  • WHat??? I have heard people going crazy about how difficult these are to take down. If people have a hard time with this, I don't know what to say... What are you shooting??? I just looked at this video to see what was involved, to consider for a new .22 pistol, and that looks like a breeze to take apart compared to, say, stripping my lever action .30-30, and I have been doing that since I was a kid.

  • How was that difficult? That seems like a durable and well-built system as every review says it is. Thank you for this video, I was wondering what all the hype was about. I will be purchasing one of these soon.

  • Honestly if this is to difficult for people to disassemble/reassemble I'm not so sure they should be operating the firearm period. Every gun owner should have a Ruger MK pistol that's how great these little shooters are.

  • haven't bought this gun yet but I am about to, especially after watching this. one of my major scares was assembly for cleaning but with this video that fear is gone. Thank you very much!

  • I have a new Mark III 22-45. I stripped it down last night and cleaned it really good since I shot about 500 rounds through it. I got it all back together. However, The bolt is jammed up. I took it apart 2 or 3 times more, put it all back together and the bolt is still stuck and will not move. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I did not buy yet was told it was a bear i am telling you you are a very clear in the instruction it looks easy....the way you do it...fingers crossed i book marked the video

  • Very interesting! Have an old FN Browning 7.65 (=.32) and when I have time, so I will show disassembly/assembly of that old military pistol.

    Greetings :-)

  • Very nice video, I am picking up my Ruger22/45 Stainless next week, I can hardly wait to shoot it, and take it apart.

  • This is a HUGE help for someone who just aquired one of these pistols.

  • I can't get the mainspring out. It doesnt pull with all the force and weight. Great video though. Any thoughts.

  • @Athiestnova First, it is a .22LR (Long Rifle) pistol, which is not sufficient for home defense. A bare minimum for HD is .32ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol), .380Auto, or .38 Special. Buy a shotgun instead. And for a license, most states do not require a permit to own a handgun, keep it in your home, or take it to the range, if you wish to carry it outside your home, then a carry permit is required. My state (MN) requires a permit to purchase to buy a handgun or military style rifle.

  • Just got my own Ruger Mark III yesterday and took it to the range this morning; it's a great gun. The first dis-assembly and assembly was a pain, any pointers on how to make it more manageable? Your video was very helpful, and for that, I thank you.

  • That is by far the best disassembly and assembly of the ruger mark III I've seen so far. Nicely done and thank you so much for sharing that with us. Just a quick question, did you modify anything in your pistol to make it come apart and be able to assemble back in such a smooth and quick manner. Again, thanks and please keep posting. Thumbs up for me.

  • does that have a polymer lower?

  • Great video, thanks! Disassembly was a piece of cake. Reassembly was tricky - the bolt pin would NOT seat all the way. Fortunately, it's easy to make a "non-marring hammer" with duct tape: fold up a nice thick square of it, then tape that square over the head of the hammer with another strip of tape and voila. A couple gentle taps and I was done. Hopefully after a few weeks that pin will loosen up a bit and I won't need to fool with that any more.

  • Your vid is epic. I disassembled my mk111 hunter in no time. Perfection.

  • video was great ... I had same issues as you all but I wasn`t following it exactly as shown.....when the barrel is on table when you put pin in and then pointing it toward sky to finish the install ...... what took me a couple hrs and just by luck doing it right now only takes a minute or so to do whole assembly ..... grreat video ... thanks again

  • i like mine better as a paper weight

  • Simple and straight forward. I have to look at it every time I try to put the gun back together

  • I had to grease this gun up and beat it to death with a rubber mallet. Took me a week! Finally had to rest the trigger guard on something solid and let loose on it from the back.

  • the pin pops out every time I move that last piece down. What am I doing wrong?

  • Good job!

  • Thank you! What took me almost an hour the first few times. Now i can do it in less then 5 minutes! Big Help!

  • Thanks for this video. Very helpful!

  • a miserable gun....I took mine apart after its first 500 rounds, cleaned it up

and went to put it back together and now the trigger wont fire so I go to take it apart and the thing wont even come apart again, the bolt stop pin wont even swing backwards anymore...its all jammed up.......what a stupid design

  • @excelerater ...

