I really enjoyed your video immensely. I agree, also, that of all the versions of "Caledonia" over the years, Eileen Laverty's version is the most pleasing to my Scot-Irish ears (born in America, though) BRIAN
@Irishborne@Scotty1137@trs123456789 the majority of scots genetics isnt irish or its ancestry...the old brythonic picts and the strathclyde cymric/welsh kingdoms....peebles is from the old welsh pebyll - so is kilmarnock and glasgow.......research it buddies
All I can say no mater your race background, this song is for everyone What you see in this song look into you past and heritage, And most especially your own homeland where ever that may be. Just love your past and be proud of who you are and where you come from. Everyone will be better for this and No One is better than anyone else we are all the same (born and bread scotsman)
mrsjustinbeibercrazy I totaly agree with you I was born in Scotland and am growing up here I love my home country it's georgous. personally I think the isle of cumbrae is the best if you haven't been there get your but here right now it's an amazing place and Millport 2010-2011 is a vid that proves it!!!
I first heard this song a few days ago at the local folk festival, and it's now one of the top 5 songs that gives me goosebumps whenever I listen to it.
As far as I know,I have no Scottish ancestry,and have never been to the bonnie land except when,in dreams ~ I knew how to fly. Yet,for some reason, my heart has been captured,and I long for her as I have longed for home. I love every verasion of this song including various renditions of Dougie's ....may God bless the fair land ♥
Nice vid and yes untill you hear Julie Fowlis singing I guess Ms Laverty will do!! btw Niam Leeson is IRISH LOL !! and POOR coverage of Robert Bruce, who knighted William Wallace and was actually responsible for the INDEPENDANCE of Scotland. The problem with The Wallace was he could not get the backing of the Scottish Landed Gentry who were looking after their own backsides!! If anyone is interested I can recommend Nigel Tranter's Bruce Trilogy and his The Wallace & t'would be goodbye Mel !!
I went to Edinburgh in 2009..... this was just a monster experience. The march up the Royal Mile was more then just a walk. It was just great. I will never forget this.
Apologies to all who rate this version but it is being sung without either passion or commitment. She has a 'nice' voice but thats all. compared to Frankie Millers version it is just boring and flat. Her voice is also quite pitchy === Randy Jackson
If any American with Scottish blood has ever been to Scotland, they will for sure return to it. It truly is the most amazing and beautiful place on earth.
@philgraham415 As a Scot I think it's fantastic that people from around the world, who have ancestors from Scotland, have never forgotten their routes. We must always be united in our love of freedom and for the ancient, windy, wee country... alba gu brath
@hamishsdad that warms my heart to hear, I was under the impression that Europeans don't see Americans as anything else but American and disavow any ancestral connections they have with their forefather's home countries.
@temperex I can't speak for all Europeans nor for all Scots for that matter, but I know there are many in Scotland who can appreciate both the importance of our ancestral ties and give genuine welcome those Americans who come to visit. However it is fair to say that Americans seem to put more emphasis on their routes than we do on our own and on those who left our shores. I think that's a pitty and I do my best to buck that trend!
This song is the pretty much my life story these past few months. My ancestors are from Scotland and I was able to vacation there this summer with my family and both my brother and I have been thinking about Scotland NONSTOP...especially Isle of Skye. I cannot get her out of my mind...My heart melts thinking of the blue lochs, the green glens, the warm people, and the stone castles.
we played this song at my mums funeral an had her flown back to ireland to be buried so this song has a lot of meaning for me. we used to always hear it in the house on the womans heart album when we were kids. amazing song
Does anyone else find it rather odd that Eileen "Laverty" is singing a "Scottish" song. Just tell me if I've gone crackers but I'm something of celt meself, what with being half Irish, half Scot. Before my father's clan-name was changed it was Bagge, that is until an ancestor of ours decided he wanted to be a priest, moved to rome and changed the nae to De Petris (of the Father) for religious connottion. My mother's maiden name happens to be Haughey, a good Irish surname.
@Irishborne While there is a power in a name, it all boils down to how YOU as a person feel. The name isn't all there is to a person, so I don't see why one should even care about it.
@Scotty1137 not all scots....many of the south of scotland used to speak a form of welsh known as strathclyde welsh/ cymbric......many towns like peebles kilmarnock and glasgow are of the "old welsh" and edin in edinburgh is from picitsh
@Irishborne nothing wrong in it you'll find people in Ireland like yourself of scottish descent and in scotland people with Irish surnames who are scots. Her family may be both or scots with an irish surname. My family are Kellys who are scots in our identity but have an Irish surname. Scots marry Irish and Irish marry Scots you'll find we're all probably mixed up with regards to that. Its never been clear cut the peoples of both islands are hardly homogeneous or pure bloodlines at that.
Ah, I do love this song. In my family there is huge controversy over whether we are all Irish or scottish as well...so far we have been able to tell that on both sides we have approximately half irish half scottish, though we aren't sure so I consider myself Scotch-Irish, but I mostly just say Irish. At any rate, aside from my ramblings I have a deep and profound love of both countries, people, and cultures, and this only helps to strengthen that for me.
@Irishborne Liked your comment , I, like you am Scottish by Irish consent or the other way about if one prefers. There are many similarities for both ethnic groups, consider the prefix " Mac or Mc" is very common in both Irish and Scottish names, also consider names like Mac Neil, Scottishaly and O Neil Irish. Of course you probably know this already

@segano1 I have to agree there, Scots are Pictish genetically, where as the Irish are "Gael",
Look at Brian Sykes ground breaking work, 12 years of research has confirmed that the Scots do indeed come from Picts.
A table was done showing that the nations can be broken down on what they are by majority with the following...
Scots = Picts
Irish = Gaels
Welsh = Brythons
English = Germanics
