it's is harder to use this one because ther is no guide for you where the camera is looking at.

Its simpler than this. Just put a ball and socket head on the top, preset the angle and then use the self timer to take the shot. I do this and it works well.

Tree trimmer pole and a mechanical shutter release are a great idea.

I like it. For video maybe a tree trimmer pole would work, too. It has a pully system already but isn't as tall as painter poles generally.
