yes that was a sad catch i recommend not holding its head like that unless its poisonous and you should support its body it is very uncomfortable for a snake to be suspended by its tail thats why it looked like it was striking it was trying to climb up when you catch a snake correctly by the time you let it go it should be tame and comfortable with siting in your hands .
