I am your favorite white child but I know a LOT of Spanish. I grew up with lots of kids who spoke it, I learned THAT kind of Spanish early. When I was older I took classes for it for 6 years. I remember when I went to beauty school in a mostly Dominican neighborhood, the girls would talk shit on everyone(not me thankfully!) and they wouldn't know I could still understand what they were saying! Later in the year I just chimed in their conversation and they were SHOCKED and very happy I knew:)

*falter when speaking to native speakers of whatever language they're studying, I mean. As far as the accents go - that's also par for the course. You're just not used to hearing certain accents, and that's fine. I used to watch a Colombian telenovela, and I only got about 30% of the dialogue! Keep working on it!

Brian - it is extremely common for people who are learning a language in adulthood (as opposed to learning as a kid and speaking it since then) to falter when listening to native Spanish speakers. So, you're right on track. You need to be in an environment where you HAVE to speak Spanish, and the Spanish-speakers won't speak English to you to make it easier for you. I'm sure some of your friends can set up a gathering or conversations like that.
