there is a technique to ripping cards, just the same as phone books. notice you can't see the cards while he is ripping them....i weigh 183 pounds and i can tear a phonebook...it's all about holding it so you tear one at a time, no one could rip them in half all at once.

No need to get a new deck each workout. You can attempt to quarter the deck on the next workout or use phone books.
Other means for building a rock solid grip are towel or thick rope training.
