Very impressive! I usually don't comment on Youtube videos, but wow... Best version of this song by a drummer not named Peart or Portnoy that I've ever seen.
Very Well Done!! - Rush has been, is, and always will be my number 1 favorite Rock Band in the world - and you did a great job "trying" to imitate - but there can BE ONLY ONE Neil Peart!!! I saw them like 10 times from 1976 to 1988 live they are still in my opinion the only LIVE rock band that sounds as good or better than their studio recordings....
Great job, Ray. There's a guy (channel) on YouTube called Astrotama..I don't think he ever leaves his basement - he's VERY solid too. It's extremely hard to cover Peart...
I'm not ashamed to admit that I teared up a bit at your brilliant recreation! My friend and I spent countless hours back in the 80s trying to figure out how the professor did those parts and finally decided that he was some sort of super
alien and gave up! You F**KING rock! By the way, thanks for proving that you're human with that slightly sloppy footwork around 5:20. Otherwise I would have had to label you as a super alien as well!
Damn!!! Ok, minus Neil himself, I would say your the best candidate to fill in for him whenever he's out of the office.....you totally rock and have my vote!!! Like you, this is one of my favorite Rush songs too!!! You couldn't have found a tougher track to play......alent!!!
My favorite part of this song is the quiet breakdown in the middle, and you nailed it! The alternating pattern between the ride and the hi-hat....Awesome job!
You're probably not going to read this but if you do, would you please do a break down of 7:15. That's the only big problem I have with the song and it would really help to have it broken down. Thank you very much. It sounds wonderful.
I have been playing peart for 3o years. you have got it down you have that song down! Mfer! hehe good job the best drummer i have seen do this song. its too bad i could'nt have recorded this for you .
Ever since i was a child i wished that i would wake up and have the god given talent to be able to play an instrument like the rock stars. You sir are one of the lucky ones.
@GAGE1959 It's not a god given talent. It's hours, and days, and years of practice and hard work. He didn't woke up one day being lucky, he woke up a thousand days with the determination of being a better drummer every day.
@GAGE1959 I have to agree with centurydrive & Roninchannel.
He's not lucky to have it, and you'll never get the skill over a night, it takes years to get really good and in fact you get better every day you practice. Been playing for 13 years myself and seen improvement the last year...
I remember playin that at gigs on a five piece... Those were some sweaty nights!... But yeah, without passing judgement on the true God of drums, that was pretty good ;-)
sounds great my friend....keepin' it alive still. You know the old musicians saying...."you don't stop playing because you got old...you get old when you stop playing" bravo!!
Just by ear, I learned most of the song on drums, and I thought I nailed it; but seeing YOU play, I now see I missed soooooo many small things...you did it perfectly...If ever Neil is taking a sick day, give em a call, you could totally substitute for him.
Great job. I am a percussion but i just dont have time anymore with work and all. bravo great job timing a bit off here and there. but like the guy is young i am 40 and i grew up on neil pert and i still dont think i get it right all of the time. its a draining piece. Great job.
how did you covered this song? i mean did you read books with the partiture or it was just listening, or dvd. I'm actually trying to cover Rush songs but there are parts were I don't know what the hell he's doing like when he does that awesome things with the ride bell.
Nice job. I learned parts of this song a ways back and remember how hard it was to play that quiet guitar solo beat. Really messed with my mind. But you got it!
I learned this song when I was 16, I have to say, that Neil's current drum configuration (which you kinda have) makes some of the fills in this song almost impossible to nail fluidly, so kudos there. Some of the issues you're having with the hi hat pattern could be do to the fact that Neil used the tips of his sticks and the top of the hit hat, while you're hitting the rims with your shaft. (pun away). I was wondering why you let your index finger dangle and don't use it for finger control?
Bravo! Not quite Neil Pert but ohh so close...I have never heard someone even attempt that one! I'm not a drummer but it seems way more difficult than YYZ. Thanks for sharing that.
