I was travelling between London Bridge and Stockwell in 1998/9 when one of these turned up - though unrestored to any great degree. Brought back fond memories of when they were regularly in service. Can't think why it turned up then - maybe as a replacement for a newer one that had broken down. They are not quite the same thought without hundreds of cigarette buts jammed into the grooves along the floor.
@AustinSomerset Yes, quite shocked to see shiny red paint outside, with the wooden floors varnished. No cigarette butts either. Great trains, and happy memories of my youth in London.
Intersting that it was going from Ealing Common to Uxbridage on the Piccadilly Line yet the line map above the windows clearly shows the Northern Line! Very surreal!
Real nostalgia, I was a guard on the Bakerloo and worked on these trains, I also learnt to drive them - and passed my motorman's test. The biggest mistake ever made was to get rid of guards and go to one man operation.
I remember LUL had 5 7 car 1938 trains in service til the late 80's. Nice to see they still have 1. I have 2 DM's in OO guage soon I will get the trailer and NDM :-)
Great clip! They were all EHO stock on the Bakerloo when I was in London and they had a real character about them...thanks for the trip down memory lane!
As kids back in the early 70s, we used the Piccadilly Line in the Hounslow area. Mostly the trains were the silver 1958 stock, with occasionally red 1938 stock. Sometimes they would mix & match them. A bit of red and a bit of silver...We always headed for the silver train - DoH!!!
@nederland4045 they were in service until 1988. Which just shows how out of date the tube is/was! The oldest trains running now are the 1972 stock, heading on for 40 years old..
Next Outing 29th June 3 round trips on the Northern Line Morden - High Barnet & return to celebrate 70 years of the 1938 tube stock! My seat is booked :0)
This was filmed 20.04.08. It is a special trip arranged by the London Transport Museum. I believe there is another one planned for 21st June, but unfortunately I won't be able to make it.
Hey, I'm in Liverpool at the minute, would you like to meet up? Possibly grab a pizza?

These trains are not in service, they were withdrawn in 1988.
How could these trains be here again?

That train's just how I remember them...and love those 70's posters...Guard - £25 a week!

They were never like that when in service. They were dirty, tatty and badly maintained.

@alijanlondon You used these in the 1930s?
