  • this video was retarted

  • Seriously...thank you for these vids

  • Hi Rob great to see your work again now I have a way to get on to you tube again (my pc died). My Guesses would be 1)bow drill 2)condom lense 3)hand drill 4)ice lense 5) cotton bud and ear wax (I think you've already done this one?) 6)water lense 7)Keychain survival kit? 8)plow and groove (hole to gather dust in?) 9)one handed fero rod fire 10)fire piston (I can't wait to see this one!) Thanks for all the work you put into these - I hope you enjoy making them as much as I enjoy watching them!

  • make more please

  • #10- u are trying to make spark with hot air pressure.

  • Fantastic videos, fun as well as informative. I am looking forward to your videos on making a fire with a condom (and water) as well as the bamboo fire saw. I am currently working on my own fire piston.

I would like to see a short series of "unwanted" fire. Maybe something like the unintentional mixing of household chemicals or possibly what happens when you accidentally drive a nail through a wall in to household wiring.

    Good Journey

    sunblade

  • I feel as though I check for the new videos too often. My life has been monopolized by the potent combination of entertainment and education tha ROB prvides. Please post soon; I need my fix.

  • Great!

  • The only one I'm not fairly certain about is the stick with the two holes on the ends. I tend to think fire saw.

  • Before I stumbled upon your vids, I had a hard time deciding whether to watch science and pyro videos or comedy. You have the perfect mix of each!

  • what is it with these wanna be crocadile dundees and there hats with feathers

  • cant wait to see more fire vids!!!!!

  • #1 fire with friction using bow and stick .

    #2unknown .

    #3unknown .

#3 making a lense out of ice

    #4 making a welding google

    #7unknown

8 making the bow for the friction fire

    10 fire piston

and then the pop sound when the piston comes out

  • haha at #6 you looked like that guy with the robotic eye on harry potter :D

  • haha, I can't wait.

  • 91 to go....piece of cake.

  • Here's my comment- RoB, you're one funny fella. I share your stuff with folks who don't even have YT accts. Love your stuff. You crack me up. My kids know who Rob with a B is (we even watched Quest for Fire before I introduced them to your 101 W2MF series) and have had them flattening aluminium foil in a pot top this summer.

Keep it up. You are educational and HILARIOUS!

  • Sounds good Rob can't wait to see what you got for us. Keep up the good work and keep down the bad!!!???

  • Comment?! But....but...but....I don't know what to say.

  • I think youre really funny..

    What is your profession?

    fire maker?

cause you seem to know a lot about everything.

  • the last thing was a fire piston, i has a nice one, works well with char cloth

  • Hey ROBwithaB, thought you might get a kick out of this: A hotel in Las Vegas (shaped like a giant parabolic mirror) is partially cooking it's guests on sunny days. Perhaps you could do a movie on how to create fire with a 40 story hotel and a sun-baking lawyer :-D

Details available at Engadget dot com. Search for "Vdara hotel 'death ray' claiming victims in the Las Vegas Strip"

Keep up the great work! :-)

  • @Gekk071

Yeah, this story showed up yesterday on yahoo news. And you're right, I got a great kick out of it. What kind of halfwit architect/engineer designs a parabolic sail comprising thousands of square metres and covers it with mirrored glass?

If the reports are true about hair singeing and plastic melting then I'm pretty sure it would get hot enough to char stuff, and probably get something smouldering.

Don't drink your wine out of bowl-shaped glasses at THIS hotel...

  • Most people ignore lens fires, when they're basically the lowest energy sustainable fires to make

  • @beakfast

And easy, too, especially if the lens is spherical.

I'm convinced that the whole mysticism surrounding crystal balls has to do with their original purpose, which was to make fire.

Very reliable, very durable and basically idiot-proof.

Will be making a video on the Viking burning-stone. They used quartz crystals, polished into bals. Doesn't have to be very big at all.

  • your videos are cool

  • oonga boonga. your videos are great. anticipating more ways to make fire. peace and love from east Texas

  • Hey!!!

We are a club about all types of survival and watch your 101 ways to make fire videos at our meetings. We enjoy your videos and hope to see more!

  • nice spinning firestick technique fella - I 'm inspired to give it a try.