  • @excelerater im having the same issue did you ever figure it out

  • @excelerater I have got the same problem with my ruger mark 3 can you tell me how you got yours fixed ?

  • @lemoore31 I didnt,I had a ruger geek slap it back together and called it a day,ill clean again in 500000 rounds LOL

  • Every time I shoot my 22/45 I always forget how to put it back together and I have cussed it time after time. Thanks for putting this video out there!

  • what is the point of this gun ???? military

  • Looks like a Nambu. Any connection between the two?

  • @DoryokuFiripin actually yeah ....the Nambu was the inspiration for this gun ....look it up

  • @TheJasonDR Thanks for the heads up. I had a feeling it was inspired by the Nambu. My dad kept on insisting it was inspired by the Luger.

  • @DoryokuFiripin no Ruger ...after ww2 got his hands on 2 nambu pistols from a marine ....and he invented the Ruger Mark I which is the coolest looking one ... and its like the Luger but alot thinner cuz of the tiny bullet

  • @TheJasonDR Can't wait to get my hands on one!!!

  • Great video. I'm thinking about getting a MK III 22/45 and have also heard that it was a PITA to break down to clean. You made it seem easy. Looks like I definitely will get one now!!!! My friend have a MK II and it shoots great.

  • Shouldn't dry fire rimfire pistols......

  • @larukulunaseas Ruger pistols are designed to be dry fired safely. There is a pin inside the gun that keeps the firing pin from hitting anything that could damage it or the rest of the gun.

  • thanks for posting this because my local gunshop owner wouldnt shut up about the dificulty involved in this process but i purchased it anyway and can't wait to shoot it

  • I,m on mysecond one of these pistols, and love it. Tehy eat anything, and shoot great. Wish I worked at ruger, Id have one of everything. There is NO need to spend a lot of money on foreign made guns.

  • Helps a lot,

  • great video

  • Thanks for sharing. Manual is ok but video is better.

  • Quick follow up, I bought the mark 3 a day ago and you're video really helped me break it down. Better than ruger did. Thanks.

  • you show its much easier than people make it out to be. Nice vid. I have the 10/22 right now, but was looking to purchase a mark iii, base model. I've been on ruger's site, but the prices seem online are more expensive than the store ones. How much did this particular model set you back? thanks

  • this video helped me a lot, My dad gave me the mk III competition model for my bday and i love it

  • Nice job, I too don't find this as complicated as people say. The barrel on mine needs a light tap off and on but I tap it against my desk; occasionally the hammer spring has to be wiggled around to align but that isn't rocket science...nice video.

  • Thanks for the video! I was stuck with the bolt release part when reassembling!

My gun is new and some parts were pretty tight, but this is much easier than some people make it out to be!

  • Easy my ass. Simple yes, but I had to use a hammer for things you just did with your hands more than once. Maybe it's easy after loosening it up, but this was very misleading.

  • Haha, at the end i thought you messed up and pulled the bolt clean out!

  • Best dis/reassemble vid i've seen so far, nice job. I'm going to get one of these once my license goes through.

  • Thank you, thank you thank you thank you. There are so many of these videos which make the reassembly process so complicated. Just cleaned my Mk III and reassembled it, thanks to your video, in a matter of seconds. Again, thank you so much!

  • they should make these pistols in larger calibers. Then i'd buy them because they'd be so cheap to manufacture.

  • Great vid !! ....just what i was looking for before shooting mine the first time .

  • Very misleading video. Let me put it this way. The instructional manual recommends using a hammer to remove the barrel from the grip/trigger assembly.

Reassembly to get the pin back in I found to be impossible. Not just a little hand strength is required. I tried my trusty plastic mallet: that warped the barrel. Then I pounded the f***er with a real hammer. $319 down the drain.

    Ruger, you suck.

  • WTH lol handle it like a man u know whats a man mean ? dont make it slip and so fraid to handle it

  • Thank you.

