Circa 1946 to 2006 I had experience with several types of Lister diesel engines. From memory the "screw in thing" is a CRCV, Compression Ratio Changeover Valve, on later Lister diesels it was operated by a simple lever. Also in the video an excess fuel device and a decompression "lever" were shown. These were all built in aids to starting the Lister engine shown.
I did deliver lectures on Aids to Starting Diesel Engines, manufactured and improvised, plenty of scope there!!.
very clean engine, and as you started it you appear to have your thumb and fingers on opposite sides of the crank handle, if so then it's a good way to break your thumb if it kicks back.
I have been told there is no good reason to switch to "low" compression unless the engine is to be placed under a heavy load. Otherwise, always leave the knob in "high".
Nice Lister CS, These are my faveorete Diesel stationary engines. I have a Lister D and a Lister A Junior. Is that an old water heating boiler for the water tank.
Yes it is. For starting screw it in, for more compression. Some people tell the CS is a shortening of Cold Start. It is a nice thing you can start a diesel engine without heating etc in the 1930's.

very nice engine. what is that box it is belted to? is it a gear reduction?
cubcadetpuller 2 years ago
Yes, it's a gearbox. The trolley can ride in 2 gears forward en 1 gear backwards. It is moving at max at 1 km an hour or less.

thats a smart idea
