  • iphone for the win (:

  • Love the colour grading in this video. Subtle but effective.

  • @MichaelDMagee Thanks mate - although if you saw the RAW footage, your comments would be different =P I pushed the colours quite far to get it where I liked it...

  • @BenMcEwan What i mean by it is that the colours don't look over done. They still look natural albeit dark. Either way thumbs up :D

  • Finally a color graded video! Thank you, I was starting to think no one even knew about color grading. Quite a phenomenal video. How long did the whole process take?

  • @CS5TutorialsMaster

Thanks mate. I can't really give you a solid figure, but it was done in my spare time over the course of about 3 weeks.

  • Energise

  • probably the best effects video ive seen so far

  • awsome!!

  • iphone teleport... a very different aproach of using trapcode but I like it!

  • What about those pulse lasers? Those are annoying to get into that shape, I'll tell you that... -_-

  • @confidential007 Effect - beam. Easy!

  • @BenMcEwan It's the rounded edges that get me. I mean they are always too round and not diamond. Or maybe it's just blurring, I can't really tell...

  • I love how bad guys have worse aim than good guys! :D

    But impressive video! Nice work!

I'd like to know how you did the particles, mine are a bit weird.. The color on your are better also.

  • @confidential007 I know right?

Thanks :) Particles took me quite a while to get where they are with Trapcode Particular. To put it simply, I made a circular mask and copied the "mask shape" parameter (no keyframes, you highlight the word and copy it) to a spotlight. Then you can use the loopOut("continue") expression to endlessly loop it around in circles.

From there, you can use that light as a Motion Path in particular and they'll travel in a circle.

  • @BenMcEwan Wait how did you use the same method as I but a totally different result...?

I mean with yours, It circled the person but mine has to rise up and down. -_-

  • @confidential007 Then in Particular you can just mess with the emitter width/height until it looks nice/covers your actor. I had a few layers offset in time to make it appear as though all the particles were emitting from different spots, rather than the same point. Particular is a little bit limiting.

To get the particles behind the actor, I just used the vanish distance thingo. You can't get great results with that, but who want's to manually paint out particles frame-by-frame?

  • @BenMcEwan Ohhh, Okay...

And that's rather smart of an idea!! :D

    Vanishing points. Hmmm.

  • @confidential007 As for the colour, I precomposed my particle layers and lights, and put a black solid at the bottom of the stack in the pre-comp. Then I used adjustment layers set to the "add" blending mode with varying fast blurs to make it glow. Back in the main comp, set the precomp to "add" as well, and just add a colour balance for colour. I always check preserve luminosity - things look unrealistic when you don't.

Long 3 comments, I hope it's helped some how!

  • Not a Star Trek fan... but hey I loved this vid.

  • omg tut please

  • you are very good , it looks professional

  • lol

"Hey, I'm just gonna press this button" [click] "and in five seconds, whoever I throw it at will explode" [4 seconds later] "Wait, was I supposed to throw it?" [boom]

  • That is really cool!

  • nice work mate

  • epic

  • this is friken osome

  • wonderful!

  • Nice work Ben. I posted a video response for the hell of it. Just to let you know that you got some admirers of your talent over here in Nigeria.

  • What kinda of camera did you use for this? It seems nicer than your everyday MiniDV.

  • Canon HV20 - very cheap HDV solution. For what it is, it's a great little camera!

  • Indeed, now we "civilians" can film very good quality home movies !! , it is the era of the open movies !!

  • I love this. That was one of my favorite scenes in the movie. The sound work, the visuals.. rar. So good.

If I had an excuse to do a clip like this in a movie, I so would.

  • Impressive, dynamic video! Some questions if you don't mind, phaser - you wrote it is a beam, with fractal noise and some glow? And impulse shots-is it built-in particles with effect(for example, default spheres in TP with motion blur) or instance objects, which you made in another layer(and emitter generates this layer many times)? I'm not asking you to make a tutorial - as you can see from my videos, I managed to do the phaser and impulse weapon effect also with tp, but you did it much better.

  • Thanks. The only thing I used Particular for was the very first shot, and the little sparks flying off the tree when it gets hit by a bullet (you can barely see it though).

Effect > Generate > Beam. It's the base for the bullets and the laser beam (don't know the technical terms, sorry). Then I've just used glows and fractal noise to amplify them. Very, very simple stuff...

Be sure to check the motion blur switches too.

  • Ooh, thank you for the answer, it is very helpful!

  • Hello, I watched again your video(actually, I watched it 10 or more times:) and want to ask about transporter effect - how did you make this "3d mask", when the boy is starting to appear, the particles are not visible behind him. Is it 3d solid layer with mask or something else?

  • It's a pretty cheap trick, and very rough at that! You can make a 3D Solid, and then tell Trapcode Particular to not display any particles past that point. I think it's call an obscuration layer (probably in the visibility tab).

Why I say it's cheap is that the particles still get "obscured" even when the actor isn't there - and the obscuring isn't very accurate at all!

As far as I'm concerned, this is the best result you are able to get in After Effects...

  • Thank you very much!

  • that was aweome!!

  • wooooooww, i'm stunned

amazing color correction, awesome effects, kick ass focus poins, shaky but still smooth camera

    just incredible! :)

  • lol, whoeer was firing those energy weapons must have really crappy aim.

    HE WAS RUNNING STRAIGHT

    lol

  • NICE FUCKING CAMERA

  • hey can you tell me how you made the lasers in after effects?