  • I had to beat the living shit out of mine with a hammer to get the barrel off. There is no way they should have made it so tight.

  • It really is not that easy. I've field stripped plenty of guns, and this is by far the most difficult. I don't know why some say you should put 500+ rounds in to "break it in". I wanted to remove the factory oil before shooting, like with most new guns. It truly was a pain in the ass. I even took it to a Ruger dealer and they have issues. The dealer told me to rarely clean it. The real issue is with the mainspring housing (the first part of disassemble and last for reassemble).

  • The more you do it the easier it gets.

  • It's funny, I hear people say "don't take those ruger mk's apart, you'll never get it back together"... haha, I bought mine maybe 4 years ago and immediately brought it home to clean it...

  • @ridder1705 Yep same. They are a huge bitch the first couple times tho!

  • IT SO EEZY

  • Good video, you definitely know your gun well and show everyone how easy it is to field strip

  • Firearms should NEVER need a tool to field strip.

  • @smartbomb33

lol Ruger Mk series pistols are considered one of the most accurate target pistols straight from the factory...

  • @ridder1705 Yeah, it is. It shoots well... which is a shame.

  • @smartbomb33 You don't need a tool, u can use anything to hook that lever out, I guarantee you, any situation where you have time to field strip a weapon, you will have something to get that out. A finger will do if you're desperate enough. If theres not a rush, a shoelace or anything like that will do fine. I promise it's not an issue. :)

  • @Skormm I need a wooden dowel to pop the mainspring housing out, and it's damn near impossible for me to remove the barrel from the frame without a mallet. It's a nightmare to disassemble.

  • I wish I could say it was this easy. I'm stuck at the part where I have to remove the mainspring housing. It's stuck. I've yanked on it as hard as I possibly could, and it won't budge, and I don't have anything I can hammer it down with from the top without marring the pistol.

... I give up. Not too sure how I'm gonna get it out. Good job Bill Ruger, you designed a pistol that's stupidly hard to disassemble. The fact that you'd even need something like a paperclip is stupid enough.

  • Man I am so damn happy right now.....I've had my gun disassembled for 5 months and no one I knew could figure out the trigger pull trick, even the local gunsmith said he wouldn't mess with my pistol, thanks alot I really do appreciate it.

  • Thats just breaking it down. What they mean't by don't pull it apart is the other parts further in the trigger mechanism. Thats the tough shit to put back together. Anyone can break a gun down how about breaking it completely down and showing us how to put it back together.

  • Nice informative video. They really are sweat pistols that are very reliable. I shoot my cousin's every once in a while.

  • From Ruger

Q - Can I dry fire my Mark III pistol?

A - Yes. The Mark III has a firing pin stop that prevents the firing pin from contacting the rear of the barrel and damaging the edge of the chamber. If you are going to dry fire the pistol extensively, the stop pin and firing pin will eventually wear and contact could occur, and we recommend replacing both the firing pin and the firing pin stop from time to time. You should also monitor the contact of the firing pin with the rear of the barrel.

  • Good video. I have had a Ruger MKI for about 35 years and had the usual 'growing pains' taking it down when new. I just bought a new MKIII and thought it would be tough. It was a piece of cake! It came right apart and went back together fine. Thanks for the video anyway, even though I didn't need it!

  • Great video! Thanx!

    Keith

  • Oh my god!!!!! I can't get the receiver to slide all the way back on the frame so I can't get the pin through...

  • Ya it doesn't seem that hard to disassemble. Two things about this gun that I wish were different are the chamber indicator and the fact you can't load a round without the mag

  • Thanks. Of all of the videos posted (MkIII) this is the easiest to understand.

    Good presentation.

  • Very well done video, thank you.

  • you should stress that you have to point the gun up and shake it ,to make sure the little hangy-down piece that is on the bottom of the hammer is in position to catch in part that locks everything together.if that part does not catch in the correct notch the gun will not funtion.you can tell if everything is right, if the last quarter inch before it locks in, will feel springy just before it snaps into the back of the grip.thanks for posting this video.

  • this is the best video ever good job

  • Thanks for the video.

