  • thumbs up dude, you just solved my index gear shifting problem

  • Thanks for this video, very simple explanation, I now need to put this for a test!

  • Thanks a Lot! I bought a bike to ride with my son and this adjustment looked really complicated for me, and I didn't know where to start with. You made my day today, thanks again.

  • Very helpful clip. My sons gears are now sorted. Many thanks.

  • He can "Uhhhh" as many times as he wants to, I really don't mind, Brill video.

  • wow! that helped me too much. The 6th and 7th gear of my bicycle was not adjusting but after watching this video my bicycle is alright. thanks !!!!!!!!!

  • I have a mountain bike and I am adjusting my gears, and I have no problem going from the smallest sprocket to the biggest I am having trouble going back down from the biggest to the smallest, I hear rattling an clanking when attempting to go back down what do I need to do?

  • Excellent video! Helped me out a lot!

  • thats very good thanks for posting

  • Classic way of explaining by covering every aspect, every detail.

    Well done.

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWW this guys really helps thumbs wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy up

  • Hello there! People im way better my nan could do better but still ok

  • very helpful!

  • what about the B-tension screw?

  • nice pants.

  • Thanks--very helpful.

  • 240 hurts my EYES

  • nice video,, something new i learn today

  • thanks i learn something new today!

  • Thank you for that, it appears relatively simple, at first time attempt.

  • he forgot to mention about the screw contact where it meets the derailleur hanger.

  • Thanks for that, helped me out a great deal.

  • eff brakes, he uses his hands!

  • do both the gears need to be on the top setting ???

  • Well done, best explanation I've seen.

  • Perfectly done.

  • truly heroic!

  • thanks for this guide ^_^

  • What model Isaac is that?

  • Nobody mentioned...anti-clockwise, rather than counter clockwise....I said Clock!

  • BIG HELP MY GEAR KEPT SKIPPING AND ILL MESS WITH THE WIRE NEVER HELP BUT THIS VIDEO THANK LEONARDMLEE MY HERO

  • Lol. Why don't you use a real Phillips bit screw driver instead of using the wrong one and damaging the screw heads!!!

  • Every girl I know makes fun of me and calls me a grease monkey all because I'm a girl and I like to work on bikes or cars in my free time. Oh well, I gess that's what makes me stand out a bit. Anyway, very good video it helped me out a bit.

  • Brilliant! I can now adjust the gears in less time than it takes to watch the video. Being in the middle of nowhere it's great to be able to fine tune and replace parts myself.

  • when i try to change from 6 to other gears, it doesnt go upper, the shifter drags the cable and the cable drags the derailleur but it only drags vertically, it doesnt drag to the otehr gear, idk why. When i move the derailleur to the first gear by my hand, it moves and it changed to 2,3,4,5 and 6, but i cant go back to the 5,4,3,2,1, because the derailleur only moves vertically, but not to the other gear.

Oh and btw when i tighten the cable a bit more, the gear changes but only to the 1 one :/

  • @valentass88 have you followed the steps in this video to the letter? If the angle of the derailleur is not changing then you may have to make an adjustment to the screw that controls the derailleur angle adjustment.

Probably best to take it to your local bike shop if you don't know what you're doing. Shouldn't cost more than £10-£15 to fix.

  • @Dhanabanana82 i almost fixed that, only have to adjust gears properly

  • Brilliant.. thanks... now to get a stand!!!

  • Very simple really. Now all I need is one of those stands...

  • great demonstration, thanx!

  • Can you change a 18 speed mtb into a higher speed y changing a casette on the back wheel?

  • Very good vid, one little gripe - He says to start with the barrel adjuster fully clockwise, that will only give adjustability in one direction! So if doing that I think make sure you start with the cable slack, then youll only need to tighten it the cable by turning barrel anticlockwise. Otherwise start with the barrel nearer the middle so you can adjust both ways.

  • Amazing Tony \m/

  • 2:26 NOTE TO SELF: Top screw--highest gear bottom--lowest gear

  • This is a very lucid demonstration of an otherwise confusing procedure. The Shimano manual for the RD-6600 is virtually unintelligible. Good show Leonard! Maybe you will consider doing one for the front derailleur (or "mech" as you Brits seem to say).

  • This is a very lucid demonstration of an otherwise confusing procedure. The Shimano manual for the RD-6600 is virtually unintelligible. Good show Leonard!

  • Thanks, just what I needed

  • Brilliant.

  • Good video, but I cant believe he is using the wrong screwdriver to adjust the stops, the pozidrive is not only the wrong driver its also the wrong size which is why it doesnt fit!

