I think this could be the best of female duets ever. Truly spirited, engaging, and entertaining. What it must have been like to see this live... Thanks for posting.
No wonder that rumor spread for so many years that Dinah had one black parent. She had that magical bell-like voice. She's just a musical southern girl who grew up singing gospel and jazz. Perfect pairing with Ella. No wonder they loved singing together so much.
@MrMusicProphet Who cares about one black parent, what a load of horse shit. You are the rumor, you are the one that brought all of us here. So you need to be black to have the magic, not a magical voice....
@yusoupoff So Yusoupoff, are you normally that defensive? You should really read the whole comment before you respond so harshly. I was merely referring to ignorant northerners of the 1940s and 50s who spread the rumor. They didn't realize that anyone who grew up in Nashville singing gospel in churches would have a special something in their voice. They used to say the same thing about Elvis. I was a Dinah and Ella fan since before you were born so calm down kid.
@MrMusicProphet My apologies. I haven't a clue of what you're speaking of. I didn't make a comment on this video. That isn't me who made the rude remark 23 hours ago. Sorry
dinah was from memphis, so she probably grew up hearing the blues. it looks like she was just having a ball here, she was getting to sing with someone she really admired, and was getting to wail.
i know there were rumors about dinah shore's ancestry. i think they were just that, rumors. it doesn't really matter, but i think part of it, was she was willing to sing with black artists, in an era when it just wasn't done. sinatra did too, but people weren't gonna threaten him. and back then it was a big deal, look at carol channing. she waited until she was in her 80's to tell everyone that she was passing for white.
This a perfect example of the difference between being an Entertainer and being just a Performer. These Women are Entertainers and lady gaga is just a lame performer. These Women's careers started in honkie tonks,Big Bands on the road, stage, radio, and Night Clubs with Live audience and anything can happen. At this point in their lives ella and dinah had crafted and refine every part of their acts. Something you can't not do on Youtube.
Wow. Can't believe how amazing their voices mesh together.. And what's up with their ridiculous ability to be so flawless over a whole 6 minutes of non-stop incredibleness??
What a standard they set for their day.
Really the best we'll ever see for a very long time.
This is q\uite excellent...their harmonies are flawless, the music arrangement is tops, with the key and tempo changes.. Two talented women that really seemed to enjoy singing together.
Ella the Queen of Jazz singing with a relaxed and classy Dinah Shore. No tickets bought will bring them back.Miss the Dinah show.We can still listen..Thanks for posting!
@MrPistolMason-not one artist! Few can attempt, but these two were the Real Thing ("like butter"). Neither are there songs of this caliber today. Everything today is sequenced and programmed-Gone are the full bands/orchestras also.
@1curbfeeler You took the words right out of my lips . . . the ladies had talent, and some to spare. Can you think of anyone today that can pull this off, no cut-aways. I can't.
The first two songs are by W.C. Handy -- "Memphis Blues" and then "St. Louis Blues." Not sure about the rest. A lot of blues songs use the same lyrics (e.g. "sleeps in the kitchen with his feet in the hall"), so it's hard to know.
I also wouldn't be surprised if (after "St. Louis Blues") Ella and Dinah are weaving together several snippets of semi-obscure tunes or even made up their own bluesy melodies using a host of "classic" blues lyrics.
@phmike69 I agree. Not to mention I follow the men's wear styles of these best dressed stars from that era, such as Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Sean Connery as James Bond.
@robertgalbreath1 My Bad. absolutely correct "gokinsmen". the first song is in fact "Memphis Blues" and then segued into "St Louis Blues". There is a song called "Blues in the Night" to which the arranger seems to give a nod, but it's not exactly the melody. Anyhoo, what a FABULOUS vid!
I enjoyed the Dinah Shore show as a kid. I really appreciate the fact that Ms. Shore never looked down on comments made early in her career about being black; a revelation (if proven true), could have obviously limited her career considerably. However, I do believe that there is some truth to the rumor just judging from her early photos. RIP Ms. Shore.
