Think of it as a prequel to Lord of the Rings. It covers how Bilbo found the One ring while on an adventure to steal a dragons treasure. The prequel to the Hobbit is the Silmarillian which is a long and painful read. That covers the creation of Elves and Men etc. as well as the creation of the rings themselves.
