i have never seen anyone in a u.k. court swear on a bible in any court ...do you have to swear on a bible in court in the u..s..a ,,,,when god or the bible is not in the ststes constitution ..ive seen it on t.v court drammas but not in reality
@reksub10 People in the UK had to put their left hand on the bible and raise their right hand and swear by almighty god that the evidence they will give will be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Now you can have an 'affirmation' because of the prevalence of other religious beliefs (or lack of them).

@reksub10 Ah...hang on...you have probably only been in Magistrates courts (no jury and not a real judge) they don't do it there as far as I know because it's not a real court. The people fighting you in Magistrates courts are corporations. Corporations can't swear an oath to anything. However if you took a man to Queen's Bench (a real court of record) where people give testimony, they are sworn in. Not sure if a bible is still used.

what law dictionary has the most authority ,,is it the latest edition of blacks ,ie, the 9th can that supercede 1-8 or are they all equal at all times?or does ofords law dtionary have any clout over blacks or are they equal ?cos the word person in the 9th edition has a different definition to whats in the 3rd edition....in scotland i have never sworn on any bible on a court of commerce or law,nor has god ever been mentioned in any oath of truth
@reksub10 No law dictionary has any "authority". They're textbooks. The only dictionary used by the Courts is the Oxford English Dictionary, which is used when the definition of a word is disputed.

@reksub10 Blacks is not used in Court, it may be used as a reference point for solicitors to build their case, but the Court will not refer to it. If a definition requires clarification, they will only ever use the Oxford English Dictionary (Standard English dictionary - not a law dictionary) or precedent (case law).

Black's may very well tell you that a person is a "corporation" or a "natural person" in a different volume, however when you get in a courtroom, the clerk will define a person as a "human being", because that's what OED says. Black's are no different to normal law textbooks, and have no weight in a courtroom.
