Thanks Mate, Great tutorial, but when it comes up to the sharing part, (trying to send the cd file) my laptop says that i don't have permission and i need to ask the administrator for permission, can you please tell me how to get that to go away? because they are both my computers.
Are you using WinXP? If so, when you share the drive and or folders, are you checking, "allow network users to change my files"?
Make sure also that you're sharing the root drive, and not a directory on the drive. Ensure that you enable sharing without a CD in the drive. You may also need to be logged in as an administrator if user accounts might be restricted from sharing resources.
If none of this works, hit me up and we'll get to the bottom of it.
Hello, i tried every thing that you said, but my computer on't let me log in as an administrator, i've pused cntrl+alt+dlte and every thing. but my acer still won't let me into the shared file, even though it says shared on my computer, it dosn't say it on my acer? really wiered.
Good video for those who don't know how to network drives and directories. Well done on the production value too.
I was wondering if you knew of a way to use the networked drive as a DVD burner. Reason being, upon first using the Acer Aspire, it wants to make backup DVDs to an optical drive. I'm sure there's a way to trick it into thinking this is an optical drive. Any ideas?
First, try putting the documents in a folder and sharing that folder, instead of sharing the files. It's likely that you will not see shared files in an unshared folder. Let me know.
Hi..can I use this method for installing windows xp on my netbook? I have windows 7 on it but I cannot get xp to finish the process using a usb thumb dire. It gets hindered after the first restart after the copying of files
I don't think it will work with an OS install. The reason being, the shared resources are accounted for in the OS itself. Therefore, in the process of an install there will be a point at which the network hasn't been configured, and you'll have to have that to use a shared device remotely over LAN.
Thank you very much for responding! Would you be able to show me how to install xp using my usb flash drive? I have tried one tutorial I found on youtube using wintoflash but I get a message after the files are done copying and the computer restarts. That is where it all stops working. I really need to get xp on my acer aspire one 11.6.Thanks
I've never done it myself, so I'm probably not the best person to assist with that.
However I do know this; after you boot to the USB and it goes through the install process, it will reboot, and that is where you're having trouble right? During the reboot, go into bios and change the boot device to C instead of the USB. That's what I would try. Let me know.
thanks! man! ur good yeah i needed to know how to do this real bad. yeah its true these netbooks are actually a lot stronger than what ppl say. i play 3d games on my asus 1005ha all the time lol its good.
Funny this is about my Aspire One, it's dual core! I know some of the netbooks now have that, but this one is older and shouldn't. It's really bizarre, I've sent screenshots to people that didn't believe me. Guess I'm lucky.
Another question for you. :) I read in the manual these units have a 3G capability apparently where you pull out the battery. You can install a Sim card there. What would I use this for? Data transmission only? Just wondering if it's something I'd use for school and what not. Thanks!
Greetings! I got my Netbook about a week ago and used your video to load some prgs for school onto it and it worked like a charm! I have the Aspire One 10.1 also and I love it! I have a question about firmware. I had ran across an article talking about how loud the fan was, (not too bad in my opinion!) and that there is supposed to be a firmware update to help remedy the problem. Have you heard anything about that? I'd love to get it and update my little baby. Thanks again and Happy Easter!
The thing is, the only way that it's going to lower the noise of the fan is if it slows the fan down. I worry about this because this netbook is not well ventilated and gets very hot as it is. Lowering fan speed is not something I would want.
Hi again, oh no I don't mean to lower the fan speed but to actually increase it. I've just did a few searches here on YouTube and there are string of vids about the fan failing and or being noisy and running hot. How long have you had your unit and what have you done to correct any fan issues Mal?
Don't know, I imagine it won't meet system requirements. Just install from the network drive and then leave the CD in there and give it a try. If it does run, it's likely to be very slow.
Can't say for sure. You're going to need some kind of hardware that goes from the VGA to a TV-out friendly signal, and I imagine that the max resolution is going to be dependent upon the scaler used.
The aspire one only has vga out and getting that signal to a television is another story.
this one actually works for me,LiquidWaffle (1 week ago) Magic ISO. put a cd into your desktop pc, and create an ISO image of the cd. then copy the ISO onto your acer aspire. install Magic ISO onto your acer and open the ISO with Magis ISO. magic creates an Virtual drive. (after extracting)
One, typically email attachments are limited in their size and the amount of data taken from the CD would exceed this. Furthermore, many times when installing software the installer will look for the CD in the drive (unless you're installing from an image), and thus will not work.
That's without considering that even if it did work, you'd be sending and receiving 600+MB of data which would take a long time.
sorry about that, I don't use Vista so I'm not sure. However, if you google "share drive in Vista", there are several pages I see outlining details on how to do this.
You'll have to have the systems on a LAN (local area network). Setting up one of these is beyond the scope of this video, but you could google or youtube search "set up a LAN" and are likely to find more information that way.

