You can get it in southwestern Peru and northern Chile. I've never tried it, but I'd like to. I took peyote (which contains mescaline -- the same hallucinogen found in San Pedro) once about 15 years ago. A vey good friend and I took it and spent the day climbing to the top of a mountain near the valley where he lived in southern Oregon. It was a perfect day . . . I'm glad I spent it with him and Mescalito. It's a presence, a teacher, difficult to describe, but very helpful and wise. *****

Mescaline, either synthetic or organic (such as occurs in the hallucingenic cacti) is an excellent choice for a first trip. It has a warm, rosy, happy feel to it, and bad trips / paranoid reactions are very rare. As always, set and setting are key. Do it a a time when you feel good, in a beautiful place, with people you know well and trust. You don't even have to go through any vomiting -- peel the outer skin off of the peyote (easy if it's fresh) and hold it in your mouth a long time. Yes!

The cactus is legal to own in the US as long as you promise you don't have the intent to consume the psychoactive chemical mescaline. A more popular source of said chemical is peyote. Having consumed a few peyote buttons in my late teens, I have some first-hand suggestions: DON'T EAT IT and DON'T FUCKING EAT IT. It's not a "spiritual journey", it's a drug trip, and holy shit can they freak you out. Seriously, my favorite part was the vomiting right before the eight-hour mind-fuck.

When I was three years old, my dad got a cactus plant(a big one)from CA and now I'm 33 and he still has that same cactus plant in his house and four years ago he broke a few pieces from that plant, replanted them and now my wife and I have a very healthy cactus plant of our own. The life-span of these plants are amazing. I know it sounds funny, but the cactus plant my dad got thirty years ago has become apart of our family. We never named it though...lol
