When I did this at my training, I got stuck! When they tried to pull me out, the freakin strap came untied! I heard my chief say oh no, it came off and freaked out a little bit. Then said to myself, ain't nothin to it but to do it! And made it out! Coolest thing I've ever done!
This is mandatory training for The Denver Fire Department and many other fire departments across the country. you should ask the department you will be working for if they do a confined space drill like this.
@firewerxfilms the closest thing our academy did to a confined space drill was the instructor took one of the rooms in the house we were gonna use for a burn and built sort of a maze with a lot of rope hanging and we had to go through drywall and take our pack off and hold it infront of us to go between the 2x4 and then find our way out, our hoods covered the mask so we couldn't see. it was awesome
Yes, this tube was kind of scary although I am not claustrophobic. However since I was not a real recruit but only receiving a weeks training for a winter in Antarctica we did it without SCBA.
Well this would suck for broadshouldered people like me (my shoulders are the widest part of my body by far) but I would still love to try it. It sucks I can't be a ff (I am blind in 1 eye and the fire academy won't accept anyone without perfect vision ).
@zildjian320 I plan on being a firefighter also, but luckily for me, i'm not clautraphobric. But I'm guessing some good ways of getting through a drill like this are just simple things. If you're crawling like this just stare at the ground, don't try to look how much further you have left, and try to get your mind off of it by singing to yourself. Just simple things, don't think you'll get stuck and suffocate, they WILL get you out! Just try to relax and don't stop moving! I hope i helped!!
@SunnyvaleRaider71 everyone is claustrophobic your either alot or a little....These drills really change your mind set on what being claustrophobic really is
Im 15 right now and an explorer and we have done drills like this before but with shorter length tubes and I don't do too well in them. I really want to become a firefighter and in case I have to do something like this when the time comes, what are some good technics I can use too make this easier on me. I understand that if you control your breathing, and you're calm it can help, but what else can I do?
Every fire department trains a little differently. Unless you hear from the firefighters who work for the department you are applying for, you really won't know for sure what type of confined space training they do. You should talk with them before you get too far into it.
Although the worm tube, shown in this video, is considered confined space training, it is more a confidence builder, as well as a tool to help weed out those with serious claustrophobia issues.
By far this is the worst part. We did several rounds in the smokehouse, which seemed huge the first search, but got a lot smaller on our final run. We used 55 gallon drums. There were two together until the final test, where they added two more without telling us. Yeah, I'm not your confined space guy
@DUFC4LIF there are lots of jobs on the fire ground besides going into a burning structure. As long an the Incident command knows not to send you into a building you will be fine. One thing that i usualy do is put up ladders on to the structure incase firefighters inside need to get out in a hurry. there is several tasks that need to be filled besides going into a confined space. there is a job for everyone.
I'm about to go through the academy. I hate tight spaces, but the FD is going to push me to my limits I CANT WAIT until I get to do a drill like this. I love trying to overpower my body and mind.
during my confined space training day, (8 years ago) i was being a smart ass so the instructor made me crawl through our 25 foot cement tube like this with the pack on my back, the last 10 feet of the tube where it was the narrowest it was so narrow cause i had the pack on my back i got stuck, i litterally had to use my toes and fingertips to inch my way out, took 30 minutes to go 10 feet, i ran outta air and had to take my regulator off so i could breath. last time i was a smart ass in training
I Really Would Like To Become a Firefighter, And I have no problem with tight space's to climb or crawl through at all. And By the way, Where Can I get "a Firefighter's Journey"?
Movie people know nothing of the firefighter's experience, that's why the movies fail the reality test. This documentary is made by firefighters. That's the difference.
@abc123abc81 if u dont freak out but if u control your breathing which is hard to do cause ive had to do that before and its frekain sucks all the hell im pretty sure it was an MSA pack which is a 45minute bottle but in reality u probably have 25 30 minutes
I am thinking about becoming a fire fighter. But I race atvs about 10 or 12 weekends a year. I know different departments have different schedules but would it be possible to switch shifts for those days?
You would be given additional chances to make it through. If you fail, then you might be kicked out of the academy. I say might, because it depends on the circumstances.
Good for USAR guys but don't see the purpose for our day to day stuff. Every dept. has all shapes and sizes, I know some (in shape or not) would not fit at the end.
I am in the end of my level 1 training now and we had to do a confidence course at the beginning and found out how claustrophobic i really am. I agree it's 99% mental but I could not do this. At first when the tube was bigger i thought it looked easy but noticed the tubes got smaller. I would flip out.
well dam, people keep teasing me because i weigh less than 100lbs.... i am that small, i could prolly fit through there with no problem...... I AM NOT A BIG GUY, people think i am 14, but i am almost 21 and i am just small built.... =(, problem with me right now is, need to start weight lifting, i am doing pushups and sit ups. etc.... lol
@joemac356, The pipes are roughly connected through overlapping flanges. It is not a perfect fit, as you can see daylight through the cracks. But it does make separating the pipes a little difficult. Also, The pipes are slightly embedded in the ground to keep them from moving about. These two factors, along with the weight of the concrete, makes moving the tubes a difficult and time consuming process. That's why the ropes.
Moving the tubes is the back-up if the ropes fail.
@CurtisSalopek if the SCBA "Self Contained Breathing Apparatus'' fails u run out of air, thats why they tie a rope around the foot of the firefighter so they can pull them out, incase that happens.,
yea i ma junior the first time i put on an scba i was kinda freaked out cuz i never did anything like it before... but i love training i cant w8 for the next week but tomorrow we have a meeting :( i want to train like 2 days a week love it
@ TriForceDungeon Its okay if you stay calm, when your in a tunnel or small space like in the video, it can start to press on your chest, makes it a little more difficult. I haven't done this particular training, I'm from a rural team. I can imagine though when you get in the tunnel, and its already pressing on your chest, can't move your arms, you start to panic. Yea it would get hard to breath. Big city fighting is harder than out here in the country I'll be the first to admit.
it is really hard, but it's a calling, and if you can make it you achieve your dream-anything worth doing is worth fighting for,I loved the training, and it's great to know what you are capable of!Even when I thought I couldn't do it,my team supported me,it really kept me goin!the first time I used my scba,I was breathing like he was,it's intense, but after you relax and get used to it you can move on!
I got to put on all th equipment and do a challenge with this stuff today job exploring at the college SO MUCH FUN! PS I'm 14 I like the thermal sight they had fucking amazing
@psp310 I really doubt youre claim that anyone can be a firefighter, we lost 5 out of 20 on our course and then not all could hack the probation. i gather youre a fireman as well, perhaps its easier youre side but not here.
@bobbelsekwol anybody could say "yea i wanna be a firefighter" and get the application start training but not everybody could make it through to become a true firefighter In my class we had 2 people that quit on the first day....said it was to hot an to hard to carry the 1 3/4 through 500 degree heat................im from new york what about you
@psp310 I`m from merseyside england. we kinda stopped our real live fire training becos firemen where getting scorched. our training now consists of sitting infront of a computer screen, answering questions. its really a poor substitute for the real thing, although we do get our fair share of good jobs. another two firemen have died yesterday in a apartment fire, when will our government learn that cutting back in the fire service costs lives. i hope your well and enjoy your job better than me!!

