@alfiesmachinima I mainly use PVA glue for my bases... :) I have improved the method now, as shown in my last couple of videos, i.e the Airfix Buffalo and the Tamiya Bren Carrier, which both are on bases. :)
@woodysforest If you live anywhere near Lowestoft, go to Hannants in Oulton Broads.. if not try their website! Other than that you may have a local hobbystore, where you live.. Always support your local store if you can.. :)
@tompaswedenbajs Aha! Trevligt!
That is incredibly simple!!!! Thanks for posting the vid. After the base is painted,do you need to seal the oasis with a clear finish to keep bits and pieces from falling off?
@Ospreynut No, I haven't needed to.. yet! But then I don't handle the diorama much, once done.. and when I do I only hold it by the outside of the base.. :)
@Ospreynut I have since heard about a good method.. You need to soak the oasis in well diluted PVA glue.. this will make the foam go hard and anchor any grass or whatever you have pressed into it securely, once well dry.. :)
For the 'oasis' dioramas I don't really use grass, as the oasis crumble and looks a bit like grass when painted.. but I have a few bags of various types of grass, from warhammer to Hornby.. :)
Then again, having studied the bases of my sons WarHammer figures, I have a feeling it may well be grass flock from the WarHammer Games Shop, after all... :)
He used to do a lot of it.. but he enjoyed the assembly and painting of the figures more than actually gaming.. he found a lot of them only the other day, that still needs to be put together and painted! He'll get them done once his treatment has finished, I think.. :)
Yes, you can.. :) Personally I get mine from the local hobby shop who makes them himself.. any size to order! But any well sorted modelling shop should stock bases! If not try somewhere online, like Hannants! A good and easy to use substitute is ordinary framed photoframes, which are reasonably inexpensive and also gives yuo a framed edge which will help to keep 'everything' in place. They also come in different sizes and colours, plastic or wood, so you have a good choice. Hope this helpes you!
great vids, im getting back into scale model building after some years of not doing it.... that oasis stuff can be bought in Wilkinsons in the UK any peeps interested... i will be modelling again once i have the money which wont be long.. and this vid is excellent as ive never made diorama's before... just static models..
Thank you.. didn't know Wilkinsons sold the stuff.. :) This is just a simple way of making a base.. you can add whatever you want to it, of'course.. :)
with diorama's as well, im planning for in the future, having a 1:72 plane possibly a BF109 and a spitfire going over the diorama and on the diorama having smaller scale scenery of the english countryside... to give it the right impression in my opinion... as photographing from above would make it look better and more realistic
I'm really annoyed with myself because I have some diorama material, including two or three wooden bases someplace in this house, in some box, that I will probably never find.
For my needs right now it will suffice.. I saw somebody mae a very good diorama using it.. he cut out trenches and similar stuff, but he did line them, of'course.. I'm still working on various ideas.. :)
That was something I only got into just before I stopped model making. I thoroughly enjoyed trying to make them as realistic as possible with whatever came to hand!
I'm working on that b it yet.. this was just a trial, for a very basic base.. as stated! :) I quite like the opportunities this will give me though, to create something quite good! I hope.. :)
For a very quick "base" I even use the bottom of an IMEX display case. The added benefit,is the clear lid can go over the whole diorama when I am done. Pity I can't find one big enough for my DORA railgun... On a side note, monday night I will be on my TankCarl blogtv channel building the Trumpeter B4 M1931 tracked Russian howitzer. aorund 8 PM EST. 3 steps a night.
Would have loved to log on to see you / it, but if I'm back from London in time I will most likely be attending the club meeting (North Essex Modellers) tomorrow night.. so either way I won't be near a computer.. :)
Good idea for a quick base, yes.. and my models could sure do with a lid.. :)
No.1 rule of modelling: NEVER throw away anything that can be remotely useful.. :) This one my parents sent me from Sweden a couple of years ago, but I haven't got round to start using it until now! I have seen somebodu making a really good WWI diorama with trenches and tanks, using 'Oasis' as the main material.. it's very versatile when it comes to cutting shapes.. :)
Yes, I'm hoping it will improve the general appearance of my models, at least when it comes to the tanks and similar stuff! If I make it to the club tomorrow I will put the T-80 and the Sahariana in the club competition.. :)
thank you i need alot of oasis stuff for my samurai diorama.!

Hi
I've noticed that there are two types of "oasis" - wet and dry.
Which one do you use ?
agaidawid190 2 years ago
Not sure.. but to the best of my knowledge it's most likely to be the dry one.. even if it is supposed to be wet when use properly (with flowers) :)

@BasicModelling thanx , nice vids by the way

Nice work. I used to just use a piece of ply wood, paint a base coat on it and then glue terrain made for model railroaders to the wood.