Saves energy for drinking as well.

  • did u know ur vids are so intresting

  • hey there rob,

my son - roland - joined the australian cadets, and had to buy flint and waterproof matches for 25 dollars. should i have referred him to your videos instead? not that 25 bucks buy any decent pair of shoes... what about the expensive compass? where does the moss point to in the southern hemishphere? ...

  • hey there rob,

  • Loved the McCalisters, LOL. Was the best part. Okay okay i have made apost and now PLEASE don't block me.......... Happy 1500+. I guess if I wan't a slouch I would make wonderful videos like you, Okay so much for my kiss.....

    cheers

  • I love your jokes :D

  • I like your jokes :D

  • Yeah I'm alive. My camera is just being finicky and I need a new one. Love the new video from you!

  • At last! some more FIRE incoming!! *Keep the fiyah burning and burning and burning!!!!!* :D

  • lol, doesn't mean I haven't been making fires....

  • good video

  • dude you are EPIC.

  • Heeem, trying to guess... 1)fire with pieces of wood ? 2)without a doubt, a fire-fart 3)Sangoku's way, lauching a fireball with your hands 4) ???ice, to make blue fire ? 5)Earwax may burn easily ? 6)Superman's laser vision 7)Your car burns well too 8)a Jedi's lightsaber will set anything into fire 9)making fire with one hand ? 10)didn't understand anything, the "boup" comes from a grenade laucher ? just joking, i'll be happy to see these videos
  • ROBwithaB ROBwithaB ROBwithaB ROBwithaB ROBwithaB ROBwithaB !!!

    I've missed you :(

  • #1 = flywheel hand drill #2 = water condom magnifier #3 = hand drill #4 = ice magnifier (double boil some filtered water to make clear ice) #5 = ear wax as spark receiver #6 = double magnifier fire #7 = battery and steel wool #8 = one handed firesteel fire #9 = bamboo friction fire #10 = fire piston that's my guess anyway. You were the first person I came across to explain the chemical process of organic material burning, great info and it made me search for even more details. thanks.
  • @deanznz

One doesnt actually need distilled or even boiled water, believe it or not. The trick to making clear ice is knowing when to stop. Most crystals (including water) are very determined to be pure. If you think about it, clear ice often forms on lakes and streams, which are heavily "contaminated" with such inconvenient matter as oxygen, silt, fishspawn, suba-divers etc. The secret lies in the anomalous expansion of water, in that the solid is less dense than the liquid.

    Stay tuned.......

  • im a real subscriber :(

  • @ProjectMATHEW

    Good to know. Thanks.

  • who is author sounds like a pussy name ,but did you light your ass on fire ? only when its raining

  • @DanOlooney

Hey Crazy Dan - play nice with the other children.

  • @ROBwithaB lol

  • YAY!! rob is back!!! missed your videos. glad to see your ok...sorry to hear about the "calisters". just goes to show what you're willing to do to show us how its done. thanks for the hard work and dedication.

  • @elbauzan

Cheers. As much as I might like to perpetuate the idea that I'm doing this for you guys, mostly it's for me. If video cameras and the internet didn't exist, I'd probably still be doing this in my spare time.

Unfortunately the "spare" part can be a bit of a problem.

  • awesome! i cant wait to see the vids you create! :D

  • @Kateydid18

Nice to see the girls being interested in fire too.

  • Pretty sure I can work out most of the fire lighting techniques except the bareback condoms. That one has me intrigued. Funny video as usual Rob.

  • @seanmulhall fill the bareback condoms with water maybe, use as a magnifying lens to start the fire??

  • @elbauzan Maybe, not sure you'd be able to get a focused enough point to cause ignition. I may be wrong lets see. Im looking forward to this video.

  • @seanmulhall

Like most of these, there's a bit of a trick to it.

    Three variables in solar concentration:

    1. Cross-sectional surface area of the device

    2. Factor of concentration (size and clarity of focal "point")

    3. Angle o incidence to incomeing light

For a spherical lens, the last one isn't relevant.

There can be a bit of a trade-off between the first two. If the capture area is big enough, you can get by with a less efficient lens.

