yes i play guitar and piano so i already one up''d ya'' lol and stringed instruments are harder to play, anyone can make notes come out of a piano, its the simplest thing i ever done : )
@evelskunny Glad you're enjoying this. It's been a while since someone with your particular way of processing information deemed yourself qualified to criticize me. Maybe I should return the favor and criticize your guitar playing. I noticed that you read "guitar books." Do those teach you how to play with feeling? Is it possible to retain all that information and play guitar with feeling simultaneously?
you can know all the theroy in the world,ya we know a minor = c major ya we know a major = f # minor, but if you dont have it in you,its not gonna come out right! piano was the easiest thing I ever did, after playing guitar for like 20 years, stringed instruments are much harder to play,a lot more steps are involved to make the note come out, anyone can hit a note on a piano and make sound! remeber that! : )
@evelskunny I like to experience a full range of colors. I like to experience a full range of emotions. Just because someone else can't experience that doesn't mean that I don't have in me. My musical existence doesn't serve the purpose of making it okay for stupid people who don't know what the fuck they're doing to criticize me. And you are very naive in thinking that what you're telling me is new to me. I've heard it before.
@evelskunny Ever brought a lady to an intense orgasm? I have. You can't do that if you don't "have it in you." But you have to put thought into it. Not only do you have to feel it, you have to put thought into what you're doing or she won't come. Are you satisfied yet? Because I have determined that you are incapable relating to what I'm telling you musically, so I picked something that maybe you can relate to--sex.
@evelskunny "its not gonna come out right!" Are we talking right and wrong? You mean the right and wrong where you just say it's wrong without being able to explain why it's wrong, because it just "feels" wrong? The problem with that system is that it rewards mindless stupidity.
@evelskunny I just play too. I simply happen to understand what I'm playing so that some ignorant person can't come here and suggest that I don't know what I'm doing. And here's something about knowledge that one should consider. Knowledge doesn't limit what I can do, knowledge expands what I can do. Dick Dale and I have something in common, we play what works for us, and neither one of us likes being limited in any way.
@evelskunny Haven't heard of Dick Dale. About "just playing," I think my philosophy is simple. I think putting thought into what you do produces better results. For instance, I put some thought into this comment and didn't respond with something mindless like "whatever."
I have noticed that some people on YouTube try to bring people down without putting thought into what they're doing. When people feel the need to do that it does bother me. But I really appreciate the positive feedback. :)
@gncrs0123456789 I've studied harmony for a long time. I know exactly what I'm doing. I could explain it to you, but you might not understand. Want me to explain it to you?
@fingerjazz your piano sings it's own song not tom's diner.thats just what i feel you dont have to know sometimes..its enough to feel it, no need to explain anything.
@gncrs0123456789 Music is a language, and there are people that don't understand the advanced use of that language. How do I know that your problem isn't that you don't understand the language as well as I do? Doesn't it occur to you that someone who's studied music for most of his life has some idea of how it's supposed to feel? And if you come on here claiming to know something that you think I don't know, don't you think I'm going to ask you to explain yourself?
@gncrs0123456789 "your piano sings it's own song." It's called a "countermelody." Do you know what a countermelody is, or is it that you simply lack the capacity to "feel" a countermelody? Do you know what "passing harmonies" are? How familiar are you with dissonance? Are you aware that dissonance is one of the techniques used to create tension? You see, understanding the language allows me to feel the song the way I enjoy feeling it. And I have that in common with over 600 people.
Honestly, I'd like to see what would have happened if she did the acappella version 2nd. I would want to see how many people would find the acappella version inferior if that were the case.
@jjmkismymiddlename Don't feel sorry for me. It's more enjoyment for those who can enjoy more than one way to perform a tune. Suzanne Vega herself would agree or else she wouldn't have put out "Tom's Album."
for all you shit fucks out there that click on the video, dislike it it ,then put ''sucks'' or any other dumbass comment, dont watch the video in the first place. you could be spending this 3 minutes fucking your self

