  • Comment removed

  • This is quite definitely the worst thing I've ever seen.

  • 2:00 Why the hell would anyone jump from a horse ?

  • since when were tusken raiders in lord of the rings

  • 1:07 what the hell is he doing xD

  • @angelcassiel13 I guess is Lord of the Apes!

  • atleast its colour...

  • Uhh.. I thought I was watching an Indians VS cowboy animation movie...

  • hahahahahh thank god they did a update :P

  • meh

  • @Leftysfive93 thanks ^^ xD

  • @4:42 The Planets of the Apes-looking orc's slow motion is unintentionally hilarious since Gandalf looks like he's waving his sword around like a baton.

  • Gandalf (?) looks like a nordic god in 2:43

  • @CiaeKirai ah sry that isn't gandalf Dx

  • @CiaeKirai It's Theoden, King of Rohan.

  • I thought that this was LOTR. Must have clicked on Planet of the Apes by accident, whoops.

  • 0:19 Altair?

  • Thanks so much for uploading this. It's obviously not perfect and it's easy to criticize this now, but 30 years ago this brought to life some of the ideas in Tolkien's books which were pretty tough for some kids to read, let alone visualize. Really enjoyed watching this again.

  • I cannot wait for The Hobbit.

  • they look like monkeys and tusken raiders :P haha

  • 4:33 Gandalf's terrible accuracy

  • @killer7magnummatt LOL HAUYHAUAHUA eu ri muito

  • the orc at 1:05 has the rite idea...

  • Comment removed

  • lol at :34

  • lol.. jesus helped creating this movie... it says so in the end credits

  • i just love the orcs so savage and unmerciful, you better not get in my path attitude, love it.

  • The only bad thing about this is there's actually not as many people in the battle as implied in the book itself... But otherwise, really nice :D

  • It's a crude rendition.

  • GANDALF!! GANDALF!!

  • I guess because I'm such a big Bakshi fan, it's hard for to to hate this, I didn't like it when I saw it as a lil kid, but as an adult I can appreciate it a lot more. I think Bakshi did the best he could with Tolkien's books, which are not easy to adapt to film. The rotoscoping is kinda funky, but this film would have never seen the light of day if it had been animated hand drawn frame by frame with the same realistic character designs.

  • @Chickengirl005

I rather like the rotoscoping - considering the period of time it was made, this movie looks rather realistic in certain parts.

  • It makes me like the movie trilogy even more! I rate this movie 4 out a 10 at best, but it's a zero in comparison to Jackson's version.

  • @AJDavid90 Jackson's screen play is based largely on this version...watch the layout more closely and you will see not just the screenplay, but even the voice acting had a major influence on Jackson's version. Jackson just put all the various artwork and animated versions together in one brilliant film. Easy to do when all the imaginative groundwork has been laid :)

  • @gudskyld Thats a reduces statement. What about Tolkien's work, and this film is so incomplete, and the return of the king is not even part of it, of course it played a part in Jackson's work but not a major one, and the director of this one says himself that he regrets doing the movie.

  • @AJDavid90 You are probably right in that it was Tolkien's work (the writings) that started it all. As far as images and intonations, this film went a long way to shaping how Jackson interpreted the first 2 volumes. What I intended to say is that a lot of Jackson's screen plays for the first 2 films were greatly inspired by this version. Look at details, you will see what I mean. The disappointing part is the ending and the way in which the darker side was interpreted.

  • @gudskyld ridicules I mean*

  • this looks funny with the snowflake option :D

  • The Peter Jackson version is way better.

  • @MrImastinker

    This version is way older

  • @MrImastinker captain obvious strikes again!!!!!

  • The music from 3:10 to 3:50 is freakin' epic.

  • wow someone rendered this good

  • i wonder, does Bakshi ever planned in cutting out Frodo and Sam meeting with Faramir, or he alredy cutted that out? it looks like it was never included

  • @RodimusFilmsnThings He planned to make a sequel but didnt do it. Unfortunately. =(

  • @KalleJularbo true. true. god, i freaking love this movie, more than the jackson ones.

please, check my channel for the LOTR Part One edit, not only it fixes the Saruman/Aruman issue, but the nonsensical narration at end is gone, and the ending are switched, so it makes the movie more like ''this is going to have a sequel''

but unfortnatly, it's not fully uploaded, only part 6 so far.

  • still not a great film, but far better than its sequel, return of the king 1980 is simply awful

  • 3:55 GANDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!

"The forces of darkness were driven forever from the face of middle earth" wait a sec have you forgotten the RING??????? What about SAURON???

  • Comment removed

  • is this a action film or a cartoon...the world may never know

  • Comment removed

  • As much as I think Jackson's films created the greatest cinematic trilogy in history ... This film from 1978 was my first exposure to LOTR as a kid, and it was amazing!! There are actually screens from this that I prefer over Jacksons ... This film will always have a place in my LOTR heart.

