, im wondering because mine kep taking a while. an hour for a 4 minute video, is that normal transfer rate?
@elgostine Honestly, I've been noticing that it's taking longer and longer for me to upload my videos. Granted, I keep coming up with freaking damn long videos, but they used to take around 10-12 minutes, tops. The latest one took me 44 minutes!
Still, the size of the video file will play a factor in how long it will take to upload, as well as the length. So even if you are uploading a 4 minute video, if it's a big file, it will take a while.
@elgostine Woah... that IS a lot! My videos rarely go past 70mb, and they tend to be over 10 minutes!
I think you may want to bring the size of those videos down a notch if you want quicker uploads. Usually, converting them to a space saving file format like .wmv will do the trick. Then again, the bigger the file, the better the video quality. so if you are uploading some crystal clear wide-screen video, then I can see why it's so high, though there are ways to size even those down.
ooooh WHY oh WHY did i have to join a martial art that by its nature doesnt have swords ... (okinawan kobudo.)
that sword.. WOW, id say that sword s how id want a sword, normal sized blade, extra long handle for the opion of 2 handed grip, the moment i saw it i fell in love with the han dynasty blade big stought, yet not too chunky. how much was the original?
@elgostine 300 bucks flat, not including shipping. Really, it was a hell of a deal. I'm hearing that Jin-Shi is doing fairly well, as news is spreading via word of mouth how good the quality of the swords are. Still, they could always use more business.
Weight out on the tip makes a pretty big difference in terms of how quick a blade feels in my experience. Even with the same weight different distribution can make it 'quicker.' Also less strength is needed out there since it's further out the lever-arm of the blade.
By the same token of course it means you have a little less energy (proportional the the weight difference) behind the swings since you have less momentum (unless you're moving faster)
Geez. If that was my sword, I wouldn't use it to chop anything. Anything other than some poor dickweed who decides to break into my house while I'm there.
Did you just say what I think you just say?!?! Chosonninja is the laughing stock of the sword community. These are han dynasty jian, I've actually held the exact same swords. Please learn your sword information from more reliable sources.
chinese people came from korea, korea invented chinese characters and language and korea sent people to japan and japan made korean people the kings and thats why japanese dna is the same as korean dna. don't you watch any chosonninja videos? you are a racist
Please tell me you're being sarcastic. The Chinese and Korean language look completely different. Also, I am not racist. I work for Garrett Chan who is the producer of Swordsages sword, and I am in a traditional Chinese swordsmanship class were I am the only Caucasian.

Pretty cool, though the sword pattern is used for Chinese bronze ceremonial sword, rather a practical steel/iron sword pattern.
