the mannerism, the vocal jumps,,, the talent was built in and transferred straight into Whitney.. awesome voice Cissy had.. Hear her on Whitney's album years ago and been a fan ever since
O M G!! I knew she was a great singer, but never have I heard her sing with so much conviction as she did with this song. She just saaaaang the original version out of the place. Fantastic Job!
Holy moly!!! I've been listening to this song since it first came out in the 60's, when I fell in love with it instantly. I've listened to everybody's version. But I have to say this is the first time I have EVER heard it sung with the soul and passion it was intended to have. Far from killing it, Miss Cissy breathed new life into it and enshrined it. I can't believe this version has been languishing somewhere unappreciated for 42 years.
The talent in the family is undeniable. The only singer out of this generation that comes near to Cissy, Dionne and Whitney (RIP) is Jennifer Hudson. Everyone else is petrie dish artist. Most can barely sing live and or lack the soul.
I loved this voice way back in the day in the 1970s she did a lot of backup singing one particular song was a big hit for Herb Man I think that is correct and of course Aretha. Saw perform with him in the 1970s great great voice.
Wow!! The inspiration and emotion generated by this family just gets better with every video! Technology has given us a chance to view this musical history without which we would not be able. to. I especially enjoyed the mother/daughter duets and have never experiencedsuch a feeling of personal loss outside of my own family passings. Myheart goes out to you, Cissy; Whitney will be missed by many.God Bless you both.
MRS HOUSTON TAKE CARE WE LOVE YOUR DAUGTHER IN BHAM ALA THE LORD IS YOUR SHEPHERD WHITNEY WILL BE MISS YOU LOVE WHITNEY BUT GOD LOVE HER THE BEST MRS V V MCNEIL IN BHAM ALA LOVE U
I love this version. I don't now how MrSoulshock4444 can say Cissy killed it! I think it's brilliant. I always loved Cissy's voice and this is the first time I've heard this.
@MisterBlue55 i believe he was using the term "killing" as form of adoration. killing referring to her singing the song so well she laid to rest. entertainers often refer to outstanding performances as "killing it".
Fantastic VOICE!! just like Dionne Warwick, Whitney's cousin, and Aretha Franklin, Whitney's God Mother. Whitney was a culmination of all of these talents plus her own unique styling with her own signature sound, For over fifteen years she reigned as one of the most highly talented Divas out there. Whitney's death is a terrible loss at only 48, having destroyed her vocal cords with drugs. Just like Amy Winehouse, who didn't even make it out of her twenties. Why the demons and self destruction?
I saw this performance on TV in the late 60s or early 70s. Cissy is why I started listening to Whitney when i found out she was her daughter. Cissy is the ultimate singer and a treasure. I know she is heart broken that her only daughter is gone. My prayers go out to the whole family including Bobby Brown and their daughter Bobby Christina.
So many parts where Whitney sounds just like her 1:24 - 1:33 and 2:30 reallly sounds like Whitney, when she says that "late in the midnigt houuuuuur",WOW!
Damn If you listen closely her and Whitney really do sound a lot alike. Thank you for posting this! And I have to agree with CharlesBarry that 3:03-3:10 was amazing.
She sounds just like Whitney, but this is not a song for her its dreadful or better still its deadly their is only one singer for this song the one and only Ronette?Ronnie Spector.
whitney got her talent honestly. her sweet and strong mother inspired. and she is a legend. a sweet inspiration and talent? NO DOUBT! love cissy. thank you for your impact on the world of music.
I think she went secular to earn more money for her family, but didn't want to sing about sex, lying, cheating, and promiscuity. So she didn't become the biggest, most successful singer. I feel, though, she has no regrets. BTW, not only can she SANG, but her background singers aren't no joke!!!
Cissy actually did something very clever on that album: She recorded this song, Be My Baby, with an arrangement reminiscent of her niece Dionne Warwick's Burt Bacharach recordings, and then she covered one of those songs, "I just don't know what to do with mysel"f, and gave it a "wall of sound" arrangement like "Be My Baby" had originally. Very, very clever.
Cissy Houston is one of my favorite singers and one of the BEST SINGERS EVER! It definitely runs in the family (Dionne Warwick's brother excluded): ROCK AND ROLL AND SOUL ARE HERE TO STAY!
PS: I'm not disrespecting Dionne's brother. She said that he could'nt sing herself.
I recognize the bgv's too... They sang with Areltha Franklin also, as did Cissy at times... The one in the yellow is Carolyn Franklin (Aretha's sister)... wow
Classic Voice. In Oh SO Many ways , "Cissy Houston sings, In the Church of the World" in my book ... at 3:05 She sends us all To a Blessing and again at 3:30.Her voice we have heard many times and may have not known, God Bless her w/ Grace and many more Songs...
yeah i saw that she sang that one .. and "Yesterday" by the Beatles...
It's weird that it's rare to find a video of her singing from back then .. when everyone knows that she sang everywhere lol....and she's one of the best singers ever. I know there's more vids of her singing out there. Great Post.

Does cissy have a classic song she is known for, as a soloist? A hit single. Something that still gets radio play. A household song. A side.
