It is very true that the USA is trying to break into that region which nobody has sanctioned and to set up an enclave against Russia, like they are trying to do Eastern Europe. NATO's interest in Georgia is due to recently built oil pipelines crossing it from Azerbaijan to Turkey, and also some of Georgia's own (recently bombed) Black Sea ports.

Russia's interest in Ossetia is purely as a lever to influence Georgia, and in this case it was a trigger for war, which by the way resulted in the shut down off all major pipelines through Georgia, as well as destruction of Georgian military assets and embarrasment to NATO, which is bogged down in Afghan and Iraqi wars.

Next to Turkey (NATO Nation) is Georgia and back in April Nato (Germany and France) said no to Georgia. Had Nato said yes, we would be compelled by treaty to intervene.
