Oh please, racism isn't going anywhere so we have every right to "complain" and "whine" when something is offensive. This is not funny and would only be funny if those girls were First Nations, then I could see the humour in having them dress like that. Gotta love knowing there are so many small minded ignorant people still out there. Go educate yourself.
@shawncateyez I agree people have the right to protest, as stated before tho I always considered this song in this stage production/film to be making fun of the stereotypical views of non-native Americans at the time rather than of attacking the natives and also believe that it can be highly beneficial to not overly sensor media as the resulting discussion can highlight persisting stereotyping and prejudice through constructive discussion.
This is one of the best numbers inthe show. If I ever direct it, i will leave this number in. It is called entertainment. Whatrecording is thins from. the voices do not sound familiar....
Grow a sense of humor people. There is nothing racist about this number. It is simply a silly song in a musical. You've been brainwashed by the PC (politically correct) police and think your objections make you more sensitive and sympathetic than the rest of us. Climb down off your high horse and learn to laugh for God's sake.
Yet again the PC Nazis chime in with the usual tripe about 'racism'. One almost feels sorry for those losers who sit around just waiting to be offended by one thing or another. If a 60 year old song hurts your feeling -GET OVER IT! Life is too short to waste it being a career victim.
In response to a couple of posts expressing concern regarding issues of racism I have felt the need to post regarding this issue in relation to this routine. I do not work for the Academy in any way shape or form and am simply a parent of a couple of students attending it who helps out from time to time with internet stuff.
I am strongly opposed to racism and indeed reverse racism but never viewed Annie Get your Guns as an attack on Native Americans, I always saw it as an attack on Hollywood, deliberately lampooning the ridiculous stereotyping that prevailed at the time (and to an extent still prevails at times). Indeed it was this song, in the film version of the stage production that made me question everything regarding Native American culture and the image portrayed in Westerns.
@CLJAcademy As a result I studied the history and culture extensively and not only developed a strong respect for the beliefs and cultures but have also taken aboard many of their teachings as a result, incorporating them heavily into my own beliefs.
@CLJAcademy I am sure I am not alone in this, particularly when there is such a strong prevalence of Native American art and literature so prevalent on the UK high streets far beyond the amount you would find of European Cultures such as the Celt's and Pagans let alone those of any other Nation.
I am sure I can speak for all at the Academy in expressing our deepest apologies to all who have taken offence to this video and the staging of this routine and can assure non was intended.
This is child abuse. How can you in the 21st Century in a "civilized" country teach children to mock another people's culture. If you want to give the kids an "Indian" lesson, hire a pow-wow drum group and teach these beautiful little girls the Fancy Shawl Dance or Jingle Dress Dance.
This is SOOOO WRONG!!!! On so many levels.... the broadway song is bad enough, this dance number is highly offensive! It's got every sterotype in the book. Do people really still think this way? This is NOT mildly satirical, this an honest opinion from the 1940's and apparently colleges still find this a performance worthy piece. All of these people worked very hard to create this, and i find that disturbing that this many people think it's ok.
@katoya7 This musical is from the 1940's, a highly racist era in American history. If people perform the orignal musical, they include this number...because the scenario it expresses is EXTREMELY important to the plot of the movie. Just as a heads up, however, the 1999 "revival" of Annie Get Your Gun removed this song from its playlist...so people recognize the racism of the song, they just presented the original in order to tell the story as accurately as possible.
