Oh God, Rob Sheffield... Why did you make me like this!? hahaha :) This song is ridiculous, but I kinda dig it :) "Talking to Girls About Duran Duran" has brought me to like some of the most off the wall stuff and it's great :)
the only reason i know this song ever existed was coz im reading the book "Talking to girls about durran Durran" Its a great book so far. But i could have lived my entire pop music loving life without ever hearing this song!!!
In all these years I have never seen that video. Somehow I imagined Kate... wearing more. Oh well, in Soviet Russia famous old band have hit call watneys party seven...
@CartoonsAndGameShows Stuck in mine over 20 years. I couldn't remember much about the song except for the beat of the chorus, the "No chance", and the "Hard hard" at the end. I finally had to go on Wikipedia, look up every one hit wonder of the 80's, and play the ones I didn't remember until I found this. It's bad enough when a song runs incessantly in your head. It's worse when you can only remember a couple lines.
Florentean Gardens, 7 Seas, the Pladium, the Palace, Power Tools, Club X, Marylin's Backstreet, Grand Central Station,....etc.... anywhere they played dance music in the 80's i was there. KROQ and the music has sucked ass since 1990.
I'm all over the eighties, I still don't know what to think about this/them. They scared me a little then, and now, but not sure why. Hmmmm. Anyway, thanks for reminding me of this... ...classic?
@MrCocho69 Yeah the 90s mostly leave me cold too and so do the so-called 90s fashions. But as sad as I am to say it it's all coming right back even now.... *sigh* God I hated the 90s!
OMG I forgot how damn sexy that girl was. I was so in love with this video. What did you expect I was 16. The 80s in L.A. listening to, what was back than, the great KROQ kicked ass. Richard Blade, Poor Man, and Rodney on The ROQ were the shit!!!
@czarman01 I only saw this video once back in the early 1980s, and after that I used to keep MTV on all day and night hoping to see it again so I could record it on VHS. I promise you, I NEVER forgot how sexy Kate Garner was. I envy you growing up in LA, man (I lived there for years after I grew up). I was 20 hen this song came up and land-locked in the midwest.
@Foeley I don't know about stronger but there were definitely more and they cost a hell of a lot less. It was the 80 brother a decade of decadence. Everyone was getting on something or another. I truly thank God that I'm alive today because back then there were times when I didn't think I would make it. I swear it's only by the Grace of God that I'm alive today.
Ahhh what fun days to listen to music..Altered Images, Adam Ant, B-52's, Bow Wow Wow, Cure, Dead or Alive, Duran Duran, The Fixx,, Flock Of Seagulls, Billy Idol, INXS, Talk Talk
Mabye it was the drugs, but I remember being laid up on my back and being fed painkillers because I'd broken my clavicle and watching this video. I swear when she sings 'Shiny, shiny, bad times behind me." I thought she was singing "shiny, shiny right down behind me."
For the life of me, I couldn't remember the name of the video show I used to watch in the afternoon. I knew if I pulled up Hazy Fantayzee someone would know. Every day I would wait for this song...and Kate. She looks like a Patrick Nagel painting.
Totally awesome and I remember this as if it was only yesterday and dancing to this out in one of the clubs in Perth West Aust...those were the days....thanks for posting this been looking for it for ages..now need to find it to put on my ipod ... :)
lol, this is an irresistable song and she is so sexy. Great memories of the early to mid 80s. Who would believe that the song is actually about nuclear war?!
Asked to spin a friends surprise 40th B-day with the theme being the 80's (our teen years). Haven't spun in probably 5 years but I won't part with my gear (can't let go of my youth or my 1200's). Went to the storage for all my New Wave vinyl and low and behold...Haysi Fantayzee!!!
Brought the house down with this track.
Always loved Kate's voice on the first line before the backing vocals.
Gotta love MV3 Richard Blade, i love socal and all the imports that came here first thru KROQ and Rodney on the Rock, everyone else in the US had to get it way later.
i remeber going dancing @ Madame Wongs West, and the 321 Club in Santa Monica, when they would play this song everyone would dance like they do in the video. HAHAHA loved growing up in the 80's.
@dakinebud187 Hah MV3! I both hated & liked this show. I hated the fact that they cut away from the videos to showcase that kids dancing. Good memories though.
@gahloot I did dance at Seven Seas and the Palace, the Pladium, Madame Wongs West, Power Tools, and Flortine Gardens...I was THE Mr. 80's new wave dancer back then, what a great time it was. Still listen to the music, just dont dance anymore.
@dakinebud187 ...same up north, at the Palladium, the had "Rock of the 80s" night on KQAK, "The Quake". They played this quite a bit, along with other dance tracks from Funboy 3, the Cure, Husker Du, Simple Minds...it was great...Ultravox....the extended mixes were made to continue the song longer....
@dakinebud187 MV3 was awesome...I wall always remember seeing Berlin perform Sex on the show. It kind of warped my fragile little mind back then. And wasn't Pee Wee's (EG Daly) girlfriend also a host of MV3...and maybe even Mark Goodman? I remember a guy with the white man fro.
@amsyco it was richard blade, dave maples and some chick, it wasnt EG Daily I am 100 % positive about that. i was on the show 5 times. thanks for the post.
@beepollen1 As far as I know from the first time I heard it ...It's about the Apocolypse. I used to try and tape it whenever it was on KROQ in California and the same goe for the show in Cali called MV3 (with Richard Blade, Karen & also David Maples) I still own one of the few U.S. releases (on Vinyl) with the lyrics sheet. I've played it numerous times and...even the happy sounding melody belies a dark tone to this day. I can't help but dance everytime I hear it.
Kate----Those Eyes! ...and yes the body. I danced many a time to scratchy vinyl at clubs in L.A. when this was new. (...and in my Apt. when it came on MTV or MV3.) try and find music this good on MTV (or any MUSIC period) visually anymore
Today, in 2010 - due to Orwellian/Draconian law enforcement and politics - we could never produce a HAPPY-GO-LUCKY band that's this creative ... This is GENIUS and UBER-KOOL ...and obviously a bit Rasta - which the darn Nancy Reaganites have fed everyone up with here Nerd-Patrol Ways ... that needs to end -- the kool, good-looking people need to TAKE BACK AUTHORITY from all the nerds, freaks and pencil-necks running things now ... Anyone NORMAL here with me????
actually, thee is ONE semi easy to get CD that has this song on it. There was a whole series of CD compilations called "Living in Oblivion" they featured mostly the little known or 1-hit wonders of the 80s with lots of the British invasion stuff :D
loved it then and love it again now -and i dont know why but this song and "john wayne" often come to mind yet the last time i heard either was january1990.
-the show was a look back at the best and worst of the 80s
funny thing about this video...even though i only saw the video once, and the only thing i remembered was a girl wearing funky underwear and stripy tights walking and singing 'shiny shiny', this song has always been part of the soundtrack of my life.
the eighties were fun even if you were on the dole. Look at her... spent all her money on those underpants and shiny tights .. clearly didnt have enough money left for food but she didnt care she was having fun!!!! whoohoo !!!
Kate Gardner is going to bring this video back on the strength of her abs alone... not to mention the eyes. Than and the boy george/dexy's midnight runner's get-ups.. it almost works. If Jere healy had shortened his hair a bit it might have.. but you have to give it an "a" for originality.
Some one needs to be slapped.

