There is a slight pause to make sure they all get the finishes at the same time. If you saw in the pairs rowing you would see the hands constantly moving. It's a just a drill. Notice also how aggressive the feather is to get that "clunk".
Also, I believe that in "normal" rowing a pause at the finish will give more run but the boat has a longer time to decelerate and therefore will be slower overall. Pausing at the finish also keeps the weight in the bows which digs into the water, slows down
My goodness: what happens?? I don't like the catch at all. It isn't smooth and there is a slight pause in which the slide stops, *then* they catch. Sure this is intended, considering who they are... :^)
The rest is absolutely ready for the Handbook of Sweep Rowing. Thx for posting this beautiful footage!
i wouldn't call it a pause, they still move the hands its just very slow and controlled. works for them so fair play, i know i don;t have that many olympic golds.
is this the tape that originally had voice over by Noel Donaldson and also had many other crews from Atlanta (used to have the tape but grew legs)

The slight pause works well for really strong rowers , it is best to keep the hands moving at all times.

This is pretty awesome. One of the best 4's ever. I like the slight pause at the finish, helps get that extra run out of every stroke

Mahe Dryhesdale does the same thing. You can see it even in the last 500 of the last WC.
