  • I had the original Sugar Blues album but it got damaged in a basement flood about 15 years ago and had to be discarded. Bummer! :(

  • @tacoslammer Hi, thanks for your contact. If that ever happens again, sort out the extra special ones (or ones not available on CD) and...WASH them. It happened to me when a pipe in the apartment burst. The LP covers were pretty much totalled but I simply took dish soap and a tooth brush and cleaned the records under cool water in the bath tub. They sounded better than ever.

  • @u47tube P.S. Pat them dry on a flat towel.

  • Hi, Joni, thanks for your comments, and I'm happy the music brings back those beloved times.

  • When I was little my Dad played this record for me. I used to bounce up and down. and giggle - a lot! I think this is the real one. He saw I had rhythm, and liked music - so gave me piano lessons, thank GOD! ♪

Thank you for making me smile/giggle again!

  • @joni4749 Hi, Joni, thanks for your comments, and I'm happy the music brings back those beloved times.

  • I'll list all of the records/titles on eBay. I've always only been a buyer on eBay...I have to get the hang of this first.

  • @AndyKingTYG OK, thanks again.

  • I own the complete 6 - 78rpm collection of Records (Vogue, The Picture Records, A Tom Saffady Product, Sav-Way Industries, Detroit 13, Michigan, USA) one record is the original Clyde McCoy & His Orchestra A side: "Sugar Blues", written by: Clarence Williams & Lucy Fletcher, B side: Basin Street Blues. Record Registration R707 - All are in perfect condition. I will be advertising these for sale as a set on eBay.

  • @AndyKingTYG Thanks very much. I'm on eBay daily, so I'll see it soon.

  • I just discovered I have this 78 record. It's on the Decca lable, (C9763). Side B is the song "Tear It Down". Record is a bit beat up though. I'll upload it if anyone wants to hear it on my Victrola.

  • @RayPaganJr Hey, Ray, thanks, can't wait to hear this!

  • @RayPaganJr Hey again, Ray, have you uploaded this yet?

  • @u47tube Not yet. Got family members visiting. After they leave this weekend I'll get to it.

  • @u47tube I recorded it while everyone slept. Lazy relatives. It's up for your viewing.

  • Did anyone else know that Clyde McCoy is a direct descendant of the McCoy family from the now legendary Hatfield-McCoy feud?

  • @TheTallMan35 Hi, that's news to me--very interesting news at that! Thank you.

  • We just heard Lawerence Welk try to do this. I told my wife you need to hear the original thanks.

  • @kamakaze13 Yes, I've seen that--I think there's one show from the '50s and one from the '70s where they do "Sugar Blues.". They're fine musicians but neither trumpeter gets McCoy's effects. The main thing no one seems to be able to do is Clyde's hiccups and baby whimpering! Nice to hear from you, thanks.

  • I actually prefer the Vogue version - more of a brassy, big band sound. This one's a tad dry in comparison.

  • Thanks u47-funny thing,as soon as I started listening to that "other" version I thought the arrangement, apart from sounding corny, fit more into a 40's vibe.

    This is cool.

  • @bluesborn Hi and thanks for your input. Yeah, that "other" is what inspired me to -- no pun -- set the "record" straight! And it kinda started a thing with me where I've begun to post rare and unusual jazz trumpet recorded moments that aren't heard anywhere on YouTube. Just my duty to the legacy of the greats.

  • @u47tube You're a man on a mission that I can definitely get next to. Nice that you're giving these old gems the respect they deserve and "setting the record straight" I'm a subscriber now so I'll check in from time to time.

  • @bluesborn Well, someone's got to do it! Again, thank you and thank you for subscribing. I'll do my best to post as time and energy and inspiration permits. And I definately am inspired now, thanks to you. Let's see...I've been meaning to do Raymond Scott's "The Toy Trumpet." Hmmmmmmm...

  • They just don't make music like they usta. Love it!!! Thanks for sharing.

I sing and we're doing songs from the 20's-the 50's in Februrary. I'm running this by the instrumentalists. We have a really gr8 trumpet player that may know this one.

  • @cathyulrichify Thank you, Cathy, good luck with February and I enjoyed your lovely New Year singing.

  • THIS IS the 1931 Columbia recording!

  • @JCJasion Yep, sure is and thanks for your enthusiasm. Happily Merries!

  • This is the very first jazz I ever loved. I was about five years old when I heard it, and I've been hooked ever since. BTW, I'm 60 YOA now.

  • @markbilldebkevin Hello there, I share your love for this stuff. You can image how thrilled I was as a nine-year-old student trumpeter to hear "Sugar Blues" for the very first time!

  • Interesting...I never knew that. Thanks for that info. I wasn't a listener of Dr. Demento till around 1976, and then for just a couple years off and on. So, I missed his Sugar Blues closing.

  • in the early 1970s dr.demento used "sugar blues" for his closing theme (before he found "cheerio cherry lips"),so i recognize this as the REAL McCOY.