Absolutely awesome Ray! For those of us who've struggled with this song on drums for years, this is a huge help. I think some may get confused watching the fast-moving sticks on the hi-hat and think the timing is off instead of listening first. It was nearly perfect as far as I can tell. The only offense as far as I can tell is that you made it look a bit too easy. I believe Neil P. would be proud.
good cover man one of the hardest if not the hardest song to play on drums just one issue try your own style like try going away from rush covers for a while man maybe just sum simple classic rock wouldnt hurt not trying to be a dick of course
Dude, you are Great :) Neil would be proud man:). Phenomenal unique drummer u are :). During the jungle part 6:24, next time, try adding the 4 time hats. it will add something more than the great rhythm. Cheer's dude und Bravo again ;)
I can see where @TRayner is coming from. It's noticeable on the first section on the song from 2:20. I think it's just really easy to get carried away and as a result it can sound slightly ahead of itself. Nothing wrong with your performance itself, it just comes with the territory of playing an insane track like this and syncing it with the original recording. You wouldn't know if your drums were soloed. Even Rush themselves had to record this in three sections.
Do you think that you could give a tutorial for the part of the song that starts at 6:23? Thats the one part in the song that im having trouble with keeping as close to the original as possible and you nailed it! if you cud help me in anyway it would be greatly appreciated! thanks!
id just like to say great cover.i can get right up to 6:43 then i just loose it. that little jazzy part always messes me up. the fills right at 7 are great! awesome job man!
id just like to say great cover.i can get right up to 6:43 then i just loose it. that little jazzy part always messes me up. the fills right at 7 are great! awesome job man!
Really fricken awesome job! I'm learning this song in my band right now and this video is my main influence on me learning the song. I say you absolutely nailed it. ive got some drum vids on my channel if u wanna check em out. Thanks for posting!
That was great. With all due respect, however, your rhythm was a little of with the hi hat and ride, but to play this song perfectly is something only Neil Peart can do. BRAVO!
To be specific, it was in most of the hi hat, ride, and sometimes china progressions. In its entirety, however, I thought it was a fantastic performance...
I would say he's probably talking about the hi-hat lifts and "signature" Neil diddles on the ride. He plays more on top (rather than the edge) of the hi-hat at the beginning and in the quieter parts for a crisper sound. The ride diddles are just a tiny bit too loose and the accents are slightly different.
I imagine that much of the negatives are caused by the ambient miking rather than your playing. You are great!
@rays2112 I think he was referring to the part before the "monster beat" section of the song. Don't worry, you're not off. but there is a slight lag in the video, maybe that's what threw TRayner off. Shit though, I'm still working out the 16th with the hi-hat stalls at the beginning, and you mastered that whole song. It must've taken you a long time to do that. Good stuff!
@rays2112 I think they meant throughout the whole song. It may have just been the syncing of the music to the video. And your track isn't mastered the same as the original, so any little difference will stand out. Great job!
Ray ive heard alot of drummers but nobody nailed it like you ..... so being a drummer from new orleans tell me did you ever try the paiste signature power ride or the powerslave ride ... what are your thoughts??? i think most drummers would like to hear from you...... thanks .......
The part at 6:23 actually has a hihat pattern in it too, it just kind of hard to hear. I just thought you should know, I can't even come close to playing this song all the way through
I find this kind of drummin' is far more impressive than let's say Simon Phillips' gigs... Though extremely difficult too, it's far less inventive. Therefor, much credit to Rays and even more to Neil Peart for inventing it !
BRAVO!!

Great job!

@rays2112
I think he is talking at 3:00 and at 3:31 the hi hat cymbal is a little off rhythm.

The part at 6:23 actually has a hihat pattern in it too, it just kind of hard to hear. I just thought you should know, I can't even come close to playing this song all the way through

nice work. Impressive
I also play signatures and love them, although I did have a 18"fast crash crack on me, still, love their fast response

I find this kind of drummin' is far more impressive than let's say Simon Phillips' gigs... Though extremely difficult too, it's far less inventive. Therefor, much credit to Rays and even more to Neil Peart for inventing it !
