  • What is this shit? lbr, Drew should be bowing to Ted Neeley.

  • Playing JC is a lot more than a scream. Ted Neely is still the best JC.

  • ted neely bring his unique style to it, Drew Sarich does too, both are spectacular voices on different levels, but in my opinion, it takes a lot more to do jesus than a spectacular voice, you need to be sincere, humble and caring, you have to give off an essence that not all have... Drew gives off a powerful Jesus performance, but Ted Neely was a better Jesus (the man behind the legend) i have played jesus in this musical, and it is extremely difficult so kudos to both , they became Jesus.

  • Good but I still prefer Ted Neeley or Steve Balsamo in that order

  • Beautiful Wonderful rearrangement. Little scremo i didnt like but nun the less AMAZING! and it was live.

  • hell yeh!!!! best version i have heard!!! outstanding!!!!

  • I've tried to sing this version of Gethsemane, please judge me...:)) Thx..

    youtube.com/watch?v=LYAtcSrjOZs

  • This is awesome, great singing and guitar.

  • this is awesome but my favorite performance is Steve Balsamo in Ahoy, Holland in 04. Its in the list next to the vid. Epic.

  • wonderful <3

  • ya know he is anAMAZING singer but he is way too angry here and there is too much guitar. makes it like a metal concert rather than an emotional piece of theatre

  • @cpjc08

IT'S AN EMOTIONAL PIECE OF METAL!!!!! YEAHHH

my absolute favorite musical, for every reason.

  • @cpjc08 JCS is a rock opera so the guitar is definately allowed.

  • @cpjc08

the whole presumption of the song is that jesus was angry about his fate....so I think everything fits perfectly

  • @cpjc08 1. he is angry because he has been told he has to die. 2.its a rock opera guitar is allowed:) 3.this peice and this guys performance are incredibly emotional.

just my opinion on the matter. equally as valluable as urs

  • I love how manly Drew portrays Jesus in the song. It makes Jesus' fears all the more powerful.

  • Maybe the most touching version I've heard since Neeley's and Balsamo's. No doubt stands the comparison with the greatest specialists of this amazing piece...

  • sure can sing, but screams too much.

  • Can we not discuss religious beliefs on this video? Let's discuss the actual merits of the video...

  • I love this so, so much.

  • LITTLE too angry, much better suited as Judas!

  • This is.. Simply awe inspiring.

  • there are some parts that i thought were too angry...mainly the "I'd have to know my lord" just before the scream. other than that this is amazing.

  • @Orfius1122 Well if you really think about it, any human being asked/told to die for seemingly no reason is going to be pretty angry. So "too angry" in said situation isn't exactly possible.

  • @Orfius1122 yeah man how mad would you be if you had to die to prove something that nobody believed? thats some serious passion in that performance he's a beast!

  • I agree that a voice likes this really portrays the "human side" of Jesus... but Jesus was human AND divine. This version is far too angry, I cant believe that he would throw a tantrum like this to the lord his god and father, even according to the script itself not just the bible.

  • If a Jesus would have such a voice, i would be a catolic.

  • @Soahi Catholic?

  • @xKaraAnnJx forgive my english :D

  • Not bad, not bad at all, but he tries way too hard to be different and, thus, incorporates too many gimmicks, especially when it comes to the timing.

I'm a very open-minded person and I'm all for making a song your own and doing something new instead of imitating someone else's version. But this song has to come from the heart and from the Jesus characters, not from the brain or from wanting to show how versatile a singer one is.

  • I think this is the best rendition because the fact that JCS is a rock musical instead of Renaissance counterpoint portrays him as Jesus the human being who's not immune to getting angry or tired. Drew Sarich uses his stellar rock vocals and excellent musicianship to communicate the human side. Sometimes people portray Jesus as very divine and sing everything as crisply as possible, but it doesn't fit the music. I hope that made sense.

