  • It doesn't get any better than this! Sweet, effortless vocals - HEAVEN!!!

  • The lyrics from 2 of the best voices spoke of a time when strangers could be lovers again. How soon they become enemies these days. Missing: God's direction in the union.

Beautiful music mirroring the beauty of love.

    Thanks Keithbarron.

  • fantastic song!!!

  • Weren't we lucky, growing up with music like this to remember from 50 years ago.

I hope the teenagers nowadays will be as happy with the modern recordings which are mainly guitar music

How it tugs at the heart strings.....

  • childhood days of hearing family members singing this came flooding back, lovely, never thought to hear it again, thanks..

  • I remember once when I was about 15 yrs old I went to a radio show in New York City and in the elevator there was Billy Eckstine, He had the greenist eyes I had ever seen . He was so handsome and pollte and he gave me hs autograph. Was I lucky.

  • on hearing this.......minds float into the past......a big hit in UK....??

  • Regarding the special it took place at the Apollo but for some reason I keep remembering Motown was involved somehow. Eckstine recorded for Motown in his later years, and did a "September of My Years" album titled "The Time of My Life" and recorded a song titled "My Way" which wasn't THAT "My Way." Sassy kept working and traveling and enjoying life to the end. She was never a complicated person or diva.

  • Takes me back. Love these two together. Why don't they sing like this now? The young have missed out on the greats.

  • This song makes a beautiful Waltz. I first heard it on a Ballroom Dancing DVD when Karen and Marcus Hilton gave a Waltz demonstration. I have been looking for it ever since and now I have found it!

  • A beautiful song!!!

  • They just do not make them like this any more.More's the pity. Thanks for posting.

  • The ultimate duet,a Rolls Royce running on double cream, beautiful

  • Such an exquisite moment in recording history! They sang it in their elder years on a Motown anniversary special and were just as compelling. They were lifelong friends; he was her discoverer and her mentor. He was very proud of her and the way she conducted her life. No scandals. Very close to her mom and dad and her daughter Paris.

  • @waynebrasler Are u sure it was the Motown anniversary special or Apollo? for i saw them on the Apollo 50th anniversary special in 1985 i have a video clip of it

  • my mum used to sing tghis to me when I was little with the windows open as she did stuff in the kitchen with the windows open wide on a hot summer's day and the neighbours always usedf to say they stood still when she sung as you copuld hear it so far away

I'm sixty next year and I can still remember looking up at her and marvelling as she sang this, Slow Boat to China, Que Sera, Sailor (stop your roaming) and other classics

  • Kids (young son and daughter) love listening to Sarah Vaughan in the car - I often sing along in this duet and the kids just love it!

  • Love this song !! <3 Thank you for sharing XX

  • This is one of my all time favourite recordings and it always brings tears to my eyes when listening to it. It's so beautiful and the memories of growing up in the 1950's and listening to music like this on the radio...fantastic! Sarah Vaughan is one of my favourite singers, and Billy Eckstine was the perfect partner for this song. thanks for posting it.

  • They couldn't have put two more perfect people for this duet! LOVE IT!!

  • this song is SO REAL! what a DUET!

  • Class! i was a toddler when i first heard this... Fantastic

  • wow, what a great couple! goosebumps all the way!!!

  • Pure magic...you can't beat this...memories flooding back of the glories of radio and the magical world that wonderful music creates...painting glorious images in the imagination.

  • The passing of time cannot distract from two beautiful voices and a gentle carressing song ,thankyou you so much for this beautiful song xx

  • 06/17/10 WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SONG TO TELL THE STORY OF TWO SOULS WHO DID NOT INITIALLY CONNECT BUT WHO WISH TO DO SO. BEAUTIFUL LYRICS, BEAUTIFUL INTERPRETATION. GOD REST YOUR BEAUTIFUL SOULS. roselli

  • I enjoyed this!

  • Fantastic..another timeless classic....I grew up with my parents singing these songs.

  • This fantastic song reminds me of growing up in Manchester in the fifties/sixties. My mother use to sing along with in at weekends; forces favourites, radio 2..I think.