@shannonD68 Dinah was a Jewish girl from Tennessee-- yes, there are Jewish families there, and in every state. Although her coloring was quite fair, her features seemed just slightly Afrocentric, which spurred those rumors. I also heard them plenty of times, always in a cruel way. To my knowledge, she never directly addressed those rumors, but there's no way she wasn't keenly aware of them. But Dinah wasn't above doing some false public relations of her own, the Burt Reynolds romance.
This is still the greatest. The vocals are wonderful and watching the interaction between the two really makes it out-of-this-world! The two truly seem to enjoy each other. Dinah seems to almost "feed" of Ella's talent and really belts out. Much fun to watch!
Now this is true talent this crap today is HORRIBLE. Listen to that sweet LIVE harmony I love singing the bottom right along with this video . Sounds so good. May they both rest in peace. I hope that music comes back to life, and away from the looks. True talent is sprinkled hidden all over america. They probably practiced once lol. Great Vid. Thanks for the post.
they were able to have variety shows back then because there were real talents out there. today we have music videos in which we can detect the talent of the film editor but certainly not of the performer, and we have reality shows, in which talent, good taste or anything remotely engaging are all in short supply.
That's a different episode. I have the episode you've referenced here and while Ella and Dinah do a wonderful duet, it's not this one. Ella was on Dinah's show many times, at least half-a-dozen or more. I don't know when this paricular duet aired. I found it on the "MWAH! Really complicated arrangement by my lights - goes on forever at top speed. They're both snapping and swingin' and sweating buckets toward the end - WHOA DAMN I just caught the big finish. Jesus. I need a cigarette after that.
Ladies and gentlemen this is what actual woman sound like who have a talent to sing the notes right out of a song! There is not a singer today who could come close to this stunning performance!
@himycatsdead That's true, even Rhiana cannot perform this way because all that Rhiana does is strip for the camera to sell junk. Rhiana needs to learn more from these distinguished lades on this video or else get out of the music business.
This is unbelieveable. It doesn't get much better than this folks. Two amazing voices and talents, the likes of which we'll never see again...at least performances like this survive.
She was a very accomplished singer during the war years through the early 60's. You might be confusing her later career when she was primarily a TV talk show host. Her vocal skills were diminished in those later years partly due to the fact that she no longer sang professionally and regularly.
That's a good point about her talk show years. One of the musicians from the talk show days, I forget his name, but not John Rodby, who was her musical director, said she was often at a disadvantage because she'd always sing new material but didn't have enough rehearsal. Why she did this, I can't say. She certainly had the clout to demand more rehearsald. Maybe she felt she didn't need it or didn't want to spend anymore time on it.
Dinah's TV program was live. Done every week. Not like today's TV.
I was a kid when her program ran. Television was never better. The Dinah Shore Show was the one night every week when I could see fabulous acts like this.
As far as I'm concerned Dinah Shore is a national treasure.
2 singers of today as great as Dinah Shore and Ella Fitzgerald, Amy Winehouse and Lada Gaga (kidding). However, there are some excellent singers around today. Dinah and Sarah Vaughan were two of my favorites. In my opinion, Judith Durham and Linda Rondstadt are as good. They are both very versatile and sing like angels.
I can't get over how well their voices blend. it isn't often two powerhouse voices blend with one not overpowering the other. one of the best duets i've heard in a while. legendary
YES! I hope this video doesn't get removed from YouTube again. I watched this clip posted by another viewer almost daily, I loved it so much. Still remember all the lyrics! Anyone know if this clip and others from the Dinah Shore show can be found on DVD?
They aren't available on DVD, but there is a VHS tape available called "MWAH! The Best of The Dinah Shore Show" which is usually available on eBay. It was broadcast by PBS in 2003. I'm the one who posted them originally. They closed my account and my 150 Dinah clips!
Both their voices are amazing and so soothing, thanks for uploading :)