  • @u47tube you're welcome. if you're interested in dr. d's history he's just posted a 2 1/2 hr. 40th anniversary show on his site. clips from the early days all the way up to today. since he's not on "regular" radio or satellite anymore this is the only way to hear new shows. it's $2 to stream in low quality, and $4 for high quality. hard to believe it's been 40 years since he started. he was inducted into the radio hall of fame a year or two ago. i have him to thank for my varied tastes in music.

  • Hi, thank you so much. Really glad you like it and that you've rediscovered it in your collection!

  • Boy does this bring back memories.

My dad bought the Capitol LP which is shown @ 3:10. I was going through a box of old vinyl yesterday and discovered it is still in my possesion! My siblings and I got a great deal of enjoyment out of listening to that record forty+ years ago.

IIRC, the version of Sugar Blues on that record is a slow tempo like the 1st one on this upload. Thanks for putting this up.

  • @tommylord Hi, thank you so much. Really glad you like it and that you've rediscovered it in your collection!

  • Hi, x, did you know, Clyde got his sound using a doorknob (pixie) mute in the bell, then using an ice cream dish for the wah wah?

  • Yup!! This is the real recording. I remember it. As a matter of fact I was fooling around last night doing the first couple of measures on my trumpet.

  • @u47tube .WOW U47 tube!! You must be older than dirt!! rofl But then I'm in that category too. Seriously now. Where did you get that piece of information. Also in passing I play trumpet professionally. Was also in the AF Band plus singing with the Met in NYC.

  • Oh, and I think I forgot to thank...let's see...katzin...thank you!

  • Thank you, JC, for the interesting discographical details and for your interest in good music!

  • This is the real deal. This IS McCoy's 1931 recording of the tune, the original issue being Columbia 2389-D, and recorded on January 22, 1931, according to the online discographical project website.

  • @JCJasion Thank you, JC, for the interesting discographical details and for your interest in good music!

  • I loved the Vogue Picture Record version - really cooks, especially the brass at the end!

  • Vogue? You mean the lable from France? Whew, I'll have to look for that one. Thanks!

  • Actually, they were made in Detroit in the 40s. There is a vid of it on Youtube.

  • I see, thanks. I had known about the Vogue label from France who recorded Chet and Clifford and Lucky Thompson, etc, in the '50s. I'll check out the YouTube on this. Thanks again.

  • Hey, great tip about Vogue. Thanks again. Everyone should check these out on YouTube. These were actually "picture records"--yes, artwork right in the grooves of the vinyl.

  • @H1r3m2plz Vogue? You mean the lable from France? Whew, I'll have to look for that one. Thanks!

  • My dad played with Clyde in the early 40's, he was the lead alto sax. I just love the big band sound.

  • Hi, Susie, well, once again I say, we were born to the wrong times, sigh.

  • I totally agree, I have been told that by many folks. I can talk all day about big bands and such, but bring up new music and I know nothing about it.

  • Oh, I KNOW about new pop music these days. It's crap. Boring, formulative, phony--made for one purpose: to sell "units" ahhh, ahahahahahaha!

  • This just happened to be one of my favorite songs when I was young. At the age of 16 I was at a DAVA convention with my parents in Sacramento, CA--we lived in Riverside, CA at the time. I was honored to be staying at a big hotel where Clyde McCoy was playing and My daddy had Mr. McCoy play the Sugar Blues for me. Mr. McCoy dedicated the song to me and boy did I turn red. It is funny now for sure.

  • Mr. McCoy also gave me his autograph which I still feel so honored to have. I was raised with big band music and still love it at the age of 60 years--an age is just a number, it is the memories that make it all worth it. Thank you for reading this if ya do. MGB

  • I sure did read it and I loved hearing about that special experience. Priceless! Thank you for that. Have a wonderful 2010.

  • The Capital album cover with the pen, ink and watercolor artwork with the trumpet tucked under his arm is the version I listened to with my dad. It kind of rocked a bit. The big band kicked it out on that one.

This second one is kind of boogey woogy. What's the story that goes with the autograph?

  • Hi, thanks! Well, Clyde autographed that promo photo for me--NOT!!! Ha ha, no, I found and borrowed that photo at one of the trumpet forums. Not sure if they found/borrowed it too. Yes, I too'd like to know the origin and history of the John Hancock. I'm thinking of posting more trumpet stuff deserving of more recognition.

  • Thanks! My band is adding this song to our play list.

  • My pleasure, would love to hear your band playing this!

  • @kcmt01 My pleasure, would love to hear your band playing this!

  • I'm so glad you enjoy it. I just wish I could add some more elaborate video effects. but then, music this engaging...doesn't need it, huh? Thank you.

  • Thanks you so much for posting this ... I can remember my mom and dad dancing to this in our living room in the late fifties, early sixties ... brings back wonderful memories!!
