What ruined this beautiful voice was his HUGE ego, causing him to make poor choices of roles to sing, and a lousy, 2nd-rate baritone for a teacher! The voice was still gorgeous in 1963 when I saw him in Traviata...
@crapfacejoe maybe you are accustomed to tenors with baritonal voice (bergonzi, domingo, corelli...) but many people like tenors with tenorial voice...and Di stefano is the best of them all
@fabriou Actually, my favorite tenor is Lanza. He's no baritone and some people even claim he's not even a tenor since he didn't make a career out of it.
@crapfacejoe strange....i like lanza very much....and i don't accept that he was sayd not to be a real tenor...but ...sorry...he had a very bad diction and pronunciation...but vocally sayd i like him...even if Di Stefano is much superior.
@fabriou C'mon now, Lanza could blow Di Stefano off the stage with his voice. There is no comparison. If you're saying Di Stefano is more technically sound, then I am in complete agreement with you. Achieving technical perfection like Bjorling for example does not make you more superior. Natural voice come first always and all other qualities or assets follow.
@crapfacejoe if we had to judge tenors from a point of view of power and blowing off then the winner would be other tenors like Corelli...much more than Di stefano and Lanza together...but I don t like Corelli at all because for me , power of sound and showing off such power are not important...
I mean Art of singing on the whole...from THIS point of wiev Di Stefano "blew off" the stage Lanza, Corelli and Del Monaco together....
@fabriou Not trying to change your mind, but ur mixing art with technical talent. The ability to express passion in opera accompanied by a magnificent voice trumps all. Granted, u cannot be a tenor without good degree of technical talent, but the performer doesn't need to achieve technical perfection as say the composer. Pavarotti and Domingo were better technicians than Lanza and Gigli, but who would you rather listen to? Just for the record, I would choose Di Stefano every time over Pavarotti.
@crapfacejoe so...I understand you agree with my opinion...and I with yours...by the way...Di Stefano sayd in two radio interwiews that I have, that Lanza was one of his favourite tenors of all time and Pippo was disappointed about the Snobbery on Lanza.
hey can I join in the argument?.....heck no, I'll enjoy the music instead :)

Так петь мог только Д.ДиСтефано. Очень яркий, близкий звук. Он пел на распахнутой груди. Необыкновенной красоты тембр голоса. Выдающийся певец.