This version is gorgeous, but i'm kinda glad she couldn't find a pianist, because I do like the other version better. But it may just be that I am used to hearing it the other way.. Either way she has a really beautiful simple voice.
Also, VictorLepanto made a very interesting comment that I accidently deleted:
------
It has always seemed to me that this song is evocative of something mystical. In the description of the observations of ordinary even banal seeming events all around her, it suggests something more. The disconnected actions of those around her high light her own isolation. This is no more about a moment in a diner any more then Rilke's "Panther" is about a caged cat.
@blackball1990 Okay. So if you're going to judge me or use me for target practice, then you need to understand what I'm doing. Can you analyze harmonically my chord progression in the third verse? Shakespeare knew what he was doing and so do I. Does the comparison make a little more sense to you now?
@blackball1990 And don't you think that when there is nothing but repetition, that music doesn't go anymore? Yet, basically the commercial version was without melody. This one is a lot more sophisticated and interesting than the commercial known version, quite ordinary in fact
Almost all artist sometimes suddenly create something that obtains a world wide popularity although they didnt expect it at all, everyone knows the song but there is hardly anyone who knows the author..This timeless hit is an excellent example. And this particular video is especially great!
I heard it when I was young, very hypnotic song, evoking a very realistic picture of everyday life. Just like good B&W street photos. Just love it! Thank you for uploading fingerjazz. Excellent sound quality. I don't even know this version exist.
@dweetyboy oh boy, did you notice the difference between the audio quality from her talking and the song? the song and the vid are 2 different things.
Such a good voice, such good lyrics, such a good atmosphere. I love almost every version of this song. This could be one of my favorites. Wish there was a single album release with this on it. Fantastic song.
I knew about Vega's a cappella version, and also about the DNA remix. But I saw this and immediately started searching for an MP3 to buy. It took me a few minutes to realize this was a fan-made accompaniment. :(
Great job! You match the mood perfectly - a mix between the melancholy and the whimsical.
I love your playing, it changes the song into a different song, but its just as good if not better in some respects. I think it also takes away some of the original song's repetitiveness, which is nice. Thank you.
I commented a long time ago Fingerjazz, but since the comments scroll away pretty quickly, I just wanted to add to what others have said: You have taken a fine song and made it even more memorable. ....I start every week watching this version and consider it one of the best things on YouTube. Thanks.
She's not lip synching, billy. This video has a different audio track played over it for the part after the intro. The original version of the video has its own sound and no piano.
@KNO3888 Thanks! I wanted to see how far I could go harmonically without clashing with the melody. I knew I ran the risk of going overboard, but my hope was that they helped build the piece and set up the last part. Dynamically, there's not that much in the original version, so I am kind of going in a different direction than the original. But if it's unique and interesting, I'll settle for that. Also, my chords are my colors, and I love color. ;)
So I'm gonna hear some negative stuff about this I'm sure...but after hearing this version, I thought about how a mash up between the acapella and the instrumental of "Flashing Lights" by Kanye West. I think if done correctly, that could be amazing. Just my thought, don't smite me.
@namekman01 and just for the record, I've loved this song for years. I remember singing this when I was 4 or 5 and I'm 18. So for anyone who may think I don't appreciate this song for what it is, you're sadly mistaken. this is one of my favorite songs of all time.
I brought it up because it was something that popped into my head, and I felt like sharing. If you listen to Flashing lights and you put Tom's Diner (acapella) over it, I think it would sound really nice (if done correctly). I brought it up on this particular video because the piano playing put the whole thought into motion.
This had to have been a helluva challenge. Fingerjazz, you're very talented. I love the way you carried on through her pauses. And the chords! Like Chopin if he played jazz. I just managed to find a very old harmony book that Miles Davis taught himself with by George Gibbs. But I have such trouble with effortless chord fingering. Did you ever find a book that helped, or was it mostly your teachers? Thanks...love your channel!
SO what ima do is Grab these chords cuz they are some beautiful stuff, and sample the hell outta this song into a beat ima try and make :) its ok if you hate me. old heads.
Just a quick word to say how much I appreciate the kind thoughtful comments I've been getting. I kind of have to laugh at the last comment about the tempo. If my tempo was wrong, the recording would be out of sync. Suzanne sings it too syncopated and precise for me to call it "largo." Perhaps moderato--quarter note = something like 100, subdivided into 16th notes. At first, I couldn't imagine how a piano would fit, but when I meet a challenge, it's very satisfying for me. :)
I like how the piano is playing but the tempo is all wrong. the piano is going allegro and this song is largo. meaning slow speed. allegro is fast speed. I like the originial
Largo isn't just speed, it's style. It's broad, slow, connected, kind of like legato but it refers to a more dignified way of playing. Vega's singing pace is about moderato, and the style disconnected, almost staccato..
It has always seemed to me that this song is evocative of something mystical. In the description of the observations of ordinary even banal seeming events all around her, it suggests something more. Thid disconnected actions of those around her high light her own isolation. This is no more about a moment in a diner any more then Rilke's "Panther" is about a caged cat.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this one you can tell she's stuck on some idea and it's manifested in how she looks at the camera. at 0:53 she first enjoys opening up and this starts the thought, then 1:34 is union in speech and thought (and so is the whole song in a way), at right before 2:00 she forgets this idea and so it is 'nicer'.. then at one point her eyelids get wide (2:05-2:06) and the idea explodes then she isn't stuck (manifested by the unforced 'eye contact' that follows)..
Great job fingerjazz. You added great colors to a black and white masterpiece. You should be
very proud of yourself.

