My recommendation, if you plan to use a vehicle, is to find an older diesel off road vehicle. Make sure it is in good mechanical condition, and ready for rugged terrain. The diesel offers great reliability, as well as fantastic fuel economy and diesel will not be as sought after as gasoline. I have a Toyota Land Cruiser 40 series with a diesel, spring over axle, lockers, winch, etc. and on 35" mud terrains and still get over 30 mpg.  It's part of my contingency plan.

If the shit REALLY hits the fan and an EMP of any sort is released, there's not a worry in the world, since the motor, transmission and every other imaginable component is purely mechanical. The FRS frequencies on those radios are 2 miles but the GMRS frequencies are a higher watt output and may gain about a half mile or more line of sight. What they don't tell you is that you can set up a simplex repeater to get the 25 or more miles they boast about. It requires an FCC license though. May be worth looking into. Some radios have a 5 megahertz split; they transmit on one frequency and receive on another for full duplex repeaters gaining the longer distances.

I highly enrourage you to protect your radio and other electronics from electro magnetic pulse bombs by placing them in a faraday cage. To make a simple faraday cage....wrap the radio in aluminum foil, place it in a plastic freezer bagt for insulation...then place that in a shoe box or other container ALSO wrapped in aluminum foil. A radio that is fried is not good. Also best to get a radio that runs on batteries, solar power, and hand crank.

I have been forming my plan in a more detailed manner recently. I have came to the hard conclusion that there is no one I can trust, so I may be hitting it alone. I have my gear and supplies all together so I can load it all in my truck quickly. I have picked myself out a remote wilderness location on top of a hill, and there just happens to be a old grown over pond there. I scouted it out, and have detailed topographic maps. Once on location I'm digging in, lets not rule out nukes.

Those radios with a 2.5 mile coverage are one of the dumbest SHTF ideas I have ever heard.

For you to understand, it takes seconds to triangulate the position of a radio emitter. You will be basically firing a flare into the sky each time you press the transmit button.

A far better method would be using Morse code or a custom code over a whistle.

For a receiver radio, look up the Kaito brand multipower AM/FM unit.. hand crank/solar/battery/wall power. Be aware that the communications radios he shows here require an FCC lisc.. but for an emergency I would not sweat that. Be aware that there are scanners that can pick up anything you transmit on those FRS units. I prefer encrypted radios but they are expensive and hard to find. Also it's useless to bug out if you do not have a safe location. Stay away from private property!

Also have done some research on natural antibiotics. Garlic, fresh crushed three times a day is supposed to work wonders. They used it I believe during WWII when antibiotics were scarce. The radio is a great idea, but I would reccomend a Kaito or other with the hand crank and also weather band and Shortwave bands. They are compairable in price and readliy available. readymade resources has a good selection. Radio shack also has them.

If you want to "evade" best bet is AM freqs (like i menitoned earlier CB freqs) but it is not foolproof, it just give you more time to communicate. Then you must move your position. Rregardless of which freq you are using...........never communicate from the same spot TWICE, and NEVER, EVER, more than 30 seconds each transmission. Make it half that to be safe. 73's

2 miles on the "family" network for the walkie-t's,correct. I got ones that say "14 mile range" but I think the people who put that on the packages at time of printing were stoned. I got 2 handheld CB radios too, they get out about 2x further than the home or "family" freqs. Privacy codes? , please man, nothings private. AM freqs are the toughest to follow (CB freqs) because they are "mud" (in the world of comms) , which means the way they transmit its like throwing mud on a wall, splatters.

Amateur radio is another option as many repeater sites can be and some are solar powered. It is just a matter of inquiring with the repeater owner what their power source is. My jeep (my BOV) has 5 bands of transceiver, CB inclusive. As many options as possible. I do also own GMRS FRS but that is for around the house, nothing I would depend on in a crises, but it is better than nothing.  Peace brothers.

I custom built a solar charger kit for 12 V with 30 watts of charge capacity fitted into a tool case for easy transport. I have all communications flashlights. lights etc mated with the system. It uses standard car cigarette lighter receptacles and ni cad batts. peace.

I am firm believer in planning for worst case scenarios, such as, total meltdown so electrical devices would eventually become useless (gps, radios, phones, etc) and are nice to haves but make plans around them too .
