I also remember the movie "Tammy" I was young when the movie came out. I don't know if Tammy was the name of the movie or just the song in the movie. I remember the song as very beautiful. Sam Cooke was very unique. I loved his singing very much.
@johnnyrockintalkin - great comment. Love everything by Sam Cooke but didn't know he'd covered this. Like you I always loved the Debbie Reynolds original but Sam's done great with it too!
i always loved this by debbie reynolds, but this is a truly awesome version...............very touching, sensitive interpretation....i never heard sam cooke sing like this..........bravo.... off the charts
Sam was one of a kind, originally a gospel singer, his voice control was phenomenal, a real inspiration. I didn't know he did this, thanks for posting.
Cooke died at the age of thirty-three on December 11, 1964, at the Hacienda Motel at 9137 South Figueroa Street in Los Angeles, California. Bertha Franklin, manager of the motel, told police that she shot and killed Cooke in self-defense because he had threatened her.
It's a real scandal how he died...unfortunate for someone soooo incredibly talented. In case you don't know, there is more to the story of why he was at the hotel. Read it if you're interested. I'm a big fan of Sam Cooke. His voice was so easily incredible. He didn't overpower everything - you don't hear voices like his nowadays.
My name IS Tammy and I only remembered when the movies came out with Debbie Reynolds singing it, What a shock to see and hear this version I can't thank you enough for posting. My sister and I would sing this in bed when we were little! Thanks a million. No one can touch his voice in my opinion Tammy
I was a teenager back in Guyana (Jim Jones 1978 ?) now I'm married with 6 kids & Sam Cooke was then, and still is, a singer of the greatest warmth, soul & beauty; there's simply no one else like him. I get a special kind of nostalgia listening to him. That voice - priceless
Without question one of the finest vocalists of my lifetime (I'm 59). Most likely that's Sam playing guitar on this. People that knew him said he was at his best just sitting with his guitar and singing a song. I had this on a cassette tape from Europe but lost it. Thanks so much for posting it. Calling this decent is like saying the Empire State Building is a little tall. It's manificent. If anyone thinks they could deliver this song better please step forward; I'd love to hear it.
To say this is a decent version of the song is a huge understatement. This version is both touching and incredible. Only Sam could re-make it like this. To me, without a doubt he is the very best male vocalist ever. No one could deliver a song like Sam. The PBS documentary on Monday, 1/11/2010 was excellent. It gave an in-depth look into the man and his approach to music. Sam was one of those rare musical gifts to the world.
I never knew he did this. I love it very much. He puts his own special and superior touch on whatever he sings. I so wish we had Sam Cooke all these decades to bring us happiness.
most of my childhood this was the version I knew .Forgot how good it sounds .thanks for the posts, Compliments on a very fine collection of Sam's music.
I Love all of Sam's songs! what a voice! GOD Bless you Sam Rest In Peace <3
