Just because something has a softer type of soul vs funkier does not mean it is less(except for black folks). Flo is singing too loud in the background & I could not hardly hear Mary. Control and blend is important for any group and is part of being a good singer too and not how loud you are. Yes, Flo is a good singer as well.
I liked Diana on this. It showed her versatility. She had a certain soul that was very commercial, but it was a little more soulful here. I don’t know why everyone keeps comparing Flo and Diana.Diana was the lead singer and Berry was going for a certain sound for the Supremes and all of them had to fit into it to some degree. Flo had a certain funky soul that would not be very commercial for the group. Diana was more versatile.
Diana did very well on this song & soul is, indeed, Miss Ross' forte, as demonstrated on her version of the gospel classic "Ninety-Nine & A Half". However, many of the Motown producers would tone her down-for some reason-so, she'd always sound overly "clean", but, when they'd let her do her thing & cut loose, she's in a class all her own.:)
Nice version, Diana don't sound too bad and Mary and Flo sound great BUT, this is really not Diana's song. If she was to seriously sing this she should have SAAANG like she did on Let Me Go The Right Way. But, really and truly Flo was on the only supreme in that lineup that could really and SUPREMELY cover this song. Still a great post though

Jarrett8ty8,
your reply is an example why parents need to control the access of their childrens' internet use. Your obviously a child, and I don't play with children. so this is the extent of my response to you.
I love this version. The Supremes ROCK!!! But, imagine if you will.....Flo singing the lead!! (Remember her rendition of Ain't That Good News)....Wow!...Can I Get A Witness!!!!

Even as the diehard Diana Ross voice fan that I am, I have to admit her voice isn't the most appropriate for this song, even though she kicks ass on it. She won the choice for lead singere for most songs during the session recording because Berry needed her high soprano cutesy voice for broad appeal. After all, its not just entertainment, it's a business.
Flo did the same thing on the background of the original Marvin Gaye recording. She is the only one that you can hear very distinctly on Marvin's version.
I thought Martha and the Vandellas sang background on the early Marvin Gaye singles, not The Supremes? The Supremes did background on a few Mary Wells singles.
The Supremes sang backup on Marvin Gayes "You're A Wonderful One" also. They did the back up on (well Mary wilson did) on Smokey and the Miracles "Mickey's Monkey". Martha & The Vandellas did Stubborn Kindas Fellow, Pride & Joy and others....
Yeah, Martha and the Vandellas were not the 'exclusives' on Marvin's songs or anyone else's. They were early favorites, but I like the Supremes Better really. They sang on many other songs including Kim Weston. The Supremes may've showed up ANYwhere. But MANY people sang backup on each other's songs. The Originals, 4 tops, Tempts, etc. You're liable to be listening to them and not even notice on a Motown Song! EvenTony Orlando's "DAWN" is on Motown's background list.
diana way too weak on this lead vocal. this should have been flo ballard up front. she would have nailed it.

@BAREBACKER Have to agree that Flo was better on certain songs. She certainly sang with more soul than Ms Ross

Flo would have killed the lead of this. Soul is not La'Ross forte. But this is good for what it is.