I was having the "bolt only going halfway back" problem.

I think the trick is the pulling the trigger and pointing the gun up or down as reddog2087 demonstrates in thsi video.

  • thanks Watched the ruger video 5 times. no can do. got on the first time with your video. you are the man

  • Is that a polymer lower frame?

  • does "white firing" ruin rimfire weapons?

    sry for my bad english

  • Thank you for the video - I kept getting hung up because the hammer strut was caught up behind the cross pin. With that out of the way, the reassembly is easy.

  • Getting the receiver/barrel off when the pistol is new is, quite frankly, a real bitch. You really need to give the receiver some good whacks (on the rear where the bolt goes) with a rubber mallet for the bloody thing to slide off the frame.

  • Struggled for an hour trying to reassemble my new Mark III Target. I was watching the vid directly off Ruger's website. I found this one and had my gun back together on the first try. Thanks.

  • Thanks so very very much, great video, I also have a SW M41 and it was easy but I could not figure out my MK III Hunter without your video, your the man!!!

    Stef

  • Thanks. I needed this video.

  • EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THIS: Make sure the firing pin stop is in place in the side of the bolt before re-assembly. If not, your gun will become junk when you discharge a cartridge. Just an FYI. Great vid.

  • Great vid. thanks! I'm getting my ruger as soon as I can earn $300. I will definitely refer back to this video

  • I agree takes about 1000 round for this tight beauty. I have to work mine a lot to beable ot disasmble without a wood hammer to get the barrel off. And depending on how hot it is and how much fireing Ive done between cleanings . I still sometimes have to tap the back of the barrel assembly to get it off.

  • hey can someone help me. i took my ruger apart to clean and when i was putting the main spring housing back together i put the pin in the wrong hole. the bolt only goes back halfway and i cant get the mainspring housing out. can somoene please help me

  • @sylram8

hey did you have any luck, i've had mine apart three times, fourth time i missed a step and now it's jammed ....arrrgghhhh!!!!

  • @noreaster08 i took mine to a gunsmith and he fixed it in seconds no cost. then when i got home it would not shoot so i had to take to take it apart again and noticed the hammer was up. the gun smith put it together wrong but now it works fine.

  • if u dont mind me asking? bout how much one of these puppies cost?

  • great demo thank god someone knows there guns on youtube

  • A no-nonsense how to without the blaring music or ghetto talk, thank you!

I just purchased a 22/45 MKIII with the stainless bull barrel and synthetic grip frame. It hasn't even been fired yet. I like to practice field stripping a new gun before taking it out and must say that this was the most difficult I have ever done.

My hands are raw right now!

It took me four tries to disassemble/reassemble this gun before I got it right. It does get easier though.

  • OFTEN SHOOT 4 TO 5 DAYS A WEEK MARK III TARGET IS THE GUN I OFTEN SHOOT. PAID 150.00 NEW. I HAVE SHOT THIS GUN WELL OVER 27,000 TIMES (550 VALUE PACKS FINISHED PACK 50) THIS GUN WORKS GREAT, VERY FEW HANGS, AND I OFTEN GO TWO WEEKS AND SEVERAL 1000'S OF ROUNDS BETWEEN CLEANING. BY FAR THE MARK .22 ARE THE BEST .22 CAL PISTOLS ON THE MARKET. I WAS WANTING TO FIND OUT JUST HOW MANY ROUNDS THE MARK III WILL SHOOT BEFORE IT REQUIRES A REBUILD ETC... OR WHAT THE BARREL SERVICE LIFE IS.

  • Thanks! I've been debating the MKIII target vs. the Buck Mark. My concern was everyone's horror stories of bringing the gun back in a paper sack because it could not be reassembled!

I feel SO much better now!

    RP

  • Very helpful. Thanks!

  • Thx reddog, very happy with this manual :), regards. F C

  • wow, doesn't get much simpler than that. thanks for making this video.

  • great work I tried reassemly from the manuel and after an hour with no evail I searched youtube and came up with your video, great work

  • Good video. Just picked up the same pistol and this video clarified what is in the Ruger manual. Pretty easy once you do it a few times, but breaking these guns down is different from the other autoloaders I shoot (Glocks and a 1911), so it helps to have a visual.