  • @Cronana It's not about how edgy the song is sung. Of course it's good to sing the song with a rock edge, I love that even. But this guy takes too many liberties with the song itself, the balance switches too much to his vocal gymnastics instead of the feeling and message the song wants to convey.

  • Po prostu chwyta za serce....

  • This is just too awesome

  • At first few listens, I thought Drew was good, but in the wrong role. I love his singing; and I loved the fire in his Judas. But his playing Jesus has grown on me. I think there's something superbly human in this Jesus - how his voice varies, from angry, desperate to pleading to just...resigned. I think one thing most of us have forgotten is that this a rock opera - and Drew reminds us of that. He reinvented the role, and pushed its boundatries. God, he's epic.

  • Hmm. I really love his singing, but I can't help feeling he's too passionate for Jesus. I absolutely *loved* him as Judas. Went through crying and squeeing and all - his Judas was pragmatic, acerbic, and passionate at the same time. I'm not sure if that kind of passion works for Jesus though. But his singing alone is worshippable.

  • Drew has an amazing vocal instrument but I much prefer his interpretation of Judas. His Jesus is just too whiney and he takes too many liberties with the melody. Still, you have to appreciate the energy and the sheer vocal acrobatics.

  • this is good but

    freek bartels is better

  • @biesgies Definitley NOT! XD

  • I love how he changes and moulds everything he does to be just how he wants it, it's so original, regardless of whether you think he fits it or not, he is a very gifted man.

  • I don't think there is such a thing as overacting on a biblical scale.

  • He's good, but not the best. Hes more suited for Judas, because I don't see Jesus screaming at all.

  • Man, when Drew goes full distorted, it sounds awkward. I don't know if he is trained for that or what but it sounds like hurts. Sounds really throaty.

Oh, on topic, I totally agree. His Judas is absolutely phenomenal.

  • STEVE BALSAMO FOREVER!!

  • i love michael balls version but this is really different.. but i like it

  • oh my goddd! he is acctually amazingggg <3

  • Wow. Beautifully done.

    Master vocalist at his best!

  • wow...he is really freakin' good, possibly better than Ted Neeley, close though....

  • I will always stay faithful to Ted Neeley as my favorite Jesus ... but Drew Sarich is cutting it very, very close.

(I saw him on Broadway in 'Les Mis' without even knowing how talented he was before!)

  • I agree. Drew is totally AWESOME, but I prefer him performing the Judas character. Steve Balsamo has a sweeter voice

  • God. God god. Drew is probably the best Jesus I've ever heard. He's perfectly type-casted in this role. I usually think Drew's style is too much for most roles, but he's perfect for rock opera.

  • brilliant.

  • Thank you!!! This just might be the best Gethsemane I've heard. And I've heard quite a few....

  • Sorry I misspelled Rob's name it's Rob Folwer or something well, I'll just say Rob.

  • it's Rob Fowler

  • Thank you so much may you live a long healthy life.

  • I think Drew Sirach and Rob Flower as Pilate were the best actors in this play.

  • i love drew =D, hope one day i'll be singing like that

  • Great! Ted and Ian are the best but this guy rocks! We all need the high pitch for this music, I know you wait for it in every singer, don´t fuck yourself round it, it's very important, and it's the mark of the music. Just don´t like the hispanic-learned- english-by-listening-to-americans accent.

  • Um. Drew IS an american :)

  • yeah... just a little american...

    hes shamelessly broadway, but incredible

  • He was good, can't argue that.

  • hes alriteee

    he screams abit though

    but then still amazinnnnn :)

  • wow! he's so incredibly amazingly amazing! Espeshi in Les Miz!

  • Comment removed

  • Drew can sing, but prefer his contempory stuff. Just him with a guitar is good. I agree he sings with no emotion at all, just wants to belt it out, who does he think he is Gillan, the master of the rock version. For me, Balsamo surpasses all others as the total package. Emotional, sincere, strong, captivating, for me he owns the stage . Neeley is the film legend, but still lacks the emotion, but he did what Webber/Rice expected in the film. Balsamo so versatile, check out his other stuff.