Was the World a better place then?

  • @MrMass1234

I think that would have been the BBC Light Programme and as for your question - you bet your life it was.

  • Bring them back! RIP, 2 Icon's of love

  • This is about as good as it gets.....surely would welcome something this beautiful to come along again. Lovely song that is so perfectly performed. Thanks for posting!

  • BEAUTIFUL....what a wonderful duet from two of the best singers ever. Thanks for posting this, I love it.

  • This beautiful classic was introduced to me by my Uncle who lived in the East side of London its has stayed with me for ever.

  • Had this on CD...it was in my car and stolen...along with the car!!!!!

  • Mi padre , que fue un padre ausente toda mi vida ,lo unico que me dejo es un incontenible amor por el Jazz.

    Algo es algo

  • my mum and her brother used to sing this in clubs in the 50s - mum and uncle colin - sing together again xx

  • My dear mum and dad, when i hear this it reminds me of you both so much, you used to play this so often, how the years fly by.....love you both so much and even though i don't see you both as much since i moved away, i miss and think about you every day......bittersweet memories that make the heart ache.

  • @SuzieEyes Give them the flowers now!

  • Wonderful memories recalled -from these greats.

  • You are right...Mr. B. sounds no more like Brook Benton than Barry white sounds like Issac Hayes. They are all baritones and that's the long and the short of it!!

  • WOW! that is all I can say WOW! I have never heard this song in my life, automatic FAVOURITE!

  • @usaTrini You are now a very lucky usaTrini - enjoy this marvellous music - it knocks spots off today's stuff!

    Love and peace, Ken.

  • Fabulous does music come any better

  • This was the first record I ever bought for my future wife. We've now been happily married for 46 yrs. This song still makes my hair stand on end. Wonderful stuff from "Sassy" and the immaculate Billy Eckstine. What class, what style, what handsome looks this guy had. My role model.

  • Excellent recordings. Sets a fabulous mood, very nice, good listening. It's odd that I now find Mr. B was a much bigger influence on my musical tastes than I had previously thought.

  • Beautiful Memories

    Many, Many Thanks

  • It's so soft you could put it on your toast without butter!

  • i always thought Brooke Benton sung this with Sarah, sounds very much like him.

  • If you listen to Brooke singing Rockin' Good Way with Dinah Washington (a great hit), you'll find he doesn't sound much like Billy at all. They're both baritones is all.

  • Memories of my early twenties are flooding back on listening to this. This is the creme de la creme of duets.

What a joy and a privilege you have given me by sharing this exquisite post.

    Thank you so much.

  • @Corrie121 Same as I. My late wife and I, use to dance to this 1962, when we got married. Brings back lots of memories. She passed away Jan 29th 2011.

  • @tripoveronce

So sorry to learn of your sad loss. The memories will be something to treasure.

my wife were married in 1962 too - October 11th.

    Regards,

    corrie121

  • @Corrie121 Thank-you so much, I really appreciate that. We married June 16th 1962.

  • Still makes me cry, even after all these years.

  • Seldom has such a beautiful song and performance become such a monster hit. It's amazing.

  • Only God give such voices.

  • Really doesn't get better does it?

    Sarah.....and Billy!! What a team!!!!

  • I was about 13 when I first heard this amazing number and got hooked. Now I have it in my favs...Perfection! Thank you SO much for posting it on YT!!!!

  • That's about when it was first released! I think I was 13, too! I have NEVER forgotten this song. More than 50 years and it is unforgettable. I remember every word from its realease in the '50s! What an impact!

  • A beautiful song with a poignant meaning for me at the moment.

Hearing Billy Eckstine sing also reminds me of my uncle who recently passed away, he used to sing in the same way.

Sweet memories all round, thank you.

  • Wonderful!, this performance really speaks to everyone privileged enough to hear it.

  • I grew up with this and there are no singers around now who come anywhere near.

  • OMG So long ago....so missed.

  • I can't express the joy of listening to my two favorite singers of all time, singing together. Heavenly!

  • What a voice!, They were a talent.