  • I highly recommend you look to be absolutely sure the chamber is empty before pulling the trigger, it is possible to work the bolt several times and think its unloaded when it might not be. You might normally check visually and just didn't in this video, but you didn't mention a visual check, you don't want to have a negligent discharge under any circumstances!

  • why would my main spring housing would stick after i flipped the lever? for some reason it won't come out. then after i pulled on it a little and pushed it back in i pulled the hammer back i tried to release it and it wont go back without me pushing it back in.

  • THESE guns are ridiculous to field strip. AN AWESOME gun however, but SCREW taking it apart. Toothbrush it!

  • Very nice video!! Thanks. I am getting this for my brother as a training gun for gun safety and some target hunting.

  • is the frame made of plastic? say it aint so :(

  • I took a mark 1 (or standard if you prefer the original name) redhawk apart once. That little horsheshoe piece that holds the return spring in place went flying off into the abyss. Took me almost 8 years to take it to a gunsmith and fix it.

  • Thanks very much for the vid, making it a straightforward process. So many people carry on about how difficult it is, but you dispell that myth easily.

I am picking up my new MK III in a couple of days and I will be referring back to this vid when it comes time to clean it.

I've heard that it takes around 300 to 500 rounds to break this in, what was your experience with it? You said you had no problems with it at all, I'm hoping for the same. How soon do you recommend cleaning it? Thanks

  • @cromeister777 Thanks for the compliment

I waited untill about 1000 rounds, just because of how tight these guns are when there new. My Ruger now having about 10000 rounds through is much looser now. Good luck!

  • seth rogan?

  • does the saftey have to be off or somthing? I have the raget model.. and the main spring houseing doesnt come out for some reason.

  • @Judokkaa yeah nevermind...

  • Good video......that's as far as I ever need to take down my pistol for cleaning.......thank you very much!

  • @nifepartie Its a feild strip dumbass...

  • @nifepartie Actually, that's a proper disassembaly of that gun. You are STRONGLY cautioned (unless you are a gun expert) not to take apart the bolt except for the recoil spring, and do not take apart anything in the frame of the gun. You don't need to anyway, just spray some powder blast in the frame to get all the gunpowder and shit out, and oil the gun inside and outside lightly using something like Barricade or any firearm lubrication. That is a proper field strip, good job my friend.

  • @nifepartie do you know anything about guns sonny? He did disassemble the gun. all that was really left was the trigger housing. so brush up on your guns, boy

  • @nifepartie you're a douche

  • great video well put together and straight forward, thanks for the info

  • what ammo do you shoot through it, im picking up the identical model in a few weeks

  • This video makes it easy to be able to clean this gun. By far the best and easiest demonstration of how to take it apart and get it back together with no frustration. Thanks!!!!

  • Great video, saved me like a lot of time

  • Awesome video, just got mine today and I can't wait to shoot it.

  • mine has been apart several times and still require a smack with a mallet to release the barrel.i find pulling the trigger while installing mainspring also helps.

  • Great! Thanks a lot!

  • Way better than the Ruger video, although it sounds like you might need the dowel and

rubber mallet handy on the new ones.

  • Thank you so much for this review. I had some bad ammo that failed to fire but otherwise it has been a fun gun. I HATE breaking this gun down- it sucks the mighty long worm. My Walther P22 was infinitely easier to disassemble but not near so accurate.

  • I'm picking mine up in a couple days. This video is VERY HELPFUL. Thank you so much. Hey, if you have a Taurus 24/7 could you do a assembly/disassembly video for that too.

  • So thats the blued finish? I'm getting this gun no doubt, but I'm debating whether to get the blued finish with only adjustible rear sights and miss out on the stainless with both sights ajustable... but the blued is 100+ bucks cheaper.... I dont think this gun would ever be near water and rust but eh.. what would you recommend reddog?

  • Great video ... glad you posted it . 1 thing , if i may .. you should never dry fire a 22 . but good vid .