  • Unfortunately almost everyone saw Glenn Carter version. I cannot imagine why you think he is the best. His Jesus is whiny and self-centered. And Carter's voice is weak and unpleasant. Sorry, but you have to face the truth :)

  • You can't imagine? I wrote it out. I feel his singing was acted out excellently that his voice has gorgeous low and mid tones. You have your opinion but please save the lecture on facing the truth. I wrote to watch his because I wanted to share something I thought was great - It's ok with me if you don't agree...apparently it's not ok with you if I don't agree with you. Face your own. I'm doing fine.

  • Ok, now I feel bad. Sorry.

But I would really like to know which part of Carter's acting you find excellent? Because what I see in this movie instead of Jesus is a weak person who has a childish pout on his face all the time and very often looks like he's going to cry like a woman.

  • As for his Broadway performance - he yells and whines, does a lot of hand gesturing, overacting in general (same goes for Tony Vincent) and he's just not Jesus.

All of this is, of course, just my personal opinion, and I'm prepared to change it if you could point out for me where Carter's acting is so perfect.

    Sorry for my English :)

  • Almost ALL the Jesus's I've seen don't THOROUGHLY ACT intentions/feelings of Christ. A great voice without acting the words won't grip the hearts of the audience as it could. Glenn's emotions were from his heart&soul, through his body/eyes. It's undeniable that his character suffered, was angry, very scared and HUMAN. Maybe it's uncomfortable for you to see a man so honestly emotional. If DREW (EXCELLENT ACTOR with a great voice)wasJudas with Glenn that would've be perfection.

    Best to you ~J

  • I agree wholeheartedly with Silivren. Glenn's voice is incredibly weak and I'm surprised he was cast, given this song's dynamics. His phrasing is so literal and on the beat, it's very unimaginative.

The 'emotion' he puts in is also poor, in my opinion. I find most of his little outbursts funny, and not in a good "laughing WITH you" way.

Drew, on the other hand, is very creative and has a powerful voice. His acting seems very good, too. But it's his creativity and voice I love the most.

  • I personally saw no emotion in his acting and heard no emotion in his voice in the movie. Sorry, I have to agree with the others.

  • @Silivren Tony vincent is actually very good u can do better then can ?

  • @aliciah10 Tony Vincent is an excellent singer, but he can't act for his life.

    I'm good at what I do :)

  • I agree that Drew tends to scream a bit too much :) But this is actually a concert version of JCS that was made slightly more "rock" than usual :)

As for Webber I don't think any of us can guess what he thinks but I can well imagine that he'd like this performance as well any other. Because if you don't like something it doesn't automatically mean that it's "horrific" :)

  • yeah thanks for agreeing. I'm sorry for the capital letters haha. Yeah, when i said horrific, it was just my view of it. I can understand why people would like his voice, but really, everything i just said is only my opinion.

  • Very good actually! Really good singer, but not the best I've seen. But he should play judas!

  • Drew Sarich seens to me a better actor than singer... wicht is great for this song... I've seen pavaroti-like singers with ten times less emotion than Drew...

  • I think he is amazing both as Jesus and Judas but I personally think his Judas is better.....plus I can say he's sexy as Judas and not get struck down by Jesus! LOL

  • He does get screamo at some parts, but that just makes it all the more intense.

...I feel really slimy 'cause I think he's sexy, and... he's playing JESUS. *goes off to confession*

  • Get thee to a nunnery!!!

  • lol!! nice

  • Explain what you mean

  • wrong

  • he has a strange accent in his voice is he american??? something like not men meaaaan

  • He is an American. From St. Louis.

  • I love this guy, anything's better than Sebastian Bach!