  • Many thanks for this timeless classic. It's great to see so many appreciative comments about the song and the incredible artistry involved. Unfortunately, the 'Golden Era' has passed but thank god we still have this kind of evidence..... Superb!

  • All of these modern day male singers can only dream of having a voice like Billy!!!!

  • Just wonderful, sweet voices. Enchanting.

  • As a teenager, growing up in Scotland, I loved Billy Eckstine and Ms.Vaugan singing this.

    It's a classic!!

  • Great selection, well done, much thanks

  • society has changed so much in it's values! i long for a time like this, which unfortunately i missed! I would have fit right in!

  • nothing like this, anywhere!!

  • I believe that we're already in heaven when we listen to a song like this!!!!! Sarah is the best and Billy really incredible!!!!

  • If there is a heaven, the music is arranged and sung by Mr Eckstine and accompanied by Ms Vaughan. I discovered Mr Eckstine quite late...but I am glad I did. Why does anyone bother with the likes of Michael Booby when you can listen to the likes of this ?

  • Yes Tertonka nothing we hear today even comes close to this, no one can pick holes in this performance ,Micheal Buble would try ,and he would fail.

  • Here I am, back again; This video is just amazing.... BEAUTIFUL

  • The definitive and greatest version of this wonderful 50s song. These two superb artistes have never been excelled for this particular love song. Five Stars, plus 1.

  • As Billy Eckstein once said about Sarah Vaughn, "She came equipped!"

  • FANTASTIC.....Thanks for posting this wonderful video.....Two of the best singers ever and the song is superb

  • OMG he is sooo good. He is like an african american Frank Sinatura!! His daughter is my singing teacher!!

  • he is so underrated! frank helped him with his big break at the copa! one of the best voices of his time, just as sarah was in her own right!

  • An African American Frank Simatra? please Sinatra isnt in the same league as Mr B.

  • I came across my old 45 of this that I still have. It's in such crummy shape, over the years and bad phonograph playings. It was great to hear a decent copy of this one again. What a great duet they made.

  • What an amazing combination of vocal talent!

  • Nothing like this anymore beautiful

  • I love this song...........

  • Isn't memory a funny thing? This fabulous song reminds me of radio programme called 'two way family favourites - sunday lunch - I can almost smell the cabbage'!!

  • Nice wedding song after a break up.

  • Wait, huh? Wedding song after a break up? Please explain.

  • *smile* lol...I guess I see both sides of the coin. It seems the lyrics are speaking of "lovers" who are strangers "now", but thinking things can "change" ummmmm. They sound like the "miss" each other and are still in love. Reminicing of the things they did as friends and lovers and wishing it would come true again. I'd say "renew the vows"....romantic.

  • Glad I stumbled upon this "timeless" song. Two wonderfully talented artist both had their own careers. To hear them do a duet is just "loving". Nice wedding song for people.

  • oh my good god, i love this song.

  • shilohdream. They are both dead. Billy has been dead for years I don't remember when Vaughn died

  • Sarah Vaughan passed away in 1990 and Billy Eckstine followed her in 1993. I regret your flippant reply to shilohdream. I did not realize there were so few songs of Eckstine and indeed Sarah's as well available on this site...and I have so many to share. That means I have work to do. I have more of their great duets, and their solo work. What legacies they left behind!

  • Didn't Billy do a solo recording of "Passing Strangers," as well? I do remember Benny Hill's Eckstine impression on one of his 1973 specials, where his "rendition" of "Passing Strangers" was well nigh unrecognizable I just found out what it was he was performing, which led me to here.

  • He may have, as I cannot say for certain, but it wasn't released as a single.

  • I double-checked - the AllMusic site claimed this to be an Eckstine solo on one of his box-sets, but the review mentioned that there were five Eckstine/Vaughan duets in the set, "Passing Strangers" included.

  • Please tell me who sings the 50s number 'Tell Me Why' with backing group...Mike

  • Eddie Fisher

  • You may already have the answer to your query re. "Tell Me Why", but just in case, it was EDDie Fisher.

  • superb and so moving.

