The first song is "Looking Good and Feeling Gorgeous" and the second song at 1:13 is the one I'd REALLY like to know. The third song is Freaxx by Brokencyde. Oh man if someone knew the second song it would rawk! :D
@albiita Look up Amy Sigil Interviews here on youtube... She doesn't label Unmata as any 1 type of dance. Some of there stuff is very bellydance, but a fair amount of it is out there, but that is why we love them :) And she is quite fun to watch in interviews I might add.
I love LOVE these guys - but isn't this more pop/hip hop style than much from oriental dance?(well the first bit really) I'm not trying to start a flame, I'm just asking an honest question! I mean when does it stop being bellydance and start being contemporary dance and vice versa?
@alittlebitofperil Yes, there is a lot of all kinds of other types of dance in Unmata's performances. The art of "bellydance" is constantly being fused with other styles of dance - some of the Bellydance Supertars do routines in pointe shoes, and I can't think of anything less "bellydance" than pointe shoes. The beauty of an art form is that it evolves. Some of the experiments will work and become popular and some of them won't, but it's always a treat to see something as well executed as this.
@Shirasayah - I'm not criticising - but its that old question, of when does it stop being bellydance and is just 'modern dance' - i mean, what people say is 'authentic' (ie, the raqs sharqi stuff) is in itself a fusion of ballet with oriental waaaay back when they started making the egyptian movies. they were influenced by western dancing ,and vice versa. I agree, on pointe isn't very earthed! Although there are many dancers who dance on tip toes in bellydance too.
@alittlebitofperil - you're asking great questions, and I guess the foundation question is "What makes bellydance bellydance?" I've studied and performed ballet, modern, belly dance, jazz, hip hop, and Broadway dance, and I think the use of core muscles as opposed to focusing on limbs is one way that belly dance is distinct from western styles. The longer an art form exists, the more it is experimented on by artists and fused with other existing styles.
@Shirasayah - its interesting to hear that because i've never heard anyone vocalize the difference! I'm a big fan of Mira Betz (i've done her performance intensive which was incredible), and she's passionate about being original (as far as anyone can be!), and not trying to BE something they're not (whether it be copying rachel brice as so many do or anyone else), and to find your own way of moving. I love the core muscle moves of this dance - it suits my way of moving.
@alittlebitofperil I'd love to hear more detail about your experiences and the way you see the changes in bellydance; this forum has a limited amount of space that doesn't allow for details. You can contact me at shirasaya@hotmail.com if you're interested in talking in more detail about the evolution of bellydance and the fusion of art styles - it's refreshing to find someone who's willing to discuss as opposed to rant and you bring up some interesting points I'd like to hear more about!
I always enjoy the high-energy Unmata craziness - this was so different, and I *loved* it. I am . . . emotionally astounded. Never would have expected that from Unmata.
awesome performance, as always! Actually I found this performance gives different vibes from their previous ones and it is amazing how creative they are! I I didn't even spot the girls off stage until a minute later! Love love love it!
I liked the costumes used in this performance: very inventive and different. The runway theme was a fun idea, however, I found the runway girls below and off-stage were really distracting.
I can't ever take my eyes off Amy.. Her stage presence is other wordly.. I love these ladies.. they kill it everytime.