  • The BEST fire making vid i may have ever seen Rob!

  • @Evangeline30575

    Thanks.

(uhmmm.... How many have you watched?)

  • @Evangeline30575 Like Seven!

  • it's so entertzining to watch your vids, so funny

  • @Galicum

    Thanks for letting me know.

  • Great work Rob!

  • HEY ALL HATERS!!!! first survival Technics - second no kid would have the patience to do that - third all the bush fires are from retards throwing in sht like gasoline and lighter fluid or leaving a fire untended so fuck off!

  • these look intriguing, and funny as usual. hope to see another video again soon, Rob.

  • @eerbrev

There's a few on the way.

(One of which involved over SIX HOURS of filming. That one might take a while to edit.)

  • wonderful,...am looking forward to your new vids.

    , I likes em muchly

  • @VonLeachim

    Thanks for commenting.

  • @ROBwithaB thanks for sharing them

  • I can't hardly wait the next one :)

  • great video. Looking forward to more fire starting vids. They're both useful, and edjucational...hehe.

  • Dammit Rob I wanna come live with you heh

  • @TastingAshes

I appreciate the sentiment, but I must warn you, it's already quite crowded here, just with all the people in my head.

  • YAY MORE FIRES :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • you back!!! YIPPY!!!

  • @butterflyjez

Speaking of making videos, don't you think it's about time that YOU posted one?

  • glad to see a new video! Rob

  • @WebDragonAZ

Thanks for the comment. Good to see so many.

  • with your talents you would have been really really rich in caveman days

  • @nintendolunchbox

Or in the early days of gonzo porn....

  • So glad to see a new video!!! I thought you forgot about us and our need to learn new ways to start fire!!!! I can't wait to see what you got coming up!!

  • Can't wait for the new vids I'm a bit of a pyromaniac myself

  • @assassinjay1229

Yeah, I kind of worked that out already.

But you know, in these politically-correct times, "pyromaniac" is deemed to be offensive. Nowadays, we prefer to be called .... ummm...... actually pyromaniac is probably pretty accurate. I'll go with that.

  • Okay, here goes:

#1-Friction fire with hand drill, #2-Solar fire with condom lens, #3- No clue, #4-Solar fire with molded ice lens, #5-No clue, #6-Solar fire with lens #7-8-9-No Clue, #10-Fire piston

  • @KBLinABQ

I think we'll give you 3.5 points out of ten.

There's something quite specific (and cool) about the first one, which I deliberately cropped out of the frame.

  • Cant wait Rob

  • Rob i would enjoy sitting around with you and a pint and come up with some more ways to make fire with just household items that people have in there homes / have a contest with vids just to see other ways people can (in an odd way) can make fire

  • @ernest302

    What can I win?

  • ROB ROB ROBFDFGBWEDKGJBWEDIB!! up lode them or ill call u BOB!!!

  • @Armstrong202

    NOOOOOOOO !!!!!

    *repeatedly jabs "Upload" button*

  • ps: I don't think you should skip all the talking. i LOVE the talking. :(

  • @jenzatron

    Hello gorgeous.

Here I am spending all this energy trying to be a Man of Action, and it turns out there are still girls who like a Man of Words???

  • Hurry! My pyromaniacal ways have been going insane while waiting for new videos!

  • finaly I get to see some fire making videos about time to i throught you had given up on it o'well good to see to back Rob.

  • So where's the flame

  • @wtr7

If it didn't have a number, it doesn't need a flame.

I was tempted to burn something though, just for the hang of it, but I thought that might confuse people.

#11 (with obligatory flame) coming soon....

  • Can't wait for the new videos... That is all. I will go now.

  • hey rob your pretty good at this hha now i know how to make fire from alot of stuff D:

  • dude where you been?

  • Can't wait to see what's in store. Ooga booga!

  • Hi Rob, long time no see. I missed a couple but here's a few I think I've got, 1 is a fire drill (pump drill), 2 Water filled condom-solar magnifier, 3 Hand drill, 4 Ice sphere-solar magnifier, 6 Two plain convex lenses back to back to make a biconvex lense, 8 Bamboo saw, 9 Single handed ferro rod trick, 10 Fire piston. I'll be interested to see what you do with the ear wax, and I'm not sure what your showing us on the keys, maybe some sort of electrical ignition method.

