  • 240p, we meet yet again . . .

  • Does this also explain what happened to the bear tail? I thought you were about to say the bear been there, done that. Ha, Ha -

  • Love native American stories.......just wonderful!

  • is there a moral to the story?

  • My granfather told me this when I was young, great story! This guy tell it better tho, great storyteller. Joe, Keetoowah Cherokee, Oklahoma.

  • This story is extremely similar with a famous folkloric Romanian story. But in the Romanian story the fox tricked a bear (the bear, the wolf and the sheep are the heart of the Romanian culture). So the bear went fishing and the bear lost its tail. It's so interesting to find out that all cultures in the world are related to each other!

  • Love this story

  • that is the same cherokee story that was told to me when i was child my father told it to me i am cherokee paint clan

  • "Ooohhhh!". I always wondered. Good story. Thanks

  • white man

  • RIP ganahli, you are missed.

  • Cute! I love it! I would like to know the Storytellers name, too. I liked the flute playing.

  • thats what i call a tall tale

  • Gregg Howard began learning the Cherokee language when his family moved to Oklahoma in the 60s and he learned of his Indian heritage. His mother (Corinne Tyldesley) and her mother (Sophie Sutphin) were both Cherokee/Powhattan descendants. His great grandmother (Anne Martin) was Cherokee & English.

  • Gregg teaches Cherokee language & history in Dallas and Collin Creek Community College in Plano, Texas, is a member of the Oklahoma Native Language Assoc., Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers, The National Storytellers Association, and Tejas Storytellers. spokesman for the Cherokee Honor Society in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and the Ambassador of the Cherokee Nation of Mexico

  • You know what's coming and still it surprises you! I love it! I laughed myself silly! The best way to tell and teach!

  • white guy telln a native story..thats tipical.

  • Hehe, in my country this story is about the fox and the bear. I use to ask my mom to tell it to me at night in bed. :)

  • this man reminds me of my grandfather. i love his laugh at the end :)

  • I feel sorry for the storyteller because those kids faces are so deadpan.

  • I love native American legends my fav legend is a story called dog husband I forgot wat tribe it came from though

  • I love native American legends! My fav legend is a story called dog husband I forgot wat tribe it came from though

  • I found the story kind of familiar!. You know it could be funny, but my grandmother told me a very similar story but about the fox and the wolf (the wolf at the beginning had a tail even more full as the one of the fox), The strange fact is that I am Latvian ( North-East Europe) and the stories are very similar. I had almost forgot it and now I will try to remember it and write it down!

    Have a good day!

  • There is a very similar story of the rabbit and fox also among Ainu people. It is amazing!

  • this story was told to me when i was a child it brings me happyness to see the story goes on

  • there is the same fairytale in Ukraine. It's crazy

  • this is supposed to be about the bear and fox an why the bear has a short tail an why it hibernates all winter, this guy aint no real story teller

  • true absolutley true...thats the way i was told

  • It says he is using the traditional way, not that he is one. "There are dozens of Ji-Stu stories. They were the basis for the "Uncle Remus" stories. Cherokee Chief, John Ross, in a letter to his son in l865 wrote about how the Terrapin beat Ji-Stu. Ross wrote that "in the long run, it is the slow and steady pull that accomplishes the most in life". Checkout James Mooney, Myths of the Cherokees, Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology 1897-98.

  • omg i loved that story

  • Wado for posting this i love this story

  • a very nice story told thanks for sharing with me aho

  • Love the legend and his presentation! Did you see the faces of the precious young ones? If only we all would listen to one another with such intentness..

  • sorry to say greg howard isn't a traditional storyteller and any speaker of the language would laugh at his attempt of the language. i've met him several times and have found him to be just another guy trying to be something he really isn't. i place him on the same level as those who claim to be medicine people. he's a good storyteller but i wish he'd just be himself.

  • Quite often when we read our ancestoral stories we take on a bit of our ancestors joy or pain. I think he is being himself!

Being a traditional storyteller is to read a traditional story in the intention of teaching our children through our emotions and skills and personality. Actions speak more than words, but words last forever in our minds and hearts!

    Peace friend and relative!

    Ohkwa:ri'

  • The story is traditional but the storyteller isn't, That's my point. As I mentioned, I've met him a few times and he's not being himself in this clip.

However, being a TRADITIONAL storyteller doesn't include reading - the stories we tell are from our elders and they are passed down in the family and clans. We don't learn them from books. And usually, they are told in our language.

greg howard is more of a performer than a storyteller. But he is good.

  • Agreed, the language of the telling of the story is the way it was meant to be passed on.

Thanks and have a good one!

    Ohkwa:ri'

  • once i get down my native tongue

im gonna teach it to my children

its gonna be like breathing to them

    preserve are dying language

  • 2:59.lol.very funny.

  • I think youre 1/3 native american over all. ( to coopersboy7)

  • That is so cool!! I dont have the skin color, but I have high cheek bones like my moms mom. People tell me that I have the cheeks and the eyes for indian, but with white shin and dark blonde hair. LOL

  • Thats cool , you probably do.:)

  • don't worry I read somewhere that Crazy horse had almost blonde hair, people thought he might be half but he was full blooded.

  • Not 2 start an argument but where on Earth did u hear that? I have never heard of such maybe it was white but not blonde

  • Hey by the way do you mind if I send you a friend request??

  • sure that would be great.:)

  • Thats is actually quite a bit 1/16 Like it really matters anyway. I am proud of it too.:) to criss baby2008

  • Im trying to figure out how much Ive got in me, my grandma's great grandma was a cheerokee Indian. and my other grandma's grandma was a creek Indian. How much would that be for me?? My Mom gets Indian from two different sides of her family, her dad and her mom.

  • well youre atleast 1/8 cherokee (Tsalagi) which is quite a bit. And atleast 1/4 Muskogee ceek which is is even more. So I guess just add the two fraction to gether for over all native american ancestry. Of course its all good even you other ancestries are just as beautiful.:) Im not surre how to add fractions though ive never was good in math.

  • Thanks bro!! and I aint no good at math either LOL. and thanks about my other ancestry!! Hard to find nice people on youtube that like to help each other.

  • If only they allowed youtube during school time I'd let my students listen to this wonderful man. Let me talk to my advisor and see if I can allow to play this video.

  • finally done w/ my homework ne1 4 chat?

  • You have no authority over the people, one drop of the blood of an ancestor is even more than is required to be Cherokee. If the Sun and the Earth call you to the land, if you live in harmony with the Great Spirit you are a Human Being. You speak like the white eyes, when you deny a wandering brother or sister a seat at the fire. Shame on you for your intolerance for those that wish to be part of your family. Ask the Great Spirit to soften your heart and enlighten your soul. Peace to you friend.

  • Nice story. and very glad that you posted it. thank you.

  • Well excuse me for being proud of my heritage. Just because u ain't proud of YOUR heritage or anything else 4 that matter don't mean that noone else is.

  • I love Native American culture I think it's beautiful. I have Native American Ancestry and hope to find some of my family members this summer.

  • If you know your parents' and grandparents' names that should not be too difficult.I bet you will find that you have been living near or working with a relative.I seem to find realtives all over Canada and the States.Wherever I go there is someone who is related, I kid you not, It's wonderful.