This shit is REAL intense... I'm in the Academy and just crawling under Fire Trucks and Ambulances blindfolded freaked me out!!! I got bad anxiety, but didn't show it!!! MIND OVER MATTER!!!
"Jtheis2011....this is what literally shows if you are a Firefighter or not, it is intense as you said, and trust me, just take your time, think positive thoughts and just think how closer u get to the end.....and make sure most of all you listen to your instructors voice the whole time...seriously it does work and will pay off....welcome to the brotherhood bro....best of luck.
stovoyager- thanks ya i will keep that in mind. firefighters run in my blood my brother just joined the fire dept down in teneese i live in minnestoa, my uncle was a firefighter in shakopee minnestoa and he loved it (god bless his soul) but ya i want to take his foot steps cant wait
I just did this today on my last day of recruit school. It was intense. We actually did it in the dark on stairs going up and down. However, it wasn't as long so probably a wash. Definitely a ball-buster.
dominater all you need is a highschool diploma in most places. check out citys fire department pages see when people are hiring. also join a volunteer fire department near you and get a feal for what its like.
IM a probie right now in pfd co 3 hq, and I give my full hoorah to that guy. My SCBA training was like that and I panicked at the end. Made it through but damn did I get psyched out. My officers soaked me with a 5 gallon pail for saying " fuck this thing" at the very end...hhaha
I've done a simalar evolution but it was sixty feet in the air in a silo shute.A fellow firefighter was having a panic attack at 50 feet and I was next in line to go up.I got him out but one of the doors in the shute failed and we fell two feet our lanyard caught us Thankfully.
ya thats what i thought until we had to do our confined space drill for firefighter 1 which i did but the tube was the only spot that i got stuck at its not as fun as it looks
i would do anything to become a firefighter

"Jtheis2011....this is what literally shows if you are a Firefighter or not, it is intense as you said, and trust me, just take your time, think positive thoughts and just think how closer u get to the end.....and make sure most of all you listen to your instructors voice the whole time...seriously it does work and will pay off....welcome to the brotherhood bro....best of luck.

Oh man, I felt the intensity! But who said it was going to be easy? I'm wanting to be a firefighter eventually.

What do you need post highschool to become a fire fighter?

When I did my SCBA training we had something similar to this but it was a culvert pipe so at least you had rivets to dig into and push on.

Haven't been to training yet, but I already know that will be my least favorite part.

I'm pretty small, i'm sure i could do that.
All you have to do is have the right mentality.
and just stay calm.