  • Check out the beam effect!

  • umm what beam effect? there is no beam effect on your channel and i was asking how you did it :)

  • Yeah there is. Effect > Generate > Beam... Should be there (in after effects) :D

  • oh sorry about that i thought you were talking about another video lol

  • wow love it~

  • can this be done wit afinal cut express 4? thank for the reply! great work wish i had your skils

  • Final cut is an editing package, not a visual effects one. That being said, I'm pretty sure you couldn't.

  • theres an app for that

  • ha ha ha lol

  • rofl. good call ;)

  • Mate the amount of people asking bout the beam effect must be annoying

  • Sorta.. I like helping people out where I can (I'll make a tutorial eventually, when I've got some time). The thing that annoys me is when people don't try for themselves.. There's not a tutorial for everything in life! I feel you really don't learn unless you do it for yourself. The other thing that really annoys me is being accused of copying Andrew Kramer when this stuff isn't even related a tiny bit! :P

  • yeah

yours is better though.. keep it up bro i like your stuff

  • good stuff! But make a full movie with story and actors!

  • Working on it. Kind of need money first ;)

  • man what kind of camera do you use?

  • Canon HV20

  • i liked the sounds so much and the camera resolution

  • AHHHH...did he get out? lol

    Thats awsome man.

  • Fucking outstanding work man!

  • do you record in 720p? and what did you use for output settings

  • 1080p, and I normally export a Quicktime with Sorenson 3 Codec.

  • fkkk yeahhh. aussie style ftw.. i subbed

  • shit yeah! ;)

  • xD I-PHONE FTW

  • nice vid i subbed

  • is that done in after effects?

or what else do you use?

  • 100% After Effects. The only time I use any other software (like Nuke) for visual effects is when doing hardcore compositing.

  • mate, this is really well done, you should look at doing a short film of some sort

  • LOL the aliens really have HORRIBLE AIM

  • That's looking great man! Don't know why I wasn't subscribed to you already ;). Camera work is great, and that's some awesome use of particular! Really inspiring, when I see this I want to go out and make a video myself ;). So, I'm subscribed now, looking forward to your videos!

  • Glad to be inspiring ;) Makes me want to make more stuff!

  • This is freakin' cool!

  • fantastic job!

  • oh btw...r u using any of andrew kramer's products to make this?

  • Nope. 100% original (except for the star trek idea)

  • hey man! that was great, i could probably do the effects myself, but what really impressed me was the camera work!!!!! any tips? im subscribing to u dude!

  • I've got plenty of tips, but we'd be here for months. Really, the most useful tip I have for you is get out there and make some stuff. Then put it online, look at it for errors, find out how to fix those errors, then go make something else. Repeat that process :P

  • Very impressive!

  • great quality here! :)

  • holy crap... That was INSANE!!!!

  • looks fantastic

  • Witch camera dit you use?

  • Canon HV20

  • good camera work, good effects, good acting, good sound effects.

    it's great! :P

  • Impressive. Is this your own take on Kirk's early days?

  • very cool. what camera do you use?

  • Canon HV20

  • Fantastic little cam. :)

  • Most definitely!

  • Canon HV20

  • Your color grading is fantastic. Looks absolutely splendid. As for effects, everything look fantastic as well. However, a couple of blasts making contact with something would have looked nice. On the whole, superb job on the entire thing.

  • Why thank you :D

Well we do have some bullets hitting stuff. The 3rd shot a bullet hits the rock, and the one with the pan as James is running past the tree, a bullet hits the tree :P

I really need to get good with some 3D stuff so I can make chunks fly off stuff lol.

  • wow that´s really cool

  • O.O omfg... YOU ARE A VIDEO GOD!!!!!!!!! lol seriously, dude. XD just the sounds is a bit... not good. lol sory, but yeah. =) you know, most film makers usually make their own sounds. =)

  • yeeeah... it was my first run at Star Trek sounds so I had to find some but most of the ones I found were no good so I had to create em. ;)

  • Looks perfessional

  • Very very good! This is the first effect like this I have seen on youtube... I would suggest adding a glow to your subject though during the materialization. Excellent!

  • The aim was to try to get it looking somewhat like the movie. I shot it about a week after seeing it then had to put it on hold for a while since school/work took over. So the only reference footage I had was barely a second from the trailer lol.

Note to self: go see Trek again because it was awesome :D

  • Wow! That's amazing it looks so good that it could be mistaken as an actual clip from the Star Trek movie! Very professional looking.

  • Why thankyou!

  • lol nice xD

  • bitchin

  • Ooohahaha, I'm drooling :D :D

    Awesome! Great job!

Although, I think the music was a bit low, don't you think? ;P

  • I'll pump it up to 1000dB next time :D

  • that kicked ass!

  • way cool man... i also like the colors (the "look" of the whole thing)

  • OMFG!!!!!! Ben, you're gettin better and better!!! I don't know where to begin with this one. The color correction is just amazing! Favorite 5*

  • :D Thanks

  • Yea, better than what I could do. I could do all that except the teleportation part. Color grade and music looked/sounded well.

  • Dude awesome job, that was awesome!

  • awesome?

    :P

  • pretty darn cool ben!

  • you're sooo damn cool...

  • mate that was outstanding

  • this has really fuckin epic written all over it!

  • Really great. I like the colour effects you used...

  • sickk
