  • @turtlliwdnifuoyehthr beat me to it

  • Comment removed

  • this video should have over a million views

  • Fraid I never heard of John Prine till a few years ago,BUT i AM CATCHING UP FAST.

  • I would like 2 see Barbara Lewis by John Prine & not by some slacker,,,,LOL JK

  • Mr. Prine is no less than a genius. If ever given opportunity, I will bow to him, then offer a beer and a smoke.

  • Beammegill, Thanks for that. I get the message.

  • There's one song I know as well as I know anything, this is it. Thank you John.

  • John Prine wrote songs with insight way beyond his years. Perhaps one of the greatest songwriters of all time, who never got the accolades he deserved. So those of us who know him, will enjoy whenever we listen to him

  • John is truly an American icon. Such a poignent song writer and player. For the life of me I can't understand why 6 people disliked this. They must be true igmos and have little or no knowledge of what music is or why its a reflection of the harshness and happiness of the times we live in.

  • My requiem I guess, oh well I cant change now life has lost its fun...

  • you filled a hole

  • RIP Grant Johnston

  • How many Sam Stone's do I know? Many.

  • @foreilly1958 too many I was 3/3 1965-66

  • 6 people are listening on broken radios.

  • Sometimes it takes a lot of listening before you actually hear something. John Prine is worth it.

  • there is a hole in daddy's arm breaks my heart everytime

  • Absoluety the greatest! Yes Johns the man.

  • It's been a long time since a song has brought me to tears, and John has done it twice today.

  • I grew up listening to this tune..Can't hear it without thinking of my Father

  • lov it.. hope folks understand it

  • welcome home vets.......

  • john prine is probably the best singer/songwriter that never really got the recognition he truly deserved.

  • @oldstampsfan My Fav Song In THE WORLD this is the most heartfelt song and it really has what todays music lacks. I think of music as the ultimate form of communication and John Prines Sam Stone Is A PERFECT example of what I mean when I say that :D

  • My favorite instrumental is "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" LIVE by the Allman brothers. Duane had some very fast and useful fingers - but I still care greatly for John Prine's attitude toward the world and his ability to express it. My favorite of his is probably "Hello In There" but this song (Sam Stone) carries an understanding of the Viet Nam war and our society at that time that hurts. Some of his songs are hard to listen to, but his attitude is right. Being right is a good thing.

  • this isn't the genre of music I usually prefer; I'm a hard rock fan, primarily. This man's lyrics draw me back again & again

  • Magic

  • Yes it is as painful to hear the truth as it is to see it in the mirror. This sorrow we some share

  • my name is Samuel T. Stone and i aprove this message!....to make things clear I am 22, employed and a non-junkie!

  • I wore my John Prine tshirt to school and a kid in my class asked me who he is... what has the world come to

  • Wrote songs at 23 years old that sounded more like he was 200 years old.

  • I love this song so much it is better than anything with rap and all that. I am 12 years old and i like verything but this is the best song ever

  • The lyrics are very interesting, but the delivery is unappealing to me.

  • Little pictures have big ears! Been sayin that since I was 3! Thanks 4 this version!

  • I love this song and it has so much meaning.

  • we are not adict we are hurt, put the boots on and try it!

  • @MrZannusi ThankYou for your service SIR!

  • Saw John Prine in concert in Florida in 2001? One of my husbands favorite musicians and he was mine too after that night!

  • Jason Pierce (Spiritualized) stole some of the lyrics of this song for the "Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space" album.

  • "Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios." I always loved the line, but I never really knew what it meant until I came to love an addict. If you love one, you know, too.

  • @johnnyghee

    amen johhny...amen. ;-)

  • "while the kids ran around wearing other people's clothes...." WOW

  • 4 people have no clue.

  • yeah u damn addics takin my air

  • John Prine is perhaps the best songwriter and singer I have ever heard. Others sound better, but none have his sense. I am brought to tears by several tunes and to sheer laughter by others. I expect he is one of the great gifts given to us in the last 100 years.

  • @willmpet you called that right...and I was fortunate enough to have seen him at the Paramount in Seattle back in the late 70's

  • @willmpet I feel just the same. My husband was in Nam....came home addicted to heroin, blew up our tv.....all John's songs relate to many of our years together. Even Illegal Smile.........................he is very special. Was a postman writing songs......It alway seems funny to me when someone "just discovers" John Prine after all these years. For me it has been 45 years. Love to you........................

  • My name is Sam Stone......lol

  • best song ever

  • the gold rolled through his veins like a thousand railroad trains

  • Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and John Prine, the three greatest singer / songwriters of the last century.

  • @TheNigelc8

Woody Guthrie inspired them all, add him to your list too :)

  • I have always known of John Prine but only very recently took the time to listen to his music. One of the very few good decisions I've ever made.

