Great game. I love it when do sequels to old-school games with both an old-school and new-school feel, as seen in games such as this, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Sonic Generations.
i think this one is even harder than other m it was soooooooooooooooooo freaking hard but that is all the fun its hard and rewarding if a game isnt a challenge its not that fun
I got this for my last birthday, and boy has it been frustrating. I honestly hate some aspects of the game and hate how much the checkpoint pig practically taunts me into using the super guide. If I were to try and get every last unlockable, I'd go insane. at this point, I just want to beat the main story
Hey you recommended this game to me a while ago Kwing! :D I'm ecstatic to say that I beat this game WITHOUT using Super Kong! :D I felt so fulfilled :)
The reason we don't have our favorite Kongs are, Rare was bought by Microsoft. Since Rare and Nintendo worked together on the Country series and on 64, Rare owns all of our favorite Kongs. (Lanky, Chunky, Tiny, etc.) That's also another reason we don't have the animal buddies either. Kremlings were also owned by Rare, Dk was drained :(
There were a lot of drawbacks in this game, but all the good aspects make up for them. I like that they brought back a lot of the original music, but I also think it would have been better if they would have featured a new OST. I also missed the zingers. While they pissed me off, I couldn't help but love them. :(
I actually got this game for Christmas and I love it.Mind you while I consider myself a true gamer,I'm a little more of a retro gamer. That being said, when I heard about this game,I had a huge nerdgasm. This game is amazing. It may hard as hell, but it's so much fun just to play DKCR.It's pretty much like playing Donkey Kong Country, but with better graphics, special effects, and much higher replay value.
You want to see star fox next time? what about Killer instinct? why they forget about that game,i was thinking "Maybe they are waiting all fighting games to release new KI and kick some ass" but no whyyyyyy.
I'm actually surprised when people complain a lot about the difficulty, don't get me wrong, it was very hard at times, but I never died enough times for the Super Guide to appear.. Well maybe a couple. haha It was challenging but not to the point of raising my blood pressure exessively. haha
Anyways great review. Both you and your wife have excellent voices for reviewing games btw!
The ultimate DK Country game would feature DK, Diddy, Dixie and Funky with the other Kongs used as NPCs, tag team play so DK isn't always the first player or Diddy isn't the 2nd banana, the same awesome genius platforming but with not just 2.5D camera angles.Water levels return, the Kremlings return and give them usable weapon upgrades like in DK64.
Great review as always guys! I must agree completely about the rocket levels, once you get the pattern down they are a bit more bearable, but having to get all the Kong letters is frustration defined! The temple levels made me want to pull my hair out at times(although they are very satisfying to finally complete), and I really wish that they had at least one checkpoint. Seriously made me want to send a letter to the developers, "Were the temple levels not hard enough?" LOL
if only little big planet had moving, interactive backgrounds, and I'm talking about the scenic ones that are by default even before you make a level.
I definitely look forward and hope Retro Studios makes another sequel and continues their genius. But Kwing definitely nailed it: Retro should work on rebooting the star fox franchise! Now that would be amazing! I loved star fox 64!!
Woe it takes two to start a flame war. This is getting of control. So I will be deleting all posts that started this. no, the reason that they removed the old characters is becouse Retro likes to distance there remakes from the original concept (I guess to make it there own?) don't believe me? notice that in the metroid prime games, there was hardly a mention of samus's previous adventures
Unfortunately, this game is on the Wii, which sucks balls. At least have the OPTION of no movement based bullshit and a real controller? Is that too much to ask?
I like these reviews but that woman makes me cringe with her script.. "I really liked the part how I could hop on KWing's back if I was struggling, thanks sweety!" like, Wow... really?
Although I never played DKC as a child, I did play Donkey Kong Land on the GameBoy. I was amazed at the visuals and thought "Wow, it's 8-bit, but it's also 3D. Cool!"
@kNIGHTWING01, your reviews are awesome, 5 days ago i saw this review, 3 days ago i bought it, many of your reviews make me buy or want to buy those games, and is it me or did Cranky Kong become a newly born Christian?

