Still, major progress. Compaq sold the first sub-$1,000 PC in late '97. It had a 486-core Cyrix Media GX CPU running at 180Mhz, 16MB of RAM, little over a gigabyte of hard disk space, no 3D acceleration or 1024x768 hicolor ability, incompatible audio, and a terrible architecture where video, audio and the modem were literally on the fucking CPU die. Just horrible! Worse than a decent used 1995 machine, for sure!
I used to get those AOL cd's in the mail just about every week. They made great drink coasters and sometimes I'd buy PC games from Wal-Mart, keep the game CD and put the AOL cd in and tape the box to return the game lol
lol omg i hated when you would take a floppy out before you saved a word doc and then it would make all that noise and you would have to put it back in and wait for it to save lol
It was slow as shit!

Used to get the CDs of the later editions, throw away the discs and use the jewel cases to store burned data.

AOL 2.7 on Mac was like a gift to hackers. You could do almost anything with a little snooping around.

Used to collect the 3.5 floppies, erase them and use them as free back-up storage medium. Back when media files were still well under 1 MB.