  • @cujomojo2007

Many people (in South Africa at least) will have some sort of remote control for a security system or automated gate on their keyring. I figure that in a survival situation, one of the things that you have with you is your keys, because very few people were actually PLANNING to land up the creek without a paddle. You get there because your plans went awry. And your original plans probably included getting back to your car or your house. Which means you have the keys....

  • Awesome! I'm looking forward to seeing them.

  • @BKenshin

    Cool.

Thanks for commenting. (I figure if I'm going to instruct people to comment I probably owe them the courtesy of a reply.)

  • OMG! I havn't seen you in forever. I almost forgot about you.

  • @SugarFreeTargets

(Politically-incoorect Alzheimers Disease joke removed here.)

    You had me at "almost".

  • @ROBwithaB Oh, I'm sorry. Haha!

  • Fire!!!

  • @SunkenLane

    You're alive.

Why did you stop making videos?

  • Good to see you again, my friend! I'm looking forward to the #1 video on this list (it is one of my favorite ways). Cheers, mate, keep well!

  • @otakop67

I like to think that my solution to the balancing of the flywhell was very elegant.

I've tried a few things, but this one was right under my nose ever since I made up the piston....

  • Hand drill blisters! Are you going to make air pressure fire too?

  • @michalhantl

    War wounds. I've earned them.

And yes to the second. In more ways than one.

  • Can't wait to see the rest of the fires.

  • @TEKsterful

    Coming soon.

Including a bonus video I didn't show here, with spontaneous combustion.

  • Arsonist!

  • @mobilefreek

    Arsonists use matches.

(And yes, that is a bit of an insult in certain circles.)

  • just think its irresponsible to encourage fire lighting techniques in a country that suffers large bush fires especially in areas of economic growth. it puts lives at stake. kids might think that is fun until the untold damage is done. i am an out doorsy person aswell and as the saying goes Water and Fire make good servants and bad masters.

  • @mobilefreek

It's a saying worth repeating. This whole 101 project started out after I watched footage of the Australian bushfires. We had also had very bad fires here in South Africa the previous year. I was applying my mind to ways that lives might be saved. (in fact there is a whole series of videos I'm planning to make called "Lessons from the Victorian Bushfires".) In order to speak with authority, I needed to get a very thorough understanding of the science and behavior of fire.

  • @mobilefreek

(cont) Even though I have a lot of experience fighting veld fires, I have managed to learn an enormous amount about fire as a result of the 101 Fires project. I now understand why the sky was on fire in Kinglake, and how that led to people dying in their homes. I have devised a way to ember-proof a house whilst venting out flammable (and poisonous) gases. I've realised that you should probably open all the curtains in your house before leaving.

    And so on.

    It's about understanding.

  • @mobilefreek

At the time of the bushfires in Oz, I made a video about underground bunkers. (I'm still convinced that bunkers need to be an integral part of the strategy if people choose to live in high-risk areas.)

If we are to make a servant of fire, we need to understand it and know what "motivates" it. So the irony of my ostensibly arsonist tendencies is that the entire raison behind it was actually to do with PREVENTING loss or damage through fire.

    (cont)

  • @mobilefreek

There are MUCH easier ways to start a fire than with a hand drill. I think a kid is rather going to spend 5 minutes finding a match or lighter in the kitchen drawer than spending weeks (or months) practising his hand drill technique.

One of the things I am trying to show with this series is just how easily fires can start accidentally. There is a video in the pipeline involving simple linseed oil, that is truly scary.

"Knowledge is power". That's another saying I enjoy.

  • @mobilefreek

It's quite a bit of a reach to accuse RobWAB of irresponsibly encouraging children in fire starting, if you've paid the least bit of attention, it's clear his videos are intended for a mature audience.

If an unsupervised child wants to start a fire, it's unreasonable to think he's going to do it with a condom filled with water or a lens carved from ice. No, a butane lighter or a pack of matches is going to be his go to source of ignition, both easily acquired by a budding pyro.