Ps .... And those splattering blood scenes were scary as hell as a kid!!!!!

  • Why do the orcs look like gorillas? WAIT: RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES SNEAK PEAK?!?! *gasp*

  • ok, i dont get why people HATE so much this movie, or ralph bakshi for relying so much in rotoscoping, master animator Richard Williams said in his book that you dont train animation, you learn it alone, you can reinvente the wheel, you take your choices and go on with it,in my opinion, the rotoscoping for this movie looked very beatiful, especially when it was posterized in the battle scenes, and Tim Burton worked on this!and its a far more accurate representation of the book thanthe jackson film

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa cool story bro

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa

which bible dictates that every damn adapted film MUST be 100% faithful to the book?

    That's fucking ridiculous

  • @crematedmemoir if youre going to adapt someone else's story, what's the point to change to fit your vision? make your own story! the big difference between jackson and bakshi, was that bakshi respected the original story, unlike jackson, which claimed to be ''long and boring'' and changed 90% of the scenes and dialogues.

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa

I'm sorry mate, but that's bullshit!

Jackson wanted to ADAPT LOTR, not COPY it

It's just another artist's rendition of the story

If people had to remain completely faithful to the story, we'd be watching the same shit over again

Bakshi did it his way, Jackson did it his...there is absolutely nothing wrong with a director making the story as he sees fit. So stop winging and just watch the damn video

  • @crematedmemoir are you implying that i am trolling? i love the jackson films, they have decent pace and character development and cool action scenes, but i like the books more because that's exactly what tolkien said, and a lot of the characters were done better in the bakshi film than in the jackson film because they remained true to the book, also, it was the very first adaptation, and bakshi only got permission to do it because Tolkien's daughter loved what he did with Wizards (next post)

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa trolling, no...but making completely invalid points, yes. Tolkien wrote the story how he imagined it...Bakshi made his film as he imagined it...Jackson made his films as he imagined them...people should not have to work along restrictions that they don't want to work in...look at the Shining...completely different to the book, but the story was basically the same. BTW, how Bakshi got the rights to the book is completely irrelevant

  • @crematedmemoir i understand your point, and i have to say yes, they are valid, but that doesnt mean mine are not.i think you didnt get the whole''respect someone else's story''Bakshi made his vision on the books, but remained true to them because Tolkien didnt want anyone to make a film based on his books because they would change too much of the plot, and Bakshi knew that, and gained some extra credit for making a good movie (others may disagree),but to put his vision and remain true to thebooks

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa

Dude, really? How did Jackson not respect the story? He just made his own version of LOTR...there's nothing wrong with doing that

  • @crematedmemoir he said that it was ''long and boring'' and made his own version of LOTR, i love his movies, theyre entertaining.

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa

exactly! So why should he have completely conformed to the book?

  • @crematedmemoir i dont know, Bakshi remained true to the book because he knew that if someone else do it theyre gonna change like 85% of the story, himself said that '' it wasnt my job to say: hey, take Gollum off and change these 2 scenes, my job was to say: that's what the genius said'' hell, even Jackson respected what he did with Lotr, it's your option to change someone else's story, if want to change, im okay with it, if you remain true, that's your option.

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa

ok, so you finally came out and said it...good stuff

  • @crematedmemoir i just resumed everything i said so far to you, and you finally agree.

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa

no dude...at the start you were complaining about directors not being faithful to the books and that that was bad...

  • @crematedmemoir i just said that this was more faithful to the film than the Jackson film, i wasnt bashing anything.

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa

    sounded like you were...

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa Um this version is no where near as faithful to the books as jacksons, not even close. At least the parts jackson changed makes sense when you hear the explanation. This movie leaves out chunks and chunks of the story.

  • @phenom568 you clearly haven't read the books, Jackson changed 90% of the story to begin with, and to be honest, Bakshi did leave out certain parts of the story, but it was because they were running on a very small bugdet and the studio only allowed 120 minutes of film while Jackson had 380, and plus, it was going to have a sequel, that means that a lot of things that werent developed or explained in the first film, they were going to develop it in the sequel

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa Don't waste your time, some people just refuse to understand or appreciate this film, or Bakshi. If it were simplistic & easy, it would be popular.

  • @amaxamon true bro. i really like this film, despite it's flaws, i even made an edit called ''the part one edit'' wich fixes the Saruman aruman thing

  • its ralph bakshi you idiots... its supposed to look like this...

  • This would have given me nightmares as a kid

  • the sand people did return...and in greater numbers (10,000) just a obi wan predicted

  • @ScoTTishN1NJA Actually, they bear more resemblance to monkeys...

