Just something that helped me with this. Marty talks about your highest finger on the fretboard being your anchor in your chords so if you play a 4 finger Gmaj, when you switch back to the F chord, try to keep the shape of your 3rd and 4th fingers (ring and pinky) and move that shape from the b and e strings of the G chord to the a and d strings of the F chord.

I started taking lessons about two years ago, but then after my first year of it our guitar teacher left to pursue his music career in Nashville and then by the time they got a replacement, my parents made me choose between horse-back riding lessons and guitar lessons and I chose riding. i think it is easier to make the transitions back to the F if you play the G chord by putting your ring finger on the 3rd fret, middle finger on the second fret and using your pinky on 3rd fret of the E. This leaves your index finger free and closer to the first fret of the B. You don't really have to move your hand at all. If you can learn to play the G chord that way it makes it to go back to the F which is the most problematic for beginners.