I've recently become obsessed with this song. It never sounds the same way twice.
It's cheerful and foreboding at the same time.

funny thing about this video...even though i only saw the video once, and the only thing i remembered was a girl wearing funky underwear and stripy tights walking and singing 'shiny shiny', this song has always been part of the soundtrack of my life.

At the time I had no idea how ridiculous they were. Still, and don't tell anyone i said so, but I still like this one.

the eighties were fun even if you were on the dole. Look at her... spent all her money on those underpants and shiny tights .. clearly didnt have enough money left for food but she didnt care she was having fun!!!! whoohoo !!!

I think John Galliano should get credit for the look.

this must have been in the 80s when girls had waistlines rather than be "curvy" which is a word hijacked by the fat brigade.
MegaRapture 1 year ago
@MegaRapture What's a "fat brigade?"

Yeah, she has the abs of a ironwoman triathalete.
Kate Gardner is going to bring this video back on the strength of her abs alone... not to mention the eyes. Than and the boy george/dexy's midnight runner's get-ups.. it almost works. If Jere healy had shortened his hair a bit it might have.. but you have to give it an "a" for originality.

she has such pretty eyes..

this is why the 80s were so great. nothing near the character in music, videos, and fashion now...

@chubba25
Yes, when Boy George came along after this, we thought it was the he was trying to copy the girl from Haysi Fantaysee.
Its amazing that he gets all the credit for his look.