  • Brilliant, thank you so very much- worked like a charm after I spent hours by myself trying to get my Shimano to function properly.

  • Thanks for the video.

  • thanks alot. I thought my bike was broke until i saw this.

  • well after my latest ride the rear cable snapped with 30 km to go !!!! hopefully this will help ta

  • Excellent video, but what happens when the no-load indexing is fine, but when I stand to climb the gears start chattering?

I have a carbon fiber fram with dura ace components.

  • No American Ummms but plenty of British Ahhhs.

    Good video. Thanks.

  • excellent video. My front gears have been giving me gip and I'm guessing the song is pretty much the same for them too

  • Very well done. Professional. Watch more pros at the Bikeskills Channel. Subscribing enters you to win FREE gear!

  • Excellently done and explained. First time of owning a advance shifting bike and Had some clicking after putting a new tube in and this helped me reset it back to where it was when I bought the bike. Thank You.

  • very good info , thanks

  • Clear and simple. Nicely done. Thx.

  • Thanks' very well explained!

  • I counted 38 short aahhs...

  • I am very happy you made this video. Thank you.

  • Thank you sooo much. I was having a bad run until i saw video. Now riding with nifty no noise gear changes :-)

  • clean job, clean shirt

  • Thanks!

  • Much easier technique than what is found in the Shimano techdocs. Thanks.

  • Awesome, I'm not sure if I'm more impressed that he is in street clothes (I got greasy just watching) or that he said 'leever' and 'anti-clockwise'...:)

  • Superb, clear and simple, many thanks

  • i want to be your friend !! thanks :D

  • Great explanation...thanx

  • but what if it doesn't change gears under no load! :(

  • that's why it's called "English" duh...

  • Chippy tea

  • thank you, great explanation!

  • thanks so much, sorted my problem :) well, could you maybe do a tutorial on how to adjust the chain tension and sort out the other gears please? the ones at thee cranks

  • you're the man, maaaaan ... nice job and very good explaining. 10x

  • that saved my bike (and patience!) well done for showing me what how to set up the gears from scratch. thanks

  • Great demo. It would be better if the video is in a higher resolution.

  • Great video

  • Excellent demo, thank you!

  • Thanks! u saved me some bucks there

  • Perfect!

  • Thanks for the great explanation! Gears are working correctly now.

  • great info! thanks!

  • my gears are making a lot of noise;/ cant get them right :(((((((((((((((( tried all steps from the video;P

  • @ofcaa12 You might have a worn freewheel/cassette/chain. The bearings may have come loose in the rear sprockets, or play in any of the drivetrain.

  • Thank you! Never had to adjust the freakin` thing up until it started skipping out three gears down from it`s intended position and being noisy and rackety all the time.

  • That was brilliant .......that simplest way anyone can explain

  • Some very minor additions: a visual demonstration of the rear derailleur movement from high gear to low gear without the cable, showing the "b" screw derailleur adjustment and explaining it, backing out the cable adjustment screw one turn from fully tightened to give some flexibility to loosen the cable if necessary, check the cable housing fitment in the frame before tightening the cable on the rear derailleur. This RD video is the best one on YouTube and has been the best one for FOUR years.

  • Excellent video on rear derailleur adjustment. In my opinion the best one on YouTube as of today - a certainly four years and still running.... I would change only a few minor things, but even so it is still the best.

  • @RobertShay What would you change?

  • great video. thank you so much

  • Best one on youtube, thanks guys!!!

  • Good

  • Thank you!

  • In my opinion this is the best video on adjusting the rear derailleur on YouTube. Many thanks!

  • Great advice i shall go and sort out my BMX now!!!

  • The best explanation I've watch! I'm portuguese and not even videos in portuguese language was better than this one! You made it simple, that's how it should be.

Thank you, keep the good job.

  • And thank you for watching "Anglofile Bicycle Repair Man" Tune in next week when we use a spanner to rescue our Ipswitch holiday.

  • And thank you for watching "Anglofile bicycle repain man" tune in next week when we use a spanner to rescue our Ipswitch holiday.

  • Beautiful!!! Helped me in my work! Thank u loads for this helpful guide!

  • He is not saying "uhhhhh" he is breathing (normal stuff) , stop hating. This is the best explanation I've seen so far.

  • such a soothing voice :) Thank you very much this helped me out loads!

  • thank god for YT, I've just replaced my rear gear cable and have been buggering around with the adjustment screws for half an hour to try to stop that bloody clicking noise!

  • Very informative

  • Very clear and detailed explanation of the subject! Thanks for helping to make my gears work smoothly again!

  • Tony, thanks, that was very clear.

    Great stuff. John

  • Thanks man u rely helped me out!