  • I like him so much more as Judas than as Jesus. His voice just seems a lot more suited to that role. Eh. x3 Ian Gillan and Steve Balsamo are my definitive favorites.

  • eh i'll take Balsamo any day over this screaming. i get the interpertation but I personally prefer Balsamo.

  • hahaha wow...this is kinda screamo sounding at some points. very interesting. neeley and balsamo are still my favorites, but i have to give this guy some credit for adding something new to it :)

  • This is amazing

  • drew transcends so much...but i really do like him better as judas, just because its such a more compelling role....

  • so much better than Colm, in my eyes Colm Wilkinson is the best Jean Val Jean, but Drew Sarich is the superior in this song.

  • Drew is unbelievable! Please check out the video of Kurt Bowen's performance of this song. He is not a rock singer like Drew, but he shocked a lot of people with his portrayal of Jesus...INCREDIBLE!

  • i'll be performing drew's version of this song for my musical cabaret this coming november. i'll have someone reocrd it and see if i do drew proud. wish me luck!

  • how the fuck can anyone sing like that?????

    jesus

    incredible

  • lmao jesus is correct.

  • Ted Neeley and Steve Balsamo will always be the best in my eyes, but I always get a smile on my face when someone does this song justice. Clearly he is a very talanted singer, just not my number one ^^ I give it a 4!

  • I NEED this audio!!! where/how can I get it?? I've looked online and couldn't find anything, then I had to resort to looking on limewire, and still haven't found anything... any advice as to how I could hunt this down??

  • u get it on itunes. Its a german production i guess from Vienna. Theres nearly the whole opera w/ Drew. Much fun

  • Pop?....obv. not a music person.....

  • He would be the best Judas ever =P

  • Lol, never mind, in the next clip he was Judas :DD I'll listen to that now :D

  • That's of course your opinion, but I say that no one can beat Carl Anderson, the original Judus.

  • Anderson, though wonderful, was not the original Judas. Murray Head and Ben Vereen (from the original concept recording, and original Broadway cast) have that distinction. Head is tied with Anderson for second in my personal Judas Countdown List -- with Drew Sarich #1.

  • Carl Anderson wasnt the original lol. Murray Head was. Nice try though.

  • best version ever

  • @jeenzz

Good vocal by a very good singer but STEVE BALSAMO is the best for this song. No one can bit him on this. Check it out in Youtube for: “Steve Balsamo - Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar - Ahoy, Holland - June 2004”

  • He'd be good at screamo. lol He's amazing! His emotions pour out into each song he sings.

  • UNBELIEVABLE

  • AMAZING! FINALLY a possible hei to the mighty Neely. i think if you cant hit the notes in this tune then dont even bother. sure, you can still do it with emotion without the high notes. but come on, anyone who LOVES this song looks forward to those parts.

  • DREW SARICH is Amazing!!!! i would love to see him sing live!!!!

  • you should hes unbelievable

    especially in les mis

  • wow

  • I don't like drew's version at all.He is screaming a lot and that such a shame because his voice is so beautiful. I love him in the role of judus and everything else that he sings. Steve Balsamo is the best singer for this song, i think.

  • Ah, finally. A version *with* the 'why'. I like it. Of course he's copying Ted's interpretation, but why should he do anything else? Ted's version is perfect.

  • I LOVE DREW SARICH!!!!!

  • INCREIBLE!!!!!!!!!

The first real version of this song. Ted is the best, balsamo is great, and this man, Drew, has made the best version of this song.

  • Incredible, great, superb!

  • One of the most incredible versions I've ever seen.

  • F'ing hell!!!!! This man is BLOODY AMAZING!!!!!!

  • phantastic!

  • how can i get this traaaaaaaaaaaaaack??????? i looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove iiiiiit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • great!!

  • la kago...de verdad me hi¿ubiera gustado verlo actuar...la kagoooo

  • I'm a Brit so I dunno who this fella is but he's the only dude to come close to Ted Neeley. Well done Drew.

