Erm, at this point in her life, she had been living in the UK for eight years - of course her accent is going to change to sound more British if that is what she is surrounded by. She's not being fake, she's just doing what comes naturally. For example when I'm speaking to somene who has a strong French Canadian accent I sometimes find myself taking on a bit of the accent without really being aware of it. Or if you have a close friend it is very common for you to adopt a similar laugh or similar maneurisms as them.

she lived in england for quite awhile and that can have an effect on one's way of speaking. i had a british friend living here in canada and to us she sounded british, but her friends back at home would call her up and accuse her of speaking with a 'canadian accent.' her accent was taking on features of canadian english without her even knowing it, and she'd only lived here 4 months. it happens! it's sort of crazy.

I don't see why everyone is so hard on Madonna for her accent. People, when exposed to an accent for a length of time, often pick up on them, simple as that. She's not being fake, she's just doing what comes naturally. For example when I'm speaking to somene who has a strong French Canadian accent I sometimes find myself taking on a bit of the accent without really being aware of it. Or if you have a close friend it is very common for you to adopt a similar laugh or similar maneurisms as them.

Joss Stone was pilloried in the British tabloid press for talking with an American accent after living in the US for a time.
I had a similar problem as a kid in the UK moving from the NE to the SW. My accent didn't fit in anywhere.
You certainly learn who your real friends are under such circumstances.

They'll drift back into their native English or Scottish accents naturally as they become comfortable in the conversation.