  • @1q2w3e1z2x3c inresponse all i can say is that children look up up to thier elders, if we can entrust them to do the right thing with such knowledge then fine. But with global warming creating conditions for wild fires then thats another matter.

  • I only got the first two...

  • @Aetos325

Considering that 99% of people stop at "matches" and "lighter", two is pretty good.

  • I reckon you're going to make a lens with the big block of ice. Short circuit the battery from the car key thing and the last one, well that's easy. Forcing a plunger down an air-tight tube compresses the air inside forcing it to heat up, put a bit of charcloth in the bottom when you do it and bingo! All the things needed for a romantic candle-lit dinner with Roberta.

  • @TheAngryBum

    Hence the condoms....

  • yea make another video so kids can find another way to burn there houses down lol

  • @kirklanddavis

AS a kid I was always told "Don't play with matches".

And being an obedient kid, I did not.

Of course, they never said anything about ice cubes and wood.....

  • the first one is a friction fire ? i also saw something that looked like a firesaw, maybe you could shape the ice in a form that gives you a good focal point, but it would melt in the heat of the african sun ? ... meeh.. uuh also i saw a firesteel, idk what barebacks are so oyu got me stumped there ... . 6 is a parabolical (i think, i'm bad at maths ... it could also be hyperbolic, but yeah ... SOMETHING with bolic in it ;p ) idk what the rest could be, but i'm waiting to learn =D

  • (ran out of chars)

maybe i got an idea for oyu as good tinder/to make fire, (even though i'm a very poor pyromaniac so idk anything big about them ... well Fires...)

oyu know those reeds they use for clarinet playing (yes i play clarinet, 7th year already now) well, hey're made from dried bamboo, so maybe you could make a friction fire with using them as a mini firesaw or so ? anyhow, use the unused reeds, the other ones are pretty unusable, also (run out of chars)

  • @heyaanimerocksheya

When I saw "(ran out of chars)" I assumed you were talking about smould or charred material. It took me a while to realise you were talking about characters.

I like the idea of a woodwind reed. I'll think about it. Might be a bit small, perhaps one could mount it on something else. Hmmm.....

  • also, between the fibres of unused reeds, there is space, through wich air can flow. the used ones don't have this space, the fibres close because of the suliva that gets in it when playing clarinet

hope this helped or gave you an idea ;)

ps : maybe unused clarinet reeds are pretty expensive to just use to make fire ... but yeah xD

    greetings ~

  • @heyaanimerocksheya

If an object is transparent then light (and radiant heat) will pass through it unhindered.

Think of the windows of your house on a cold day.

If a lens can be fashioned into the right shape, it only takes a few seconds to get an ember.

  • i dont have anything to say ,i just didnt want to get blocked

  • @MasterofOrigami

Despite the evil French (or was that Belgian?) accent, the blocking thing was probably an idle threat, if only because of the practical difficulties involved in enforcing it.

Anyway, I think that one of the main freedoms protected within the concept of freedom of speech is the freedom to say nothing at all.

Thanks for commenting. The comments are what inspire me to make videos.

  • @MasterofOrigami

Actualy, that was sort of a joke, but I'm pleased it didn't stop you from commenting.

The comments help me realise that real people watch the videos. 10,000 views mean very little if one doesn't have any interaction with the viewers.

  • Please don`t block me, I want to make fire. See I even commented like you've asked.

  • @Yourveryking

Thanks. Comments are very welcome. It was a bit of a joke though.

  • looks like ull be doing the fire saw, fire piston, one handed firesteel trick, hmmmmm bowdrill device... i forget what its called where u press down on it and it does all the hard work for you.. hmmm, perhaps fire with a magnifying glass??? curious to see what ur gonna do with that ice though!

  • @KonstantinKuehn

The trick with the ice is in the shaping.

  • You remind me sooo much of my uncle. Keep 'em comin' ;)

  • @OmgOom

    My sympathies to your uncle....

    More coming soon.

  • I can't wait to see the one where you start a fire by getting Roberta's head struck by lightning... that's gonna be pretty sweet lol

  • @squalea

We might end up using a stunt double for that particular trick.