  • My father loved this song - whenever i hear it i think of him. He has been dead many years, but just listening to this nostalgic song makes me cry as i think of him and how much i loved him!!

The song is ended - but the melody lingers on (in the words of Nat King Cole)

  • SUBLIME

  • my parents love them both, they are forever classic.

  • Absolutely superb! a master class in real singing.

  • Are they still alive??? they made a great looking couple and both sung so beautifully!

  • Someone emailed me and said I made a flippant reply to you about Sara Vaughn and Billy Eckstine. I don't recall making any comment to you about them and if I did it wasn't meant to be flippant.

  • I am enjoying the wonderful sounds of Sarah Vaughn and Billie Eckstine. Although, these are songs of another generation, I am thankful that this generation can experience the great talents of the past. Thanks for posting.

  • This stands alone as a poem or a melody. Add Billy and Sarah and you have a popular ballad of purest quality.

  • What can you say about Mr B and Sarah Vaughan? It doesn't get any better than this. Thanks for sharing this wonderful music!

  • They went together like milk and honey, so doggone beautiful

  • This was the first record I ever bought for my wife. We've now been happily married for 45years in March 2008.

Billy Eckstine has been my idol singer and role model since I was a teenager - a little unusual when you consider that I'm a white, Welsh guy from a village which didn't see a black man until the late 1950s.

Great stuf from Billy and Sarah.

  • As a black american who loves Tom Jones I think thats cool. Peace!

  • Shw mae, Deea.

(That's 'How are you' in Welsh). Tom Jones is from Pontypridd in South WQales. I know it well. The most exciting thing about Pontypridd are the traffic lights. There ain't anything else. Now you know why Tom left for the USA.

Best of British luck to you and yours.

  • The phrasing, harmony and delicacy of this duet certainly makes it one of my all time favorites. I was fortunate to have known this as a kid. Lozzie51, you can find this on a double CD called " Billy Eckstine Everything I have is yours: The best of the MGM years". If you check Amazon for Billy Eckstine, it's the first listing. If you do not want to buy the entire CD you can buy just this song.

  • oh dear here i go upset again but love this song cheers

  • Pure gold!

  • my uncle is after a copy of this on cd can u get one on cd though if anyone knows please post a comment and let me now

  • Superb!

  • Can't think of anyone else who tried to sing this beautiful tune after Billy and Sarah did their magic with it!!

  • One of my Dads favourites, I luv it too.

  • this is the best song " ever " probably

  • this song is pure love thankyou

  • Many years ago I used to work on the old Queen Elizabeth. We were in NY on turnround every 5/6 days. MY first visit was always the Paramount Theatre on Broadway and Times Square. The Paramount always had two films ans A and a B, with a 30/45 min variety show betwen the films. For a dollar and forty cents, one could be transported to anywhere in your dreams. I was fortunate to see Sarah and Billy singing a duet 'Prisoner of Love'. I shall always remember the magic of the moment.

  • I too remember that, and the Capitol theatre as well. Great memories.

  • notice how the voices are up front, not like todays music where producers sometimes have to hide the vocalists shortcomings behind a cacophony of sound this isnt close to perfection it IS perfection!!

  • thanks a million

  • I'm not knocking todays singers, there are some fantastic singers, but if you are you are 16 and think Pete Docherty is the only thing thats ever sung a song... just pause and listen :)

  • Oh , how wonderful !

Two voices from heaven and a tune touched by the hand of God .. absolute bliss

  • Heaven indeed.

    What a beautiful song

  • likewise. thank you to keith barron. I have looked a long time for this record

  • My mother had this record on 45rpm when I was small and she played it countless times. It's amazing to hear it again after all these years. Thank you for posting this. :)

  • wonderful

  • I have some early records of these two, Billy's version of "I apologize" is something I wish someone would post online. great duo

  • I have no problems this end. Try again.

  • it has stopped playing

  • Its now on my favourites

  • like u said shela2...lovely video

  • Two of the best ever,in one of the best duets ever.We are indeed blessed to be able to hear this musical miracle.Thank you.

  • In my opinion the best duet every recorded. Just lovely.

  • Suberp it certainly is!