Rare has been messing up my childhood lately. A lot of good games from them were clearly on nintendo and since them going to xbox if I not mistaken, they been sucking wind. They make nothing great or short of crap since they beyond microsoft, and we know they focus has never been that great on games other than halo or gears imo. If they would have stood with nintendo, things might have been better for the remakes of the rare games.
@McXZealot Not true Nintendo asked Retro if they wanted to use the Kremlings but they chose not to and use enemies of their own so they can show we they could do differently from Rare. I thought the same as you until I did further research on it
Didn't get this game for Christmas, so I hoping to get this for my birthday a few days away :) I need to get the original DKC games for the virtual counsel too, I actually never did get a chance to play them to much when the games were in their prime.
Actually I'm quite opposite with the rocket and minecart levels. I thought the minecart levels were crazy and fun, but very easy compared to the original game's 2 mine cart levels. And I hated the Rockets since they were too simplistic and boring (MOAR BUTTONS). And I'm surprised that KWING USED SUPER KONG. KWING the so called gaming master. And you also can't really blame retro for not going for many goals like water levels and characters since they just touched the series. Great review anyway.
you dont need to loose to get those letters on DKC returns, you have to get the letter by rolling, and then you can jump on nothing, just like it was on old DKC
I don't mean to be a know-it-all, but I believe that it's the "background" that you meant instead of "foreground". The "foreground" is the stuff up front; the back is the stuff in the back.
if you think about it... there are some game companies that specializes in certain genres, like how square keeps making rpg, rockstar likes to make sandbox, namco might make a lot of genre's, but they're good at fighting games, nintendo is the greatest at platforming, and I guess they're also the best with adventure games, activision is the best with first-person right? or is there another one better than CoD? and I'd say capcom is all-round, making capcom a good bet to stay afloat in business.
@kNIGHTWING01 I still have a hard time taking smash brothers seriously as a fighter... it only uses 2 attack buttons and relies on simple inputs for specials.... there is no learning curb.
@smbz821 ummm yeah..... there are several better than COD (riddick, thedarkness, halflife 1, counterstrike, battlefield 1942, deus ex, doom, duke nuk'em 3d..... I could make a list that goes on forever.)
anyway, Namco's specialty is RPG and 3d fighters. Capcom specializes in 2d fighters, platformers, and action games. Activision is best at screwing employees and fans over (no lie), Konami is good at platformers and action games..... (I could go on forever with this aswell.)
@BillyCauseyjr recently I mean, not something notable in gaming history, but something made just now on the latest consoles, didn't halflife 1 happen years ago? konami has a platformer? and namco made an rpg that's good?
@smbz821 The castlevania wiiware games and ds games are platformers, Namco has made several good tales games on psp, Half life 2 is out on 360 and ps3.
I just bought this game for my brother....hehehe since its co-op that means I bought it for myself too! cant wait til xmas, your awesome review inspired me to buy this game so thanks a banana-bunch, DKC 1 and 2 are two of my favorite games so I know I'm going to enjoy this :)
i love how the DKC games have a pure difficulty. they dont introduce harder enemies and require power-ups to complete a level, no, your character and other enemies never change, all that changes is the level design.
i quite disagree with you, i personally loved the minecart and rocket barrel levels. with the minecart levels, i only remember 1 or 2 in every game of the original trilogy.
i personally hated the water levels, they were so slow paced.
Can you do a review on Michael Jackson The Experience cause im a huge MJ fan and i wanna know your opinion because i look at reviews before i buy the game
I bought this game today and it instantly became one of my all-time favourites because it's just that GREAT! If you've played any of the old DKC-games and enjoyed them, this is a must have. I think it's better than the original games and that's saying a lot. Sure, it is hard as hell and you will cry bitter tears of frustration many times, but yet you crave for more because you know your failure is the result of your bad playing. And finally when you succeed, the feeling of joy is indescribable!
wow what a Damn Good Review & Thanks you for saying "2010" Twenty-Ten reffering to the current year I thought I was the only one saying it that way lol!
You guys speak kinda cheesy but its a good change of pace from the potty mouth reviewers. It seems like you guys are auditioning for an actual tv review show. Seems a bit 2 scripted. But o well good job.
I thought the bird was similar in appearance to the Bird boss in DKC 2 and DK 64. As for David wise he was still with Rare until 2009, but DKC R was already in development and Kenji was already on board for the music. During the F8 project. There is no way David wise freelance since 09 could have worked on the music for the game. Since we know Kenji works closely with the game development as does Yasunari mitsuda. Some composers do the music later in devo.
The script is actually written in 2 parts and wasn't written with taking turns. TMNT 3 is an example of a Co Op Review you would like but others did not. For the opposite reason you stated. Kwife likes to repeat things and adlib...it doesn't always work out well. This is one of her better Co Op Reviews in the last 2 yrs.
Actually Kwing, Retro Studios left the Kremlings out because they were Rare's creation and even though Nintendo owns the rights Retro left them out due to respect for Rare.
Honestly, as much as I enjoyed this game, I had my problems with it, virtually the same problems you both had with it. I always loved the water levels in the old days, and I was kinda upset that Cranky wasnt really cranky anymore. They give him medication or something? Hopefully if they do a sequal, and with these titles, they probably will, they will learn from their mistakes, and bring back the other Kongs as well, multi-player perhaps? Who knows! We can only hope so!
While the game is hard, i found it more enjoyable than the SNES games. I beat the game with no Super Guide, and yes, the Rocket Stages and Mine Kart stages (and platforming stage) were almost impossible, but it was comically funny on how ridiculously hard they were. Idk, i love the DKC series, so im always happy with the outcome of every game.
Great review this is the only game that I own that my wife enjoy! We have a lots of fun playing Donkey Kong Country "returns" and it give her something to do when I am playing World of warcraft :D
i really enjoy how knightwing tightened up the co-op review. the older videos, although they are hreat, were a little sloppy joy. keep doing great reviews and your wife is always welcome :)
allot of complains 0.o i never grow up with donkey kong country series so i didn,t had 1 problem with the game beside motion controlls... but they dont ruin the game it works
How can you hate the difficulty of the game?! And the mine cart levels?! They were the best part!!!

