SG, do you plan on reviewing the Midwest Industries 30 mm scope mount? Great channel by the way, subscribed! Good to see more quality and innovative gear for AK's.
Thats awesome, I have tried other side rail mounts but they angled back so mounting a scope required a very goofy cheek weld. This is forward so you can chock up on it like normal. Pls the co-witness is huge!
Czechpoint USA has a AK style sight rail for the vz-58 and have an optic mount for it, however they also say on there sight that while most mounts will fit they may prevent the weapon from ejecting properly
@Sturmgewehre there is a video on youtube by czechpoint that has a vz. 58 with what looks like a side mounted rail holding a red dot. im guessing the one you have and most dont have this?
Great review. One question, however. I am a left handed shooter, would this mount, or the throw lever in particular interfere with my grip of the rifle, or trigger pull?
I L.O.V.E. the Mako stock. I would rather cut off my left arm that give that stock up at this point. I've never found a more useful stock for an AK. It installs easily without modification. The stock is built like a tank. The riser for the cheek piece rocks for optics. It folds easily but locks in the extended position positively. And it looks right at home on y Arsenal AK.
@Sturmgewehre Glad to hear it. I wish there was a video before I bought the setup I have. Which is a great set up, but it doesn't fold that's for sure.
since this was posted ive changed my mind in that the TWS dust cover mount doesnt really seem to be a clear winner here, this side ride mount has its own place and is just another tool of the trade. peace
Very interested in this setup to replace the Russian Kobra red dot I currently own. However, the AK I plan on using it with has a hooded front post. Do you believe there would be any issues with co-witnessing or with the red dot sight picture itself with this setup and a hooded front post?
Off this topic, but I bought a Kahr CW-9 after your recommendation and I'm very happy with it. 450 rounds and no problems at all plus amazing accuracy for a pocket gun. Thanks.
I just wanna say that the left hand side folding issue is more the rifle as i've seen it doesn't matter what you have on the rail you still can't lock it if you have an optic on the rail
I had to pull it due to a mix-up with The Mako Group. They gave me the wrong info (and sent the wrong stock that I requested). The one featured in that video is the $438 stock when I ordered the $144 polymer stock. I will hopefully have both stocks to review side by side, but the one you see in this video is amazing. I guess it should be for $438. :)
I've not seen an underfolder with the side rail, so I can't comment. But my assumption would be that the stock wouldn't lock in the folded position. But as I said, I've not seen an AK configured this way in person so I don't know for sure.
Such a mounting solution may make me choose to buy an SAR-1 instead of a Romanian PM 63-65. Original PM63 obviously don't come with a dogleg scope mount, but the civilian SAR-1s do.
@Arphalia Strikefire is one of the longest 30mm Red Dots, people have reported trouble field stripping with the sight on due to the size... It will mount and fit just fine tho.
I have the RS-AKM with a Primary Arms M3, for less than $240 you have your self a great sighting system. I am getting to old to see well down the irons and this setup helped a ton without sacrificing anything.. Held zero for over 500 rounds now and shooting with both eyes open has really improved my accuracy.
Thanks for the review, I didnt quite understand how to use the pins but you made it very clear.
It's a stock offered by The Mako Group. It drops right in without having to cut or otherwise modify your tang. It takes a couple of minutes to install with nothing more than an allen head wrench.
@sturmgewehr would you take this mount over the TWS dustcover mount? Im attempting to make a sudo flat top AK using the TWS dustcover mount and a Midwest quad rail so I can completely remove the original irons and install magpull flip up sights. I don't plan on shooting past 200yds with this setup so it doesn't have to hold a absolutely perfect zero.
I am posting a review of that stock today as well. It's a stock imported by Mako Defense called the UAS-AKP stock. Check back shortly for the full review.
Love this mount. If only the tension lever was matte finished. The lever is crazy glinty unless you sand and paint it yourself. If they made this in DE Brown as well as black...it would be a perfect 30mm option for this weapon.
I can't understand what kind of differences you have found between your mount and POSP mount? I had no problems with its alloy at all. And it fixes on the rail very strong. Btw, I had such a mount that you shown and I sold it when I bought POSP.
@shootcentermass If the red dot fails (although highly unlikely with an Aimpont), you can fall back on your iron sights. The red dot is not "smack dab" on the front sight. This mount allows a 1/3 lower co-witness, so you have to really bury your cheek into the stock to get lined up with those irons. It works. The irons don't get in the way of the dot, and the dot doesn't get in the way of the irons.
There's something about side mounts on AK's that really bothers me. Not sure why but I just don't like them and have little confidence in their performance in a combat scenario, mostly due to bad experiences in the past. This mount seems like a vast improvement and yet I still think I would prefer a forward mounted optic. Thanks for sharing.
@shootcentermass Co-witnessing irons and optics is used as sort of a fail-safe. Optics fail, batteries die, Murphy shows up and operators need to be able to continue to fight, and removing the optic entirely might not be an option at the time. With co-witnessed irons, you can still sight down your iron sights through the tube of the optic. Most modern mounts place the iron sight picture in the lower 3rd of the optic's field of view so using the optic isn't a problem.
@Xzibit9 my Czech small arms VZ came with a AK side mount ,, i live in Canada we get the real deal here no US built 922r copys ... im just worried cause a vz ejects straight up and with that mount the empty shells might contact the optic?