  • @MrHankanthony As A vietnam vet. Have sang and played his music. But just recently sank in.

  • @monkeyonhisback Me too- I corps.3/3 1965-66 Corpsman

  • @MrHankanthony Amen Brother.

  • Painful to listen to this song, but I keep coming back ...

  • War is HELL!!!

  • love this song

  • Shows just how much war can royally fuck someone up. Bring the boys home before there's more damage than we can fix.

  • @SithianHawk A men brother.........We have ruined lives of our young men for generations....WWII lasted for 4 years Vietnam 7years many broken hearts and minds...We have now been at War for 10 years with no end in site...And we are cutting back on social services???? God help us all

  • a song of such beauty and compassion.. John Prine is a treasure and what a musician .....swoon!

  • To our troops! We love you!

  • this was my dad...make me cry a little

  • This is truly a great song. Says more about bring the the boys back home before we lose more. And since you asked for requests, how about come back to us barbara lewis?

  • I remember this song when I 1st heard in back in the early 80's.I heard a soul version to it,yet it is still revelant 2day.Thanks for posting it

  • Thank you.

  • Saw John Prine in the Gold Ballroom of the Mountainlair at West Virginia University in the early 1970's. Everyone in the crowd knew every word to every song and it remains one of my favorite concert memories. Prine was blown away that the crowd knew all of his songs. He was transcendent that evening. Thank you for posting.

  • I lived thru Vietnam War,close2 Vet Friends who spoke the Truth about all they experienced&shared its stories, some inspirational, some sad like Sam Stone's. I worked hard w/Peace Action Council 2welcomeVietnamVets back w/Love &gratitude 4 what they put on the line 4us.Our Leaders need 2make sure our soldiers &families R properly honored &taken care of - they risked all for us &return with nothing or Less than Nothing- shadows of who they were b4. GodBless them &keep them SafeHappy& loved.

  • THIS SONG PRETTY SAY IT ALL ABOUT HOW WE TREAT OUR GREAT AMEIRCAN HEROS OUR VETS

  • omg this tune brings a tear to me eye

  • we have a long standing history of treating our vets like shit, horrible, everyone should find and watch march of the bonous army, its a ken burns film about how we fucked our ww1 vets who were promised a bonous, douglas mcarther led part time national guard flunkies and violently broke up a peaceful protest of vets who were lied to by uncle sam.

  • I was talking to my 26 year old son about Viet Nam and remimbered this song. I had to look for it. it's so sad the way we do our people. It's a shame.

  • thoughtful and painful song. sadly, we can see this all around us. wish our vets were better taken care of

  • I love it !!

  • For many years after the Vietnam conflict, his song would bring tears to my eyes.

  • Deeply moving.

  • thanks for posting this , it reminds me of a friend who died in a far away land but didn't know it till he came back here.

  • there was a hole in my girlfriends arm here all the money went

  • supreme songwriting

  • This song is so true of some of the Vietnam vets, its' sad to think so many young men couldn't be the same boy that went to war. I love this song, and I cry everytime I hear it.

  • Genius, The chick that showed my youngest daughter how t shoot it died. Stay away people.

  • Genius

  • i still remember when i first hear this album(last night) i was blown way abut his greatness

  • this song gets me every time :')

  • I heard this on the radio a couple weeks ago, and it still sticks with me. I'm adding it to my repertoire.

  • Real music passed down from god to imperfect humans : D

  • Oh, my gawd, Cos, I love this sad, sad song. Unfortunately, I know more people than I care to admit who have suffered with heroin addiction. So sad. Love John Prine, and I've seen him perform many times, when he was young and 'old'. This is so sad. :(

  • fukin proper tune innit wow proper lyrics peace

  • i was just a kid when i was turned on to john prine,i shared this love of music with my son brian, who has turned out to be a lot like me..i guess thats the best a father can hope for...forever indebted to you tommy spriggs,my good friend..

  • Comment removed

  • reminds me of my dad. the way he was when i was little.

  • me and my daddy can't listen to this song without tearing up....beautiful music amazing lyrics John Prine <3

  • yeah, tominniti, that's the first thing that I noticed... An interesting allusion by the Floyd - i mean, Waters - though. It's as though the post war dream led ultimately to heroin...

  • everybody check out how much pink floyd rips off this song in their song "Post War Dream". Its such obvious theft

  • @tominniti I noticed this when The Final Cut was first released, however,I think that it's more of an homage than theft...Waters has enough in his head than to resort to "lifting" ....just a thought.

  • @somame69 yeah, thats what everyones been sayin. probably

  • @tominniti check out The Show Must Go On vs. Paul Simon's The Only Boy Living in New York

  • There is just nothing like the original... the emotion... the sarcasim.... its all in there, wow chilling,,,, thanks for the post

  • lost half my friends to heroin, song says a lot,God bless our veterans

  • An amazing song with an unforgettable line: "There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes - and Jesus Christ died for nothing, I suppose."