  • oh my english skill is sooooooo low xD

    but nice video ^^

  • @19AxxA93

I wanted to put subtitles up for this video but YouTube seems to have disabled that feature. I've subtitled all the others and I've noticed that I am getting many views from non English-speaking countries. I think fire is one of those things, like music, that people are drawn to irrespective of language, race, etc.

But mostly men, of course. Girls don't seem to be that interested, generally.

    Thanks for commenting.

  • Looking forward to seeing the videos. I dig your hat.

  • I am sooooooooo lost now. lol

  • @vtwinbreed

At the endof the passage, second door on the left...

  • @ROBwithaB Thank you, kind sir!

*tiptoes to the second door on the left*

    Creeeeeek, as the door opens.

As you step into the darkened room, you fail to notice the absence of a floor. The reaper catches you as you fall into his arms. It's a shame your journey has ended here. *Reaper theme begins to play*

  • Wow, 101 ways to make fire. Guess I hadn't thought to count all the various ways. I'm lookin' forward to this. I'll have to get my popcorn & soda ready. I have a pretty good guess of all 10 sneak peeks. In the meantime, I'll be wonderin' what the other 91+ ways could be.

I like your sense of humor, ROBwithaB. You're quite the entertainer. You'll make showing the various ways of fire making that much more interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing your new characters too.

  • @gundog5

Did you work out what the holes in the bamboo are for?

I see we are walking paraller paths in our quest for fire. Your videos display a very systematic approach to solving problems and understanding the processes involved.

They deserve more views. Feel free to post some as video responses as you see fit. And I'm pleased to see you're not afraid to show the occasional failure. People get the wrong idea about methods like the hand drill from only watching guys who've practiced. A lot!

  • @ROBwithaB The holes in the bamboo are to hold your spare matches in case the fire saw doesn't work out, ha ha. I don't know what the holes are for. Now I'm curious.

Yeah, my vids kinda get right to it. They're kinda boring to all but the few who genuinely wanna learn harder ways of making fire. I'ma have to work on adding some personality to my vids.

As far as negatively influencing kids on fire, I've seen far worse on YouTube. Rob's definitely one of the more responsible ones here.

  • how about making a fire with fish and chips like you said you would do 8 MONTHS AGO

  • @Yawb120

I was going to show the packs of smoked trout in this vid, in anticipation of this exact comment.

But the missus and the maid don't always understand that what looks like garbage to them is actually important fire-making material.

I should probably warn you that what I had in mind was not the type of fish n chips n mushy peas that you might buy on the high street of Muswell Hill.

(But thinking of it, that one's pretty easy. The biggest problem with chip fires is putting them OUT.)

  • Nice to have you back Rob! Those hands definitely look like they have been mauled by a hand drill. I'm thinking I saw a firesaw (the holes in the bamboo have got me stumped though). I'm excited to see what you have made a firepiston out of! Oh, and based on the pack of condoms, I'm guessing that you are going to light a fire off the heat from Roberta's loins!

  • @rico522

Pleased to report that the Callisters were merely an intermediate stage on the road towards elephant leather hands that feel no pain. It was a conscious decision to just keep at it until the hands hardened... made all the difference, being able to concentrate on technique instead of pain. And of course I was getting fitter in the meantime too.

And then eventually one can stop thinking and just concentrate on the rhythm. And then it almost happens by itself.

  • 16th

    XD!!!!!!!!!!

  • In no particular order...

    Looks like a bow?

    Condom full of water?

    Is earwax flammable ??

    Fire piston?

    Little lenses?

Not sure wut the 1 armed man was holding, or what was on the keychain,

That's all I can remember right now, and I await patiently for you up coming videos!!

    (I have a video you might like!! O.o. )

Check it out and leave comments. :)

  • @JayJhonson

You're on the right track with most of them.

The point about the two "lenses" is that they are not actually lenses. That's what I was trying to show with my silly mime; there was no magnification going on.

But in combination, with something ELSE acting as the actual lens.......

  • i am 15th

  • The block of ice must be to make a magnifying glass of ice

  • @Japsser

    Good guess.

Any thoughts on the other 9 methods?

  • i think there aren't 91 more ways to make fire, let's see XD

  • @DJeibon

I'm already planning to make more than 101, actually.