Good facial expressions around 2:00, when the pianist starts going pretty far afield with the chord selection -- like she's shooting a look and a smile to say: "You're intentionally trying to throw me off, aren't you?" But she's rock steady on the melody. I've always liked the way she just sings the note -- none of the Whitney / Idol nonsense of stretching every syllable up and down over 3 octaves to show off the range. Pure, like Mary Ford with Les Paul (though a completely different voice.)

I commented a long time ago Fingerjazz, but since the comments scroll away pretty quickly, I just wanted to add to what others have said: You have taken a fine song and made it even more memorable. ....I start every week watching this version and consider it one of the best things on YouTube. Thanks.

@brucerby I really appreciate your comments. This is the kind of thing that inspires me to create music. :)

She's not lip synching, billy. This video has a different audio track played over it for the part after the intro. The original version of the video has its own sound and no piano.

Like it... 'strange sounding' better than boring, predictable melody. Thanks for sharing.
pseudonym1964 2 years ago
@KNO3888 Thanks! I wanted to see how far I could go harmonically without clashing with the melody. I knew I ran the risk of going overboard, but my hope was that they helped build the piece and set up the last part. Dynamically, there's not that much in the original version, so I am kind of going in a different direction than the original. But if it's unique and interesting, I'll settle for that. Also, my chords are my colors, and I love color. ;)

I LOVE THIS.
I also had an idea.
So I'm gonna hear some negative stuff about this I'm sure...but after hearing this version, I thought about how a mash up between the acapella and the instrumental of "Flashing Lights" by Kanye West. I think if done correctly, that could be amazing. Just my thought, don't smite me.

i listen to kanye sometimes, but why would u bring him up in this vid
namekman01 2 years ago
@namekman01 it kinda popped into my head when I heard...just the instrumentation. and I always been a fan of random mash-ups
I'm pretty sure it'd be hard to find a more random mash up than Suzanne Vega and Kanye
MyWrighteousPathTV 2 years ago
@namekman01 and just for the record, I've loved this song for years. I remember singing this when I was 4 or 5 and I'm 18. So for anyone who may think I don't appreciate this song for what it is, you're sadly mistaken. this is one of my favorite songs of all time.
MyWrighteousPathTV 2 years ago
i didnt say u disliked it, i asked why did u bring kanye up in a vid like this
namekman01 2 years ago

Thanks...love your channel!
afmafmafm 2 years ago

fingerjazz 2 years ago
I like how the piano is playing but the tempo is all wrong. the piano is going allegro and this song is largo. meaning slow speed. allegro is fast speed. I like the originial
agentmonkey810 2 years ago
This isn't largo at all.
Largo isn't just speed, it's style. It's broad, slow, connected, kind of like legato but it refers to a more dignified way of playing. Vega's singing pace is about moderato, and the style disconnected, almost staccato..

im kinda glad she didnt have a piano player at the time because the original version is pure genius!

To Victor Lepanto: EXCELLENT COMMENT - I agree this song has a deeper meaning.
brucerby 2 years ago 3
It has always seemed to me that this song is evocative of something mystical. In the description of the observations of ordinary even banal seeming events all around her, it suggests something more. Thid disconnected actions of those around her high light her own isolation. This is no more about a moment in a diner any more then Rilke's "Panther" is about a caged cat.
VictorLepanto 2 years ago 21
@VictorLepanto I suggest there is no better way to describe it. It's exactly the same I see in this masterpiece.

this one you can tell she's stuck on some idea and it's manifested in how she looks at the camera. at 0:53 she first enjoys opening up and this starts the thought, then 1:34 is union in speech and thought (and so is the whole song in a way), at right before 2:00 she forgets this idea and so it is 'nicer'.. then at one point her eyelids get wide (2:05-2:06) and the idea explodes then she isn't stuck (manifested by the unforced 'eye contact' that follows)..
