Recalling how many times I spun this record and scratched it at the School Park james in the early 80's in the Bronx.... The Amazin Hell Raisin 2-40 crew from Monroe Avenue 4 eva!!! Shout out to Kid Cowboy, Kevie-O, Ike-U-Like, Jazzy Jeff, Money Mike, especially my main brotha D-Ha-Ron... miss making all those demo tapes on Saturdays in the summer...rest in peace..
Its not a gated reverb here. listen to 1:58. its a very simple filtered white noise with a decay mixed on top of the snare. you can hear the clean snare later on. the reverb is a shortish room reverb.
@highvoltaged Yeah, that's it thanks. I made something similar by creating a white noise snare with some processing, mainly EQ, and putting that on top of a snare from a break.
@highvoltaged I think so to..... And Id almost put money on that they were using an eventide harmonizer for the super-short delay, pitched side to side to give it that even more of that "smack" effect....almost like Charlie's "Spacer Woman"...check it.
Kids every Tru Hip hOp artists and fan knows this break. MCs have been using everything from the beat to the guitar riffs since the 80's- Example... Special Ed used the chorus on his first album and Organized Confusion used the breakdown. My point is- just like the "Funky Drummer" no point to try and figure out who used this break- it has been and will continue to be used by every producer in the game- that's why it' goes down in Break And Cratediggin' history.
Bump the sample. Give props to vocalist Alyson Williams, who went on to have her own solo R&B career in the late 80s and 90s and was a leading Def Jam background singer (see Oran Juice Jones' and Chuck Stanley's work)
Drew1914, it's also been sampled in a lot of drum'n'bass tunes from 2000 onwards, for example Roni Size, and a few others. Its mainly the heavy kick and that immense snare they sampled tho
classic tune-------- sampled also by a german hip hop group called "die fantastischen 4" on their first album "jetzt gehts ab"--- Thx for posting it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone know how they got the snare to sound like this? apart from the reverb of course.
shogeist 2 years ago
Its not reverb. Its called "Gated reverb". Phil Colins used the Lexicon reverb effect box at over £2000 a shot back in the 80's.
Everybody else used cheaper versions until eventually the sound sounded just right Lo- Fi style.
allroundpower 2 years ago
@allroundpower and shogeist.
I'm not too sure if this is a gated reverb. It sure is a heavy plate reverb, just like in old Schooly D songs.
If u wanna do gated reverbs on ur DAW u have to use a sidechained gate to trigger the reverb. Nice effect for sure, if it fits that is.

The sample is used during the whole song in We Major from begining to end. the beat pattern is exactly the same as this just slowed down a little.

Its the inspiration behind run dmc sucker mcs which was directed at melle mel
melle mel responded to sucker mcs on step off with the line " if i got to be a sucker suck on this "
I never liked this song i thought it was too new to be featured on a ultimate breaks & beat album.