  • you might ofnoticed from my profile name but my name really is sam stone.

  • My friend Al played this the other day for me... it's harrowing, the lyrics, that is, coupled with the songs serenity.

  • reminds me of the brothers lost in Viet Nam.

...don't stop to count the years...

  • parhhesia...Well said. This song helped me off the needle 30 yrs ago

  • heartbreaker

  • Keys'd sound better with cello,,,yer thoughts???

  • What a story.

  • @fngrpkn06 : sad but soooo true! Who could've said it better than Johnboy?!

  • my dad/bestfriend showed me this too. these old guys really know good music. maybe we should take their word every once in awhile. theyve been through it all.

  • Excelent! I was in the vietnam era and also a recoverind addict. Sounds wxcactly correct ad I have loved this sing for years.

  • This should be the national anthem

  • Some lad I know has a hole in his leg. He's lost one, about to leave the other behind. I don't want to worry anyone. It could have been me!

  • Great song

  • awsome song!

  • The intense pain of the lyrics juxtaposed with the playful tone of the music....brilliant.

  • True that, my Dad, being a very good man, just successfully walked away from an extended Vicadin addiciton. This song, which has long been a favorite of mine, makes me all the more proud of my father for being a great man who overcame such a difficult weakness.

  • im only 14 and i gotta say out of every artist in the world john bob dylan hendrix and bob marley are some of the greatest people to walk the earth!

  • This is my favorite song of John's.

  • This here is a classic, one of the best dang songs i've ever heard I say, that there herion is somethin else. Thanks jon prine you are a legend mister.

  • spanish pipedream

  • Hey, that's a good song

  • "simply classic tune"

  • sadest song

  • I love this song. It's sooo sad.

  • not one of his better songs

  • this is probably the most straightforward song about heroin use

  • A lot of soldiers, as John Prine’s song “Sam Stone” tells in a no holds barred way did not make it , one way or the other. Drugs, as in Stone’s case, medical problems, mental problems, Agent Orange or whatever other color might come up, you name it, the pathologies are all there. That is why I say I am always just a little bit more comfortable, despite any political or tactical disagreements, when I participate in anti-war actions with my fellow veterans. We know this story.

  • This is one of my favorite songs by him.. love it.

  • Thank you so much for posting this.

This is my father's favourite song. Heroin took the life of his best friend, and my dad was never the same afterwards. Somehow, there's nothing as beautiful as finding someone who can speak your deepest pain.

  • @parhhesia. Have you or you dad tried John Martyn?

  • @parhhesia Twas my fathers favorite song as well. I understand exactly what you mean my friend. My father passed 5 days ago, and it's amazing how something you just chalked up to being old music your parents liked can mean so much.

  • @zakkmylde2000 i love u and ur open mind

  • @parhhesia This is my Daddy's song. He came home from Vietnam and gave us all he had, but it wasn't all that he was. Our pain is the reality of his echo.

  • @parhhesia -sorry to hear that. Prayers!

  • @parhhesia The moan/droan in Prine's voice adds even more to this haunting song. Peace to your dad, and how wonderful for him his child can feel his sorrow.

  • Respond to this video... listened to song since 81 my son went to iraq he was there in 2003 he is somewhat like the song now never thought our son would be living the song but truly pray the last verse does no happen to him

  • Thomas more damian ? Donald and Lydia u mean

  • What's the chord at 1:01?

  • This song, along with "Hello In There" and his duet with Bonnie Rait on "Angel From Montgomery" are my favorite John Prine songs...along with "Grandpa Was a Carpenter" and "Illegal Smile"

  • dear abby, paradise, fish & whistle, sabu vists the twin cities alone, thats the way the world goes round, bruised orange,

  • As a little girl I grew up listening to John Prine on 8-track.Of course back then I had no idea what these lyrics meant but I loved John Prine then and I still love him now over 30 years later.

  • this song reminds me of my pops he was a vietnam vet and he died last october he struggled with addiction and when he was younger we use to listen to this song so thanks for uploading

  • could you post Unwed Fathers? thanks

  • My 20 year old son is recovering from an addiction to Oxycontin. I started to learn to play this song for him, but I can hardly play it without cryin', there is so much feeling in this song. Thank you John.

  • @onewayoutnine best to you and your son. opiates are such a double edged sword...I have heard that acupuncture can help with withdrawal. Don't forget to take care of yourself, too. Get a massage, go for walks, hug everybody.

  • What a sad and beautiful song

  • This song is heartbreaking

  • If you watch the video and listen these attack happened in Martial Arts Clubs and at Martial Arts Events..
