I read on a website that you should have a quarter to half an inch of play

you mean more tensioned? I am thinking of tensioning it again in a month time... Before removing the old one I marked the exact place where the tension (screw) was. It was the tension from the facory. So, once the belt is back at the "factory" level that I marked, I think it will be ok... thanks for your comment.