I loved this game. My girlfriend and i beasted it. We found all the letters in each stage and did all the bonus levels.
It was hard, but we never used super kong. It was a great feeling to finally complete a level you're struggling with without using the guide.
And although the water levels in the original Dkc have some of the best swiming controls ever, i still hate water levels.
This game was perfect to me, but it would have been cool to see a return of some of the other characters.

@kNIGHTWING01 I still have a hard time taking smash brothers seriously as a fighter... it only uses 2 attack buttons and relies on simple inputs for specials.... there is no learning curb.

Thats why nintendo is my favorite video game makers of all time,
in 2nd comes rockstar games and in 3rd Valve
MrTURBOJOHN 10 months ago
@smbz821 ummm yeah..... there are several better than COD (riddick, thedarkness, halflife 1, counterstrike, battlefield 1942, deus ex, doom, duke nuk'em 3d..... I could make a list that goes on forever.)
anyway, Namco's specialty is RPG and 3d fighters. Capcom specializes in 2d fighters, platformers, and action games. Activision is best at screwing employees and fans over (no lie), Konami is good at platformers and action games..... (I could go on forever with this aswell.)
BillyCauseyjr 1 year ago
@BillyCauseyjr recently I mean, not something notable in gaming history, but something made just now on the latest consoles, didn't halflife 1 happen years ago? konami has a platformer? and namco made an rpg that's good?
smbz821 1 year ago
@smbz821 The castlevania wiiware games and ds games are platformers, Namco has made several good tales games on psp, Half life 2 is out on 360 and ps3.

I just bought this game for my brother....hehehe since its co-op that means I bought it for myself too! cant wait til xmas, your awesome review inspired me to buy this game so thanks a banana-bunch, DKC 1 and 2 are two of my favorite games so I know I'm going to enjoy this :)

@offtheheazy6
Awesome! We hope you enjoy the game with your bro.Have a Merry Christmas.
kNIGHTWING01 1 year ago
i love how the DKC games have a pure difficulty. they dont introduce harder enemies and require power-ups to complete a level, no, your character and other enemies never change, all that changes is the level design.
i quite disagree with you, i personally loved the minecart and rocket barrel levels. with the minecart levels, i only remember 1 or 2 in every game of the original trilogy.
i personally hated the water levels, they were so slow paced.

Can you do a review on Michael Jackson The Experience cause im a huge MJ fan and i wanna know your opinion because i look at reviews before i buy the game
doeball 1 year ago
I bought this game today and it instantly became one of my all-time favourites because it's just that GREAT! If you've played any of the old DKC-games and enjoyed them, this is a must have. I think it's better than the original games and that's saying a lot. Sure, it is hard as hell and you will cry bitter tears of frustration many times, but yet you crave for more because you know your failure is the result of your bad playing. And finally when you succeed, the feeling of joy is indescribable!

You guys speak kinda cheesy but its a good change of pace from the potty mouth reviewers. It seems like you guys are auditioning for an actual tv review show. Seems a bit 2 scripted. But o well good job.

I'm sorry Kwing, but there's some information in here that's wrong.
1st of all there are no familliar bosses, they are all new
2nd of all David Wise was not still employed with Rare at the time of this game, he left Rare in 2009
I don't want to seem rude or anything I just thought I should point that out.
TheVideoGameMan123 1 year ago
@TheVideoGameMan123
Some composers do the music later in devo.

single person reviews are better then taking turns. its harder to focus on the content of the review and its confusing and slows don the review.
it not a problem to do co op review but dont take turns on 1 script.
and i dont know what you are talking about the mincecart levels i thought they where the best in the series they are awsome.
MrL0cky 1 year ago
@MrL0cky
The script is actually written in 2 parts and wasn't written with taking turns. TMNT 3 is an example of a Co Op Review you would like but others did not. For the opposite reason you stated. Kwife likes to repeat things and adlib...it doesn't always work out well. This is one of her better Co Op Reviews in the last 2 yrs.
kNIGHTWING01 1 year ago