  • is it really that hard to draw armor on people? Is this movie so small budget they didn't have enough graphite to make people look decent?

  • 2:44 LEGO shield

  • @apocalyptica003 that's no shield that's a Diablo 2 Buckler :))

  • It's sad that you can tell which parts were made first. It's pretty clear The Shire and the journey to Rivendell from Bree were made first becuase they have great animation.

Then they did the Fellowship parts which are still fairly good, but a little spastic at the Balrog, and the Gollum scenes.

Then they did Boromir's death which was okay.

And it went downhill from there, and by Helm's Deep it's mostly tinted live-action. And clearly the prologue was last since it was all silohouettes

  • it looks a bit like LOTR and rise of the planet of the apes,

i mean, look at those 'orks', they're just chimpanzees

  • @ojima510 do you know how an ork loks like???

  • @andespuri well, Tolkien describes them as:

"...they are (or were) squat, broad, flat-nosed, sallow-skinned, with wide mouths and slant eyes; in fact degraded and repulsive versions of the (to Europeans) least lovely Mongol-types."

So it would seem like these orks, but I prefer PJ's or Rankin-Bass's.

  • @ojima510 fucking crap, i hate translated books, in the mexican edition the ork description is so diferent of that, i have to get the book in it´s original language

  • This is the best part of the movie, the music really gets me pumped. This soundtrack is fucking amazing.

  • yay for history lessons. alas my knowledge has been defeated good show sir good show, now htf do you know that lol

  • ok wtf they had much better animations when this came out I'm pretty sure fantasia came out before this

  • @therealTaichiYagami WAY before fantasia, 20 years to be presicely,

in the 70's, a huge collapse happened and they had to shortn bugdets and those beatiful animated disney movies died along with disney himself, and because of less money, less fluid movements and those pretty colors.

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa you're kidding right? fantasia was made in 1940 (to be precisely?). there had been better animation than this for years. this was cheaply done, rotoscoping, live action. smart idea, i guess, but it just does not look right, even by 70's standards if you look at the critics ratings. even the hobbit animated film, from a year before, was much better than this. it is not nearly as spastic and weird as this, and only made a year before, during the 'huge collapse' you speak of

  • @MrAsthomas notice how disney barely released a film in the 70's

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa the rescuers? aristocats? winnie the pooh? ROBIN HOOD?????

  • @MrAsthomas ok, you win, but it's not like they got REAL attention, Walt Disney was alredy dead

  • Go Panoramix

  • geez those orcs (?) at the beggining look so awkward.

  • So, this is where Disney's Merlin got hired after that Arthur movie...

  • Press 5 for the longest yell, ever.

  • the sword inpales ganondalf XD

  • 3:20 the music almost made me cry

  • @MFcrazy16 me too. if it wasnt because of the music, id say this film would be suckage.

  • My name is Gandalf and im a mad man swigging my sword around and acting like i need 2 go 2 the toilet. same everyday when im bored looking at monkey shaped things that hey call orc's

  • There's always one, when everyone's lined up for that family picture some dumb orc has to wiggle his spear at the camera.

5:20 should totally have some orc getting hit in the head by Gandalf's sword as they ride past. That would have been an epic ending

  • Damn, it´s painfully obvious that they just traced most of the animation... D:

  • So... is that a monkey?

  • wow. this makes the new one look rubish

  • rotoscoping looks so wierd

  • 0:02 he needs a dentist lmao :P

  • @emmatuck I think most characters in this version of The Lord of the Rings need a dentist!

  • One thing that no one can take away from this movie is that it is more true to Tolkien's world than Jackson's movies. Tolkien drew his inspiration from the early middle ages, 476-1066, when describing the appearance of Middle Earth's people. His own paintings clearly goes to show this as well. Yet what do you see in Jackson's movies? Plate armor and an architecture very much too advanced. Rohan is the only faction of people true to Tolkien standards in Jackson's movies.

  • @Faxe90Swe thats what i thought too... but i still love the films :D this cartoon however will always be seperate perfection on its own. love it :D

  • Aragorn the trouserless Mexican.

  • Aragorn really needs to buy a pair of pants....

  • Thank god we have the peter jackson version

  • terrible terrible terrible movie!

  • where are the orcs< i dont remember the apes and sandpeople in the Books.

  • Let's celebrate our victory by throwing our swords straight up into the air!!!

  • This music doesn't really fit the context. It's a great march but sounds like it belongs in like "Bridge on the river Kwai" or something.

  • @Methrt3 Actually I think it sounds a lot like the music from The Great Escape.

  • Well...Did frodo finally got there in time to throw the ring into the fire and live happly ever after?!

  • Why does Aragorn look like a native american?

  • AND THE END??? WTF!

  • @TheBrightmanFan They didn't have money to make any more.