  • Spelt bastardised with a Z there!

  • Very well communicated; the Brits always have a much better command of the English language. No redundancy, no "uumms", no jargon, just straight and proper vocabulary to get the message accross.

  • @jnielsen65

No they say ' uhhhhh" instead. same shit. lol

  • @jnielsen65

he said "uhhhh" multiple times. what are you talking about.

  • @jnielsen65 Seriously? He said "uh" like ten times in the first minute of the video.

  • @jnielsen65 the bloke says uhhhh, so, ok, well, etc.... many times, and there is plenty of jargon. He does a fine job, but I call bullshit on your "Brits always have a much better command of the English language" statement.

  • @jnielsen65 ROFL

  • @jnielsen65 Instead of "uumms" I hear a whole lotta "uuhhs" what a vast improvement.

  • @jnielsen65 You need to listen again. He says, and ahhh, uhh, many times.

  • @jnielsen65

... except that he keeps saying 'further' instead of 'farther'. Other than that, pretty good command of the Queen's English. And not a bad demo to boot! Thumbs up!

  • @jnielsen65 heard a lot of "aaas"

  • @jnielsen65 youe never been to liverpool then :D

  • @jnielsen65 Your comment amounts to trolling. I guess "the Brits" have a preference for "ah" as their favorite filler. If you actually listened to the video you'd notice that it is littered everywhere along with "uumms." Maybe you should have another listen before you post something stupid like that. He also often uses "mkay" as a tag.

Second, the video is full of bike jargon! What makes this video's presenter's vocabulary straight and proper and how does this relate to British speech?

  • @jnielsen65 I counted no less than thirty "ahhs," "ums," and unnecessary "OKs" as well as a few redundancies. Add in the ones that I missed and just because someone has an accent does NOT mean they are more educated. It's human nature, and some people are better at suppressing this than others, and it has absolutely NO bearing on their education or intelligence.

That said, it was an informative video, and filler words aside, this guy appears to know his stuff.

  • i counted 9 "uhs" in the first minute.

  • @jnielsen65 what about all the "uhhh's" hes saying? idiot

  • @jnielsen65 what about all the "uhhh's" he's saying? idiot

  • @jnielsen65 i agree... but just watch the first minute, where he says 'uh' before almost every sentence.

however, i agree the vocabulary is far superior and thus sounds not only more intelligent but is able to convey a higher level of clarity.

  • @jnielsen65 He said "Uhhhh" 9 times within the first minute of the video.

  • @jnielsen65 yanks say arrrrmm, not urrrmm

  • @jnielsen65 Yeah, instead of "umms" Brit's use "aah" Much better command indeed.

  • @jnielsen65 I can count four or five "uhhhhh"s within the first minute. Not really sure what you're talking about.

  • @jnielsen65 yeah I definitely count several "uhhhhhs" in the first minute. Good call though......

  • MAGIC! this is drive me crazy.. thanks for the video!

  • will this process works on a campagnolo rear derailleur 10 or 11 speed ?

  • brilliant. thanks will save me a lot of 'cranky' riding

  • Thanks a lot, this is a great demo, I followed this simple explanation and finally have gearing that works perfectly, much better than the setup the bike shop had charged me to do.

  • 5 star explanation

    Thank you

  • so simply explained, brilliant

  • Gravity plays a part in shifting derailleurs (just by the weight of the chain). So, I have always been told to adjust the derailleur with the bicycle leveled.

Your demonstration is not all that tragic anyways, it is good indeed, but we know that it can't be performed on an upside-down bike. Then, what is the critical angle?

  • Thank you. Perfect instructions. You get Superkarma for helping all of us.

  • Thank you for this video I spent 130.00 at the bike shop rode for a while and noticed the gear were not in syc took it back and was told I had to leave it for a 15.00 adjustment, How about No....Thank you for the video

  • you should use a Philips that fits the adjuster screws i see your stripping it. To that note, all screws are hex with the exception of the Derailleur adjusters...here is an idea Shimano...Change it!

  • Thank you very much saved me a trip to the bike shop. Thanks you tube as well

  • is it possible to order you home for fixing my bike? i live in sweden ^^

  • cheers mate good video, helps clear up a few thing a overcrowded so called bike mechanic class cant

  • good tutorial. thank you.

  • hi toni your tutorial on adjusting the rear derailleur should the chain be on the big or small chainring front or doesnt it matter. Thankyou, Regards Frank Kay

  • @franwsh09 I would presume it doesn't matter. but worth checking.

  • @franwsh09 : Use the middle chainring to adjust your derailleur. That will do since this is the only chainring that works for all sprockets.
