  • This great classic song was written about the famous CoCo the clown who suffered terribly with hay fever.

The poor fellow was soaked in tears and snot everytime farmer Brown cut his meadows which were next door to where CoCo prepared his custard.

He actually got his famous name from his granny, when just before she went to bed, he brought her a mug of Coffee, and she told him thats not CoCo you clown.

Which made the poor fellow cry again so he whipped up some more custard.

  • @HarryUpson you are EASILY the best person alive:') i salute you<3

  • fucking awesome song..........................

  • Blinding mukka!

  • If this song were slower and just a little smoother, I would think it was by a certain solo artist from Liverpool from that era... can anyone guess who?

  • Great song!! :D

  • this song is literally the wackest song that has ever entered my ears !! eww, I feel like a clown just listening to it ):

  • Is this the song diddy was talking about in "in coming home"?

  • takes me back to my skinhead times, bopping away to this at the city centre night club, half and hour of two tone inbetween the normal chart music, good times!!

  • i have this theory..."the first version of a song you hear, that you like, will be your favorite version"...there are a few songs that break that rule..this is one of them!!

  • This is my favorite ska tune of all time! These guys are absolutely flawless!

  • @mjvaneck my fav thing is to see them live and see the generation that loved this music all grown up trying to dance to ska hilarious

  • time keeps on ticking by, I remember Dave Lee Travis introducing this, I was sixteen and full of piss and vinegar- happy days

  • I like Smokey's version better but this one's pretty good.

  • God I love this band. I grew up with it and it holds so many memories for me.

I feel kind of sad whenever I talk about them, though; no one my age even knows what "ska" is. This genre is truly under-appreciated.

  • @Cassounette1 .....WANKER

  • @OxBlood66 Nice one mate :) :)

  • @Cassounette1 You cheeky fucker! Fuck off back to your shite emo scene you waste of space. You've no concept of proper fuckin music.

  • This is a fantastic version of a very well known Northern Soul song, im assuming you dont understand music or the Anglo-Carribean blend of the late 70s.

  • @Cassounette1 because your a nob and your mum and dad shagged at the wrong time blame your mum and dad you tosser don't put everyone else's view's on a song down you sad boy

  • @Cassounette1 in this case do not waste your time commenting and go to listen to YOUR shit

    peace

  • @Cassounette1 cunt

  • @Cassounette1 cunt drown in a sea of dicks!

  • @theAceMod1979 Yes, there WAS an American band called The Beat active at the same time, so when the band from the U.K. toured N. American they were legally forced to call themselves The English Beat. Happy now?

  • this is my teacher's band (:

  • tears of a clown , tears of a clown , tears of a clown.

  • Bob M just played this on the CBC all Vinyl Friday, Flashbacks and I had to have it on my Playlist! Can't believe I'm 40.

  • the Jamaican voice killed it.

  • The Beat (not english beat!! - just the beat)

    Made Smokey blush

Don't let my show convince you......

But ain't too much sadder than.........

  • @Chaswhiskey

I think there was already a band in the US called THE BEAT, so they called themselves THE ENGLISH BEAT in the US.

  • @adeworks NO in the UK they was known as the BEAT.

    END OF

  • @smithdvr

    What are actually saying?

  • @smithdvr They were known as The Beat originally, but when they split there was much in fighting and acrimony. Hence now there are two bands The Beat and The English Beat. Dave fronts The English Beat and is now based in the States, although he comes back to England, notably Brighton regularly to see his daughter and grandchildren. Cor blimey though mate, does it matter?

  • @illhaveadouble agree lol

  • @illhaveadouble You're wrong. There were two bands originally named The Beat: one from the U.K, and one from the U.S. To avoid confusion (and copyright issues) the U.K. band was referred to as The English Beat when touring N. America. The English Beat DID split up, becoming General Public and the Fine Young Cannibals.

  • @two9ertango In which case, I stand corrected. Watch this space though, Ill ask Dave, if I can remember, next time he's in Blighty.

  • @illhaveadouble Please, keep in mind that I get all my information from that amazingly accurate resourse, Wikipedia :)

You know Dave? Lucky sod! Next time tell him I saw the Beat in concert in Toronto, summer of '85. Hands down, one of the top 5 shows I've EVER been to. Ever!

  • I love this Re- Vision of a classic song.

  • THIS is what a cover should be, a restoration AND a renovation.

    Just a great, fun song!

  • I love this version!

  • Ha ha John, nah you look nearer 50! :o) I remember (I think) the B-side of this single was 'Ranking Full Stop', another great song in which we were so proud if we could stop dancing when the music stopped!

  • I guess the English Beat was the most under rated act until Blur. But I will say this, Ranking Full Stop was the unadulterated hi note of the English Beat concert I saw in 82. (Bangles were 3rd warmup act)

  • what a song . this version means the most to me . can't believe i'm 42

  • @johnmoar1 yeah me to, 43 next month but listening to this takes me back to the age of 14-20, awesome years.

  • @johnmoar1

I can't believe I am already 45 ! .. it seems like yesterday my buddy and I were cruising around town listening to this song :)

  • @johnmoar1 - 46 here...LOL!

  • @johnmoar1 Those were the days eh? This one brings back lots of memories for me too. I'll be 44 soon.

    Peace.

  • @Geekman333

  • @Geekman333 THIS TWO TONE ERA OF PUNK W,AS THE BEST PART! SKA AND PUNK! • @Geekman333 I'm 53. From what I remember, those days were a total blast.

  • @TheFuzzieWuzzie They were for us. I suppose we're a few years behind the rest of the world in Australia. Back then we were still Anglophiles lol. Best wishes to you.

    Peace.

  • @johnmoar1 Yer lucky yer only 42

  • The best cover ever...way better than Smokey Robinsons original.

  • i love both versions of this by the beat and smokey robinsons.

    both versions amazing

  • @smithdvr You're absolutely right. This is one of the few instances in music where the cover is just as good as the original.

  • @smithdvr I love this version compaired to Smokey Robbinsons, i had a listen to them and its sooo diffrent :P

  • wow. Long as I've loved ska and this song never knew the beat covered it. Nice. superbly done.

  • Greatest Song Ever Written:

    Music by Stevie Wonder

    Lyrics by Smokey Robinson

Got a better candidate with a better pedigree?

    I don't think so!

  • dan - I see your bet, and raise you Twist and Shout. (You just can't record a bad version of it :)

That said, The Beat put on one of the best concerts I ever saw. Ever. 25 years later and it's still fresh in my mind.

  • Brilliant! Cheers, mate!

  • @dantean how about:

    Music by The Beatles

    Lyrics by Lennon/McCartney

    ...but I understand your point

  • I've "thumbs upped" your comment and can only counter by giving a very small nod to the single authorship of "Tears'" lyrics and the solo composorship of its music. Obviously, a great song is a great song and it wouldn't matter if it were written by one person, two people, or a committee of thousands. I'm making this absurdly small distinction nonetheless because I'm petty and proud of it!!!

  • i understand where you are coming from, yeah this excellent song has great pedigree in any event.

  • I forgot my hips can move like this!!!Its been so long

  • That takes me back to my teens in the eighties. Thank you.

  • Love it!!!!

  • best version of this tune.

  • SUPERB. Thanks for posting this. So many memories...