When you go to install the software, you may select the location of install. By default, this should be on the Aspire, but if not you will be able to change it during the install process.
Probably not, because the interface with the networked drive is based in having an established OS that can be on the LAN and communicate with the drive on the other machine.
whatever you said, might be correct but one thing is sure, Norton sucks bigtime. and there are CD drives which doesn't require extra power cable and are extremely slim like small book.
I don't oppose your words as technology is a very dynamic subject to stay firm
Just got my Aspire One this afternoon. Thanks to your video I have MS Office loading right now. After that, PhotoShop and InDesign. You just saved me a TON of time.
Help. I just got a Acer aspire one and need to install "office" from a CD. My home pc is not networked. I have a wireless network set up for the internet on two home pc but I dont think that is what your taking about correct? what are my options. EASY PLEASE
The home pc's you're referring to, they access the internet through a wireless router correct? If so, then they should be on the network.
If you follow the instructions in the video (share cd drive) and then try to find it on the aspire one (my network places), have you tried that? Are you able to see the cd drive on the aspire?
"so can software be installed (media programmes) via networking?"
yes.
"and do i need one with good harddrive space on it?"
Good space is always better. Are you asking to put XP on the 8 GB solid state drive? You can do it, but there will be very little space for anything else if you do.
ummm wait a second do you have to use both computers everytime if you just want to install one thing onto the acer? cuz i gotta use my other computer to instal something for dazzle plus.
I didn't end up doing the full office install though, I installed just a few of the features. The version I was using was the "blue edition" which upon initiating setup, will try to install every bit of office (which I didn't want), so I ended up just running an individual app to get the things I wanted. Standard editions of Office 2007 will allow you to choose from the start (or should).

which shared folders? If you're talking about moving folders from another system, you could make a shared folder on the Acer the same way you share the CD drive on the main computer, then just copy files/folders over.
Make a folder on the Acer, right click, go to sharing and security, then go from there.
pretty nice.. What Screen Capture software yo use? I have one but the problem is my resolution is so high it looks terrible on the video (it looks fine but I mean when i put it to video) ...
I've had that problem ben, with some software. I used Camtasia for this one and my resolution was at 1680x1050 and it turned out ok. Also, make sure that when you render the file you do it at high settings (at least 2.1m NTSC or higher).
Before I rendered this, in windows movie maker the test was unreadable, but after making the file it turned out ok.
As far as the others, I'm not sure overall how it rates. I know that the price was competitive and it seemed to have equal or better specs for the buck than the others. It also has 1 more USB port than the MSI brand netbook. I chose it for good balance on price/performance. The EEE was definitely overpriced for the specs.
Can't really review the others thoroughly, as I don't have them and probably will never need to get one.
do you know how well it runs photoshop? how would you go about playing dvds? thanks

@cojobo34
Depends upon how it's on the stick. If it's a image (like an ISO), you'll need to mount it with daemon tools (google daemon tools).
If it's just a copy of the disc files, go into the USB stick and find the setup.exe file and run it from there.

Make a folder on the Acer, right click, go to sharing and security, then go from there.

Anytime! I'll be working on some other stuff as I play with the Aspire One, and I'll post some new angles when and if I find them.

pretty nice..

Yes, but can it run Left4Dead? :)
Anyways, Norton sucks, (either patch frequently or use AVG) Office 2007 rules. Good vid.

Even if you could run L4D on it, would you really want to?
Yep, Norton sucks, I don't use any traditional anti-virus, I just wanted the salesman to back off. And guess what. It came with McAffee lol.
Spybot I do definitely have on there though.

When would I not want to run L4D?!
How does the Acer Aspire rate against the Eee PC and alternatives? Why did you choose it? I think that would be a great next vid! :)

Always, just not on this tiny screen heh.
