Rotating away from the right bucket will feel like your hips open in front. Rotating behind the left bucket will feel like there is some resistance or a measure of control. You can release left in both cases without cutting across it.
The drills are multi-purpose. I use them for myself mainly to work on freedom in my hip joints. I feel like the leg on the bucket maintains stability as I rotate through the ball. The different sound merely reflects how the ball was compressed.
Set up with your stance in such a way as your knees are square despite one foot being raised. Closed when it's under you right, open under the left.