  • I run Drew's Message Board, and I wanted to let you JCS fans know that I just got a call from Europe informing me that Drew will be playing Jesus again this year on March 20th, 2008 in Vienna's yearly concert.

  • good... very good feeling

but i still prefer Steve Balsamo

  • i don't like the way he did this at all. i'm glad the other guy got the role. he's too angry, and not sad enough.

  • I disagree. I've never heard a more emotional rendition. Gethsemane is a complicated song to approach from an acting standpoint, and I think drew nails all the emotions (anger, confusion, sadness, fear, a sense of betrayal) and still manages to kick the vocals out of the park.

  • this is spine shivering.

    wow.<3

  • Drew and Ian= Best versions

  • listening to many jesus recordings and being a HUGE fan of JSC i have to say Drew tops them all off as judas and jesus he adds so much emotion to an emotion filled song that not everyone does. he is absoutely amazing and makes ted neely look like an amateur.

  • eeeeeeasy there, fella , with the "ted neeley amateur"

  • Wow! This is a freaking amazing version! Drew's voice sort of reminds me of Sebastian Bach of Skid Row. The original recorded version with Ian Gillan is still my favourite though. Overall, MUCH better than the Glenn Carter version, even though he does have a great voice. Ted, Ian, and Drew rock so much more.

  • I´ve listened to Ted Neeley since I have been 11. Now I´m 40 and get to know Drew Sarich and wow the throne is newly occupied. Drew has such a vivid control of the registers, timbres an colours as I never heard before.

Mr Trip: I love Ted (by the way did u saw him at Jay leno, great) but drew is more authentic, vivid, innocent, vulnerable and real to me. I´m struck. And by the way he has very fresh new lines. I love him, man.

  • I totally agree, and Drew really fills the "Rock Opera" status.

  • There is only a Jesus Christ: Ted Neeley.... where is the soul???? he has skill but no soul

  • what do you mean where is the soul? if this performance has not soul then nothing has one.

  • I don't like Ted Neeley at all, so I respectfully disagree...

  • agree

  • That voice... what a gift.

  • Where did you get this recording? It's so amazing!!

  • best ever !! awsome

  • it's my favourite song=)

  • LOVE this song and you have really done it justice. Fabulous!!

  • lol he played judas, but he can rock out jesus' biggest song in the show...he's freakin amazing.

  • I LOVE this version! I'm an alto and I can't hit that high G!

  • I absolutely adore Sarich and this version is wonderful, but I think his voice is better suited to Judas. Just his tone of voice and acting just fits Judas perfectly nd I love seeing him play it. <3

  • Yeah, I agree....

I think his tone is just perfect for Judas, but my God he rocks everytime!

    He's almost not human....lololol....what a voice!

    Love it!

  • OMG, totally agree with redblackBROADWAY!

  • Thank You ( High Five) x

  • well Drew played off broadway Judas to the wonderful Billy Porter's Jesus

i think when he was like 3years old

just kidding but he was young

  • Superb version, he makes it his own. Where the other ones are more sad, tired and emotional Jesus'es, his one has more anger. Love it!

  • yeah He did play judas in the broadway version

  • no he didn't :)

  • I can only imagine how stunning it looks on video... wow!

  • dint he play Judas in the broadway performance? i dnt remember him being Jesus

  • Drew was never in JCS on Broadway. His first Broadway production was Lestat.

  • great voice second after original:)im very impresed

  • oh my god...

there are just no words for him

i WISH that i could see his acting during this song because his vocals alone are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING... i cant imagine how much more amazing he is with the visual

    ughh i love him

i wouldve loved to see him in JCS!

  • Excellent version! I like it, except for the parts where it seems to me that his throat is breaking and the sounds don't go out so clear. Though I must admit this gives strength to the song. I very much like this version.

  • MYYYYYY GOOOOOD!!!! HE IS PERFECT!