  • you have too inorder to dissasemble...

  • @RedDog2087 get a snap cap there like 5 bucks 4 a 3 pack

  • @huntingohiozs

can you do a video with snap caps? thanks

  • @binmai00 i really would if i had a camera snap caps basiclly go in the chamber and make it safe to dryfire your gun

  • @RedDog2087 the manual for this gun says that there's a firing pin stop that must be installed before dry firing or it will dent the rear end of the chamber, making the gun useless. Is this true or is it an exaggeration?

  • @RedDog2087 You can put a dumby round in though

  • @makokill1

I actually heard this is not an issue with the Mark 3. This is a comment by Ron2Me on another YouTube channel. Haven't checked it out for myself though: "You may already know this by now but the Mark III can actually be dryfired without hurting it because there is a cross pin in in the bolt assembly that stops the firing pin from impacting the breech face when dry fired. I think I am explaining the terms accurately. I actually called Ruger Technical at factory to verify this"

  • @makokill1 Ruger says it is okay to dryfire the MK-III on their website, they have some features inside that allow it to be dryfired without issues.

  • Much better than the bozo with the "Cheese" and "Dingleberry" and wood hammer crap.

  • Very helpful. Thanks!!

  • Dude, you rock. This was way more helpful than the official Ruger youtube video.

  • Thanks man!

  • can you send me a link of that ruger video?

  • I can't pull the little lever down on the back strap to removed the main spring if the mag is in place.

    AND

I cannot pull the trigger if the mag is NOT in place.

    my serial number is 228-XXXX

maybe they did some extra safety BS in late production.

  • everyone should watch 3:00 - 3:45 over and over again.

I failed to do that once and had to dissemble the lower. And bent a spring in the process.

    5 stars

  • Thanks so much, I refer to this every time I put mine back together, you're a real life-saver!

  • How does that polymer frame feels like? The polymer frame was the deal breaker for me and made me go with the Buckmark which has an aircraft grade aluminum alloy frame. Yeah, I know there are many good handguns with polymer frames, but for some reason I don't like them, it makes them look and feel cheap... I like metal, it gives the gun character.

  • Thanks, Man....I took my new MKIII apart for cleaning & could not put it back together. after viewing your video-using the pause/rewind button often- I got it back together. thanks, again Norbel718

  • I had a couple of problems, now im stumped. So I couldnt separate the upper from the lower no matter how i tried to work it or how much force I used. I cleaned the bolt and put everything back together. Now the mainspring wont swing all the way open and the pin at the top wont budge, also with the magazine in the bolt stays locked back and it is also tough to cycle the bolt. any ideas?

  • Just bought the same gun....completely identical.... cant wait!

  • im havin a problem puttin that thing that you put in last, back in the gun. i can get it in but it wont let me fold it into the gun. what should i do?

  • The main spring housing... make sure the bolt stop pin is all the way through the top of the upper barrel assembly. If it wont go in, give it a quick smack with a plastic hammer. Then it should feed itself in. If that wont work, then back up and start over. Pointing the gun up and down while pulling the trigger is key. Some times a little shake can help 3:33. Good Luck!

  • hey man thanks! once i pointed it up and pulled the trigger it went right back in place

  • Glad I could help

  • Good vid, thanks. "Don't be afraid of your guns" excellent advice.

  • Thanks. I was really having a problem getting it back together!

  • thx man great video

  • to unload and decock this gun are you forced to dry fire all the time? there some sort of decocker? cuz i know dry firing a rim fire gun can damage the firing mechanism.

  • Like everything else in life, it is easy once you learn how to do it. The tipping up and down of the gun is key in re-assembly, very helpful video.

  • Thanks for the video! I've been debating trading in my Walther P22 for either a Ruger Mark III or a Buck Mark, but was intimidated by the online posts about how hard disassembly and reassembly is for the Ruger. Looks like a piece of cake after a few runs, looks like I have a winner! =D

  • Glad I could sway your vote, welcome to the Ruger rimfire club! You wont be dissapointed.

  • Indeed, thanks again for the video! =D
